Trevor Lawrence

Question.... Can a player choose to not enter the draft and just sign as a UFA? I never liked the Eli/Rivers swap when Eli basically said no way I play with the Chargers, I only want the giants and had to work out a trade. My opinion was if you enter into the draft and want that guaranteed money the CBA offers, then you go to whatever team picks you, none of this pouting ish.

But what is stopping lawerence from not going into the draft, signing as a UFA to whatever team he wants, who will likely open their pocketbooks for him as if he were some dude off the street? I get there is value in being the number 1 overall pick, but cant tell me there wouldnt be a bidding war for the kid if he were to forego the draft.

It would be POSSIBLE to go in the supplemental draft, but I think it would cost him a bunch of money. Also, I think the order of the 2021 draft would be the same for the supplemental draft.

Anything could happen but you don’t pass up being the #1 pick. I’d hesitate to be a Jet as well - talk about a dumpster fire - but it might not be the Jets. Remember what happened with Eli
It's happened before. The Jets had the overall #1 pick during Peyton Manning's junior year. They were all hyped thinking they would get him. Then he decided to stay for his senior year and they got stuck picking Keyshawn Johnson the WR from USC.

John Elway also forced a trade from the Colts to the Broncos, said he won't report to the Colts.

Thanks, Got it. so the players union is a mandatory union? i.e. you want to play the NFL you are required to join? I guess I still have difficulty seeing how the players union, if it were a choice, can control a college kid who is not technically in said union but the NFL is a private entity so they can essentially put in a lot of requirements/rules. Also reminded me of the Malcolm Butler story where I believe he was from west alabama and working at some restaurant when the Pats called him up and invited him to a workout but I guess he could have technically "entered" the draft with little fanfare.
The issue here is if you make yourself eligible for the draft you have to either go to the team that drafts you or not play.

If you opt to return to college, you are not eligible to be drafted so you can't back door in by somehow becoming a free agent.

John Elway was the 1st one to say he wasnt gonna play for the team that drafted him when the Baltimore Colts drafted him.

Then Eli did it in 04

As a Phins fan, we just got rid of Brady. I'm not sold on Lawrence being the next all-time great, but I'd be fine if he went to the NFC, or at least a different division in the AFC.
The Bears would welcome him with open arms and turn him into a below average QB in less than two years. It’s what we do.

If everything breaks his way, he's got about 15 years of NFL Top 10 QB money coming his way. If you're going to sacrifice 1/15 of those precious years, there needs to be a legitimate reason for it.

But what happens when the Jets suck next year and still end up with the first pick in 2022?
I mean, technically he could come back again as this year doesn't count so he could be a Junior again next season.

I really wonder how much sucess Lawrence will have in the NFL. I know he'll be successful and make a ton of money, but I wonder how much given the talent level is even among most of the NFL. Most of the spread QBs are good, but not great at the NFL level with the exception of Kansas City's Mahomes. Look at the sucess and failure of Heisman QBs. Joe Burrows looks like an NFL stud, but there's plenty that have had and are having mediocre careers. Will Lawrence be that dude or just another guy?

I hope he does stay. I didn't like his antics in this year's game. I want to see UM beat Dabo and this dude at the same **** time.

Need someone in the nfl to take one for the team and let the jets squeak out 2 wins. I need Minnesota tanking to ******* mean something lol
