And the distortions continue. One day the math will self correct.

Wouldn't you like to be paid that much for getting destroyed on nat'l TV by a coach more than double your age?

I'm not saying Riley is a bad coach, but at almost $7MM/yr (incl incentives), the expectation is to win every game.

Forever.

Ha, I am looking forward to the days where we even get a chance to potentially get spanked in the College Football Playoffs. Our future is brighter now with CMR gone, but we have a lot of work to do to even get to the level of those guys.

I usually agree with you but on this not so much. I'm not saying I think Riley is worth that much but the way you framed your questions was just a bit disingenuous.

His defenses have been awful but if he makes Hurts into an elite thrower next season, he will have earned every penny of it by today's football standards.

That's a lot of oil $, but it's about what the market is calling for now. Schools like OKL will continue to spend big $ in their pursuits of Nattys.

He's made the CFP his first two years as a head coach. The only other two coaches that made the playoffs the each of the last two years are Satan and Dabo. You have to bump his pay, that's just part of the game today.
I leaned towards op until I read this. Very true

How so? Too harsh?
Because that old coach he got destroyed by is Nick Saban. The expectation is not to win every game because that just isn't realistic. The expectation of him would be to consistently win the conference, make the playoffs and complete for national titles. Paying him what they did tells me that Riley is considered an elite coach by the Oklahoma administration capable of accomplishing everything I stated above. The thing is when you are consistently winning and playing against the elite programs you're not going to win every game. Riley has not won the big one yet but like I said above the OU administration thinks he can and will.

Edit. Also Saban himself just got curb stomped by Dabo in the title game but I don't see anyone saying he's not worth his salary. Dabo gets paid just as big and the guy got 70 points dropped on him in the Orange Bowl a few years ago. He also lost to Syracuse last year as well as getting smacked by Saban in the playoffs last year. All I am saying is that just because a coach is considered an elite coach and is paid like one doesn't mean they are expected to go undefeated every year.

I know NFL is different, but tell that to all the coaches that Belichick destroys every year.

Lincoln Riley may very well be worth it ... or not.

He’s had a meteoric rise in his coaching career and he’s young and 12-2 in both his seasons as head coach. That’s really great to have that going for you so early in your head coaching career at 35 years of age. He’s also 0-2 in the bowls/playoffs.

If you trade stocks you’ll understand what I mean when I say he has a huge P/E. That ridiculous salary will be justified if he continues to win like he is now, and every once in a while actually wins a playoff game.

But honestly we’re not going to know for a few years. Who knows? It’s so early in his career he hasn’t been challenged yet. He may end up being a 9-4 or 10-3 type coach long term. There is no guarantee he continues at this level, or that he even has the stamina to do It.

It will either be a really good investment for Oklahoma, or they’re overpaying for an average coach. Only time will tell if this was a good move or not.

Fair enough.

I read an article last year that talked about the falling TV ratings across all sports, and how it is translating into less money for the networks. ESPN for example is drowning because it spends so much to air games live, but isn’t getting the advertising revenue to support it.

If that continues, then when it’s time for new TV deals, the conferences won’t be getting deals as lucrative from the networks, and the teams won’t be getting as much cash from the conferences.

And that’s when the correction will happen.

fair market value - you get what you pay for and to date he has delivered

There just aren't that many guys who can win every game and a lot of teams looking for them. This reduces teams to paying a guy (Richt, Riley) even more money because he's shown the first signs of being able to be great. I don't think this will change, there will always be more teams that want to be better than they are than coaches who can make them better.
