Davis, 63, was the head coach at Miami from 1995-2000 and helped build the 2001 national championship team, which is arguably the most talented team in college football history.
His controversial departure following the 2000 season to take the head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns bothered a number of people at UM, which is one reason why many do not expect UM to consider bringing him back although he is the most popular choice amongst the fans. Davis has since said that he regretted ever leaving Miami.
Davis is currently a college football analyst for ESPN following four seasons at North Carolina, which ended when 13 players were suspended for the team’s opener in 2010 for NCAA violations. Davis was fired the following summer although he was never mentioned in the NCAA notice of allegations and he has no involvement in the investigation.
Cristobal, 45, is a Miami native and former Hurricane player who was on the 1991 national championship team. He has had two different coaching stints at UM after he was a graduate assistant there under Davis. Cristobal was the tight ends coach at UM in 2004-05 and the offensive line coach the following season before accepting the head coaching position at FIU in 2007.
After taking FIU to two bowl games and winning 24 games in the first five seasons, Cristobal was let go in 2012 after a 3-9 campaign.
Cristobal joined the Al Golden’s staff at Miami on Jan. 10, 2013, but his second coaching stint at his alma mater was short-lived lasting just 41 days as he accepted the offensive line position at Alabama on Feb. 20. His brief return to UM didn’t sit well with some members within the UM administration and the fans, which would have to be rectified for him to be named the head coach.
When Cristobal was at FIU and even while he has been at Alabama, he has always paid close attention to the UM program and has been very passionate about the Hurricanes. In recent years Cristobal has reached out to other coaches around the country to gauge interest in joining him at Miami if he were to get the head coaching job.
Schiano, 49, has been out of coaching since 2013 after being fired from the Buccaneers after an 11-21 record in two seasons. Schiano is best known for being the head coach at Rutgers from 2001-11 amassing a 68-67 record with a number of upset wins and winning his final five bowl games.
This is the third time that Schiano’s name has come up as a potential coach at Miami, where he was the defensive coordinator under Davis in 1999-2000. He turned down Miami in 2006 as he decided to stay at Rutgers after a 10-2 regular season and UM hired Randy Shannon.
Schiano’s name popped up again in 2010 after Shannon was fired, but he was not a finalist when UM selected Golden.
With UM’s decision to fire Golden on Sunday, Schiano is interested and has been planning return to coaching in the near future as he has taken the past two years to re-evaluate his coaching style.
Miami director of athletics Blake James gave no indications of how the coaching search will go during his teleconference on Sunday night, but did say some things about what they will be looking for.
“In any great coach you want someone who is going to recognize the important role they play in the young men’s lives who come here to this university,” James said. “You want someone who is going to recruit to all of the great things about our university, and someone who recognizes where our program’s expectations are, where we’ve been in the past and where we want to be in the future. I’m confident that we’ll find the best person for the job to be able to meet those expectations.”
