Herman, who has No. 18 Houston off to a 7-0 start in his first year as head coach at the school, is also being vetted by Southern California as they search for a head coach.
Miami has began the process of reaching out to Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer to learn more about Herman, who was an offensive coordinator with the Buckeyes from 2012-14.
Herman has Houston off to a fast start on offense with the Cougars averaging 554 yards per game and 45 points per game in what is a balanced attack. Houston’s biggest win of the season has been a 34-31 victory at Louisville in the second week of the season.
Herman won the Broyles Award last season, which given to the top assistant coach in college football, after leading an Ohio State offense that won a National Championship with a third string quarterback.
Herman's 2014 Ohio State offense finished the season ranked fifth in scoring offense at 44.8 points per game and ninth in total offense at 511.6 yards per game despite losing their top two quarterbacks Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett. Herman's quarterbacks in 2014 ranked second nationally with a team passing efficiency rating of 167.72.
Herman, 40, is considered one of the top recruiters in the country. Most of Herman’s recruiting ties are to California, where he was born and raised, and Texas, where he cut his teeth as a young coach after stops at Sam Houston State, Texas State, and Rice.
Herman has already made a quick impact on the recruiting trail for Houston with the Cougars ranked 40th nationally by 247Sports.com. The gem of Herman’s 2016 recruiting class is five-star defensive tackle prospect Ed Oliver, who hails from Houston. Oliver committed to Houston over schools like LSU and Texas.
