Transfer Portal Feelings...

What grade would you give the staff if you take into account who we have coming in from high school as well as who we are bringing in from the portal?
A- . Best class ( if portal is taken into account in 15 years ) Without portal taken into account it is the worst class in 5 years BUT Diaz came in after most of the players had signed in DEC so that ain't his fault at all.

It’s funny how some of these teams’ fans are trying to cut us down with sayings like “Portal Potty Champs”. Meanwhile, they have taken transfer kids themselves. They can’t say Manny and company did a good job with the limited time he had.

I may be alone on this but...
Every time we land a transfer portal kid (Martell, Bolden, Hill, etc), I feel pretty much just as happy as when we land a highly rated high school kid. Am I alone on this? I know that a team can’t rely completely on it but it does seem like a great supplemental opportunity.

I dont expect this too continue. Diaz realized he wasnt going to get kids to flip this late....so he had to find kids that would help. If this continues it just means we are still missing out on top tier talent

You're not alone at all. I'm tired of seeing 4 star HS kids end up playing like 2 stars here at UM. I'll take a player with a track record in college ball any day.

Adding these quality ‘free agents’ to the team is good. The ‘20 class will be important, sure. But these portal adds are essentially free agents. They will improve this team. We had the scholly’s to offer ...I’m glad we’re nearing the 85 limit with (seemingly) Um caliber players.

Unfortunately, we still won’t be anywhere near 85. That’s next year since there’s so few seniors. I believe at best we’re at 80-81 depending on if we get a couple more portal guys

Ah, got it. I thought we might be closer to the 85 but admit I don’t really know.

That’s back up the point that upon staff evals, if these transfers can help win, take em. The ‘20 class should be great and is not hurt 1 bit by taking these transfers (& more next year too).

With the additions today I counted roster at 81, and if Phillips comes would make 82. Seems to be right where we should be because of the quality of next year’s class. Certainly do not want to have a space problem for that class.

Think the portal was a big plus this year for fill ins, but do not see how it would ever replace signing 20-25 quality players for 4 years vs a rental for 1-2 years. Would be like Miss State and other schools loading up on Juco’s Every year.

Muschamp at South Carolina hates it. He wants the NCAA to allow teams to sign up to 30 players to make up for players leaving. He cited also the loss of 5th year seniors transferring is stopping them of reaching the 85 scholarship.

Agree 100%

At the end of the day, all that matters is what your roster looks like. It doesn't make any difference how you built it.

I can't agree with that. Gimmicks and unusual situations don't last long. There is no reason to believe the Canes will continue to benefit from this type of thing, at least not close to this extent. We had a rare situation of a class that collapsed in the late going, leaving many openings, followed almost immediately by an uptick in outlook and coaching staff. That type of scenario will be repeated...never.

I am not going to ignore situational influence in comparison to the big picture. The key in the NFL is to win the draft and the key in college football is to win the traditional recruiting process.

Happy Adjusters lose

As long as they have been properly vetted, adding studs that have produced in CFB against quality competition is a lot lower risk than recruiting high school kids that may not:

  • Sign
  • Show up to school
  • Stay for more than 1-2 years
  • Pan out at the college level
  • Be more than a JAG

Plus, the bag game is less of a factor.

When you have a chance to add players like Trevon Hill that have been an absolute terror on the DL at the college level, it is so much less risky than recruiting out of high school.

Manny Diaz = El Rey Del Portal! Go Canes!

Threads just not right without a little booty gif

That's some fine booty...more my style...not some mountainous expanse of blubbery fatty tissue bouncing around while you try to get a fix on the prime target...or sometimes it's not blubbery but overly thick and hard, which would've served the French well in WWI if they could have used several thousand instead of the Maginot Line.

The emergence of the portal came about at exactly the right time for us. I'm perfectly okay with this being a one-off event. Our recruiting was no bueno this year, and we needed help. We got it and I'm thankful for it. A new HC and new offensive staff hopefully will improve recruitment so that the portal doesn't have to be our savior in the future. I believe Manny will be much more aggressive in recruiting because he can set the tone, not reflect Richt's preferences.

In any case, I don't see the portal ever being nearly as important to us as it was this year.
