ESPN just had a debate on this. I didn't agree with all on there but this is mine:

1. Saban
2. Meyer
3. Sweeney
4. Herman
5. Stoops/Fisher/Dantonio

Herman I put 4 even though he is in his second year. 3 way tie at 5 couldn't choose all have pluses and minuses What Herman has done is quite remarkable. Also as OC at Ohio State he put 500+ on Bama in The Sugar Bowl. I believe he is that good. Briles may have made the list but we know! The 1st 2 hard to admit it but had to!

Next 5 Richt, Harbaugh, Petrino, Patterson, Peterson in any order. All time list would be a good one as well.

So why Stoops?

A lot of coaches would be successful at Clemson with the budget Dabo's given for assistants. He's had 2 million-dollar coordinators simultaneously there.

Saban
Meyers
Harbaugh
Patterson (Never mind this season, guy took a small conference school into a perennial ranked team, innovating on both sides of the ball)
Herman (Needs to prove himself, but I think he's the goods)

Briles Would probably make my list if he were active.

Herman should not be up there yet. If you want to go with this ranking, in 2003 Larry Coker was the best coach in the NCAA.

Wait until the program is fully his, and then we'll see.

Dude...Herman beat OU game one this year.

Went 13-1 last year and beat FSU.

Are you kidding?

IMO the job of a CFB coach boils down to two different aspects: recruiting and coaching. We could break these down further into more subsections, but the basic idea is that a CFB has to both recruit quality player and coach them up so they can WIN (the ultimate aspect/goal). The problem with these types of rankings is that certain coaches have an inherent advantage in recruiting based on the program they coach, which makes it harder to evaluate the "best" coaches.

Also, these lists come out and no one has any idea what aspects the creators weighed heavily in formulating the rankings.

Having said that, the top two coaches are undisputed: Saban and Meyer.

No reason Stoops should be in top 5. Herman has done a tremendous job recruiting and coaching, but he didnt' recruit 75% of players on Houston - he inherited them. I think Swinney is up there, but not sure if top 5.

After Saban and Meyer, i think there is a great argument that the next 10 or so coaches are all pretty interchangeable. Mark Richt is among those next 10 coaches. Just an aside, but Al Golden, by 2015 based off his track record, would literally rank in the bottom 5-10 of CFB coaches.

I am with you on Briles I said.it I put Herman because the question asked "The best coach today". Yeah needs to prove more but Herman as in his second year trashed Fisher and Stoops back to back games and lost a total of 1 game! At Houston! I like Shaw also Brian Kelly but lost a few close games that could have put him up higher!

I know he was not a HC at the Time but 550 years on a Saban Dfense? OSU offense hasn't been the same since he left.

Has a national title and in the playoff last year! Yeah got his *** kicked but got there! 10 win seasons beat some good competition would you take Stoops over Richt?

He just got there. Yes great coach but has to win something how many quality wins lost to OSU and MSU(on the freak punt). He will be top 5 by end of year.
