Todays scrimmage

This offense is gonna get a lot of chunk plays against teams this year, practicing against that all year with a young team will only help the defense, long term, for the young guys especially......

Honestly it's better than 15 play drives. They are also getting sacks and making 3rd down stops.
That's what we need.

It's not better if it's happening frequently. I'm seeing too many 20+ yard plays in this thread.

The d-line has really been making a lot of plays and playing hard on the LOS.

The secondary is the weakest link b/c 1.) they are the youngest unit on the team and 2.) the safety position is terrible....

So when you have the weapons at receiver on offense i expect big plays against our secondary b/c of those 2 factors but if you look at the final score (31-19) its obvious to me that the defense didnt just bend over and take an *** whooping and really made it a competitive scrimmage.

If we didn't see any big plays we'd be screaming, "what's wrong with the offense!?"

I don't expect the defense to hold teams to 99 yards and 0 points.
In my book if We win every game 50-49 and our defense is the worst in football we still have trophy #6.
Obviously that is an exaggerated example, but our defense doesn't need to be top 20 great to compensate for a shiitty offense ala UF.
We just need to be better than last year. Top 50 in scoring and we win every game.

Here are my highlights:

Herb Waters 45 yd completion from Morris

Herb Waters 60 yd completion for TD on 3rd down from Morris

80 yd Morris TD to Dorsett

Defense with a 3 and out. Morris pass to Malcolm Lewis short of 1st

Artie Burns jumps on pass intended for herb waters in end zone. Bats down. Impressive.

Duke Johnson tasty 20 yd run

30 yd pass from Morris's to Mo hagens

20 yd pass from Morris to Duke who makes a bunch of people miss.

Defense has been hit and miss. Have gotten a couple of 3 and outs and defending the running game fairly well. Gilbert (11) has played quite a few snaps and has gotten pressure on Morris once contributing to incompletion.

In terms of injuries: In addition to Chickillo not playing, Mo hagens took a hard hit and had to be helped off field.Ladarius Gunter also took a shot to groin but seemed ok.

After one possession that ends in defensive stop 1st team offense and part of 1st team defense comes off the field. Williams comes on for Morris. Crawford for Duke. Perryman stays on.

Nifty 10 yd run by Crawford.

Williams pressured by Gilbert and Muhammad on consecutive plays. Throws incomplete.

Williams sacked by what looked like Kamalu. Not sure though.

Williams misfiring. Hold that. Williams hits Coley for a 30 yd td. (Someone said it was Lewis but pretty sure Coley was receiver.) Otherwise Williams still misfiring!

final possession:

DNofrio yelling for Kamalu. Big boy. Lines up at DT next to Renfrow.

20 yd completion Williams to Coley. Tackled by Jamal Carter.

Tyriq McCord bats pass down at line.

25 yd screen pass to OT. Nice to see.

Tyriq McCord touch sack on Williams erases a nice td pass to Sandland in end zone.

12 yd 1st down to Garret Kidd. Ball at 9yd line with 48 seconds to go.

1st down incomplete. Kelvin Cain bats down pass on 2nd. Incompletion intended for Dmauri Jones on 3rd down. Defense wins possession.

Wait...offense goes for it on 4th down. Williams hits Stacey Coley for 9 yd touchdown on 4th down. Scrimmage over.

For what it's worth. Offense 31 - Defense 19. More importantly no injuries in 2nd half.

I was thinking the same thing. Not a good sign.

People need to quit jumping to conclusions about our Defense. We have 2 of the top 10 offensive players in the country and everyone but Mike James returning on offense. Our offense is suppose to beat out defense with all of the talent we have. I would be worried if our offense wasn't doing so good.

I was thinking the same thing. Not a good sign.

People need to quit jumping to conclusions about our Defense. We have 2 of the top 10 offensive players in the country and everyone but Mike James returning on offense. Our offense is suppose to beat out defense with all of the talent we have. I would be worried if our offense wasn't doing so good.

Wouldn't it be interesting if, when its all said and done, our defense in this scrimmage held our offense to their lowest point total of the year?

And Tracy Howard, Gunter, Crawford, Jenkins, Perryman and Kirby are scrubs?

I don't think the difference in talent is THAT different between our DB's/LB's and WR's.

There's only two reasons a defense should be giving up that many big plays.
1. The difference in talent is light years
2. Guys on defense are in the wrong spots

Good offenses don't do it that frequently to good defenses. I was hoping our defense had reached "good" level. Who the **** was I kidding?

The offense is at a distinct advantage because you can't hit the QB. I just remember the spring game where hits/sacks were counted as completions because they couldn't touch him. Would like to see how those plays developed before making judgements.

No they are not scrubs either but you are comparing an offense that has a LOT of elite veteran talent, along the O-line, at receiver, at running back, and at QB.... to a defensive secondary that still has to rely on underclassmen to not make mental errors and make all the plays back there.

Also Deon Bush not playing didnt help and he is only a sophomore... Jamal Carter is just a freshman and he may end up being our second best safety on the team. Rayshawn Jenkins hasnt made a play all Camp i dont know whats going on with him but he is still just a sophomore.

Tracy Howard and Antonio Crawford are just true sophomores but Miami has to depend on them as 2 of our 3 best corners. Ladarius Gunter is a solid junior but he is still learning on the job, only played corner going on his 4th year ever.

Youth in the secondary is why i still expect teams to gain chunk yards throughout the game.... but you also have to account for the fact that our O-line is the BEST in the ACC and one of the best in the country. Im confident the d-line is going to create even more pressure, helping out the secondary, against other teams with weaker o-lines during the season.
