Toney Punt Return From the Five was a trick play that would have been an easy TD

I'll go on record as saying this. It was a HORRIBLE play call and a HORRIBLE decision to even CALL that potential trick play.

At what point is Danny Kitler going to get criticized on these boards? Nobody? Well...I'll do it.

This was absolute stupidity wrapped in nativity. You don't call a play that involves a throw back on a punt return when you're returning said punt from your own goal line. In other words, you don't call this play when the other team is punting from anywhere near mid-field.

Why? Cause it's easier for the punter to put more hang time on the punt which not only kills the trick play aspect of the play, but puts Toney in an impossible situation. He has to square his body early and get underneath the punt to even give the trick play a chance, then when the hang time does in fact happen and he doesn't have enough time to look across the filed to attemp the lateral, he's in a position where he doesn't want to risk getting out of the way of the punt last minute for fear it could ricochet off any part of his leg/body.

It was 6 levels beyond stupid. I also want to know what Kitler could possibly be teaching on his punt safe technique where Bauman thought he should have inside responsibility despite the fact he's the outside up-back.

Kitler deserves to be called into question on both of these sequence of events.

I know I know....let it go....but this sequence easily can be argued to be the sequence that doomed us.

I was ****ed when they hired Kalter to run specials. Dude was here for all the horse****. Started as a GA and was here 10 yrs. Literally one of the only holdovers from our most pathetic undisciplined teams. It was a lazy and uninspired hire and it probably cost us the Louisville game and the national championship. I will say that somehow Bryce prevented a fake punt against A&M so he wasn't all bad but for the most part our special teams were not a plus phase for us it was either a push or less in most games.

It’s not his call to make.the decision to run it is on Mario. If the special teams coach made that without Mario knowing he’d already be fired.

He should be fired for Bauman not being 100% sure on what to do on the blocked punt.

SIAP but has there been any talk about a shakeup with special teams coaches?
We can only hope. It’s amazing to me that there’s still so many coaches that neglect special teams. If I had a dollar for every time they’ve cost a team a win I’d be a rich man. Beamer practically made a living placing an emphasis on winning the special teams battle. Running an “elite” program means looking after ever aspect of it, and hopefully we get this fixed sooner rather than later.

At least slide step and engage with the rusher. Just get in front of him to slow him down.

Summary: The play failed; some think the play should have never been called; our special teams cost us the game

I'll bottom line this: We should Fire Dan and hire a real ST coach...

Mario has guts to call this play.
Yup, and it didn't workout but I think it was 100% the right call.
Our punt was getting blocked regardless with Bauman's horse**** effort. If not in the endzone, they scoop and score. It didn't workout but it was a great call.

Look at the top of the screen. Toney was going to throw across the field. No one was within 50 yards of us.

Unbelievable that the ONE PUNT Indiana executed well was the one time we called that. I was wondering why Toney fielded that punt. Well… now we know

I missed that myself. I don't mind the result now that I know the intention.

Eh...
Their punter wasn't very good. Indiana fans were talking like that was his best punt of the season.

They punted from their own 41. It was a 55 yard punt to the 4. ..

His other punts that game were
- 50 yards from their own 18. Fielded at the 32.
- 46 yards at their own 26. Fielded at the 28.
- 49 yards from their own 31. Fielded at the 20.
- 41 yards at their own 47. Fielded at the 12.

That's averaging 46 yards. Which if punting from the 41 would put them about the 13. If it was his longest of the game you'd think field around the 8. If shortest you field around 18...
