This is what I keep saying. Hitting improved when Dominguez was hired. Catching improved with Salty coming on staff. Where’s the change needed in the pitching staff?? Fielding is what it is and it mostly came from players probably playing out of position but pitching on the other is having a development problem and a recruiting problem.

Smh - with a parting shot at the U through his quote, but mostly directed at JD it seems.

Anybody behind the scenes have any more insight on this? He was sitting an easy 95-96 his last couple of appearances with a nasty slider to boot - sure could have helped our 2027 staff.
 
I'm a fan of taking guys with stuff and letting them develop. Lopez is an elite arm.

Daniel Lopez was drafted by the Orioles in the 12th round last summer out of Odessa College thanks to a mid-90s fastball that touched 97 this fall, a big curveball and a good changeup. He’s still trying to figure out who he is, but the stuff is electric.

81 K's in 48 IP as a freshman at Odessa.

If you want him as a reliever I'd make him more of a two-pitch guy who throws gas up and curveball out of same tunnel.

He's a guy who started some in Juco and has the pitches and frame to develop.

The upside here is massive as a heavy Groundball guy who also misses bats and has major velo. I would've thought this is one we'd all be excited about.

Letting them develop is the key phrase.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sully only fired the pitching coach. All the other assistants who have left the last couple of years, left on their own.

Brought in pitching coach from Oregon State and Recruiting Coordinator from Oklahoma. But yes, he lost one or 2 guys to Tennessee last year.
 
Refresh my memory, is portal activity still going on past the mlb draft? For those in the know, are we still shopping or are we done and just praying we dnt lose a couple unexpected to the draft?

Draft will impact spots we have available and will cause the staff to assess afterwards, yes. Teams can and do lose guys as UDFA as well.

Short answer is they aren't finished shopping and talking to prospects and there is still a chance someone gets added. A few major arms still out there using the portal as leverage. Expect most all to sign, but any who don't will seek big deals in portal.

Hitters mostly are committed, but several who are eligible will sign and cause a bit of stacking the board again.

Freshmen will decommit and go Juco, while several Juco's are waiting for P4's to fill their rosters to decide if they are signing D1, going D2, or going back to Juco for second year (if eligible).

It'll be August before I'm confident that things are settled with the roster, but I don't expect anything material to happen to the roster between now and then (like signing a Micah Worley etc.).
 
1B Donavan Jeffrey, who entered the portal on June 3, still hasn't committed to another team. D1 baseball, in its Northwoods League update this week, wrote: "Outfielder Donovan Jeffrey is another Woodchuck who played a big role in Wausau’s big first half surge offensively, and also had the biggest hit in my viewing. With the bases loaded Jeffrey blasted a grand slam, his only home run of the summer, to the opposite field that at the time gave his team a 4-1 lead. There’s obvious strength in his 6-foot-1, 220-pound frame, although he logged just 12 at-bats in 12 games as a freshman at Miami. He returns to the Hurricanes for his sophomore year intent on earning more regular playing time."
