I gave you the link. Briles was never offered. And I heard him on a radio show talk about the gig was never offered, but that he would have considered it. the host gave him credit for being honest.
Follow your own logic ... UNC paid more than Arkansas State, but Malzahn turned UNC down and took Arkansas State. Why would he do that? He turned down a Power 5 job AND more money. You're arguing nobody does that ... I'm telling you, he did it. It happened. Move on. LOL
Sumlin and Briles jumped to increase their check, and stayed in the same state! This isn't as complicated as you're trying to make it seem. Same deal as James Coley not going with Mark Stoops to UK. Coley could have been a play-caller at UK, but he didn't want to go to Lexington, so he stayed put ... Until Al called, and Coley could move to his hometown to be a play-caller. That stuff matters.
UM offers, Herman may accept. But it's not automatic.
Chris Petersen turned down a lot of jobs when he was at Boise. Gary Patterson has turned down some jobs to stay at TCU while they were in the Mountain West.
You love Miami, think it's great, think it's the easiest play to recruit and win a title.
Meanwhile, 10 other programs have won titles since 1998. And 14 other programs have played for titles. So, clearly ... People can live in the region they want, poach south Florida high school talent, and win titles.
I'll repeat ... Living in South Florida is NOT for everybody.
Miami has to identify the right coach, who wants to live in South Florida.
If this guy wins his conference in year 1 and hits 10 wins (pre-bowl), his buyout will be irrelevant as many teams will gladly pay it to have him coach. In fact, he will probably have an offer 2-3 times his current yearly base salary, even if he had to pay it. Since this guy is from Ohio and went to Cal Lutheran, I wouldn't believe it would be difficult to pry him from the state of Texas.
It's funny how this dude has generated this crazy narrative that Herman is suddenly Mr. Texas.

I don't know if Briles was offered the job or not (rumor was he got an offer), but I find it hard to believe he wasn't on the short list. Charlie Strong was NOT Texas's first choice.
Malzahn took the Arkansas State job because he waited too long for the right job to open up; he didn't interview for UNC and Arkansas State in the same cycle. I don't even remember him being offered the UNC job. He'd been offered Vanderbilt but turned it down.
Sumlin didn't have major ties to Texas. Why would it be so important for him to stay in state? He moved from Houston to Texas A&M. That's a no-brainer.
Chris Petersen wanted to stay in the pacific northwest because of his son's illness. He has some specialist doctor up there from what I understand.
Gary Patterson turned down **** jobs, but guess which job he was set to interview for back in the day? Miami.
As for James Coley, I don't remember his being offered the UK job before he took the Miami job. There were rumors last year Stoops was after him. Before that, I don't know.
Bottom line is there is no way Tom Herman would turn down the Miami job if offered. Houston is not a premiere job, and there's no guarantee they'll be able to get into a Power 5 conference.

Truth. Alien space craft once intentionally crashed in New Mexico rather than land in Lubbock. If this guy wins his conference in year 1 and hits 10 wins (pre-bowl), his buyout will be irrelevant as many teams will gladly pay it to have him coach. According to that dude, everyone is obsessed with Texas. He's even reached the ridiculous level of claiming that Texas Tech is a better job than Miami. People go to Lubbock, TX to die. Almost no one voluntarily goes there.
Herman could potentially be a God send, but I want to see how his season plays out first. If he's able to win his conference and crush an opponent in a bowl game...he would resurrect miami instantly.
On the Malzahn topic. He didn't wait to long and get stuck with Arkansas State. He passed on the UNC job in November of 2011, and accepted Arkansas State in November. He passed on Vanderbilt when they hired Franklin.

SMU was awful last year, a lot to expect him to win the conference.
I"m not concerned with record as much as style of play and other things when finding the next coach.
