To Those Who Called 56 fat...

I don't question kids character, but IMO McCloud not fast enough to be consistent at making the plays for his position. Hopefully I'm wrong.
What position do you think McCloud plays...I thought he played LB..which, if he still does play that position I theorize he is plenty fast enough

His game is not predicated to be a big bruising linebacker. Pinckney is a disruptive linebacker and the loss of weight and added speed will help him do that even more. At 6’1 220 that’s big enough for a college linebacker. **** roquan smith was what? 6’0.5 225 last year?

LOL - he’s listed as first team right now.

I think his usage will depend on how much we use that STRIKER alignment/package/whateveryouwanttocallit. McCloud's backup is basically going to be Smith and Finley.

In the NFL, some "starting" linebackers may only play like 35-40% of the teams defensive snaps as they are removed for a nickel that plays 60%+ of the team's snaps. The ratio doesn't work for most college teams, but maybe that is what becomes of this team with that new position they are trying to put in.

If you watch the bama has evolved on D..they use a striker/nickel back safety A Lot in order to combat today’s O’s

It's not a question of pure 40 yard dash speed. It's a question of how quickly he sees and reacts to the play. A 4.8 guy who quickly diagnoses the play will play "faster" than a 4.5 guy who is slow in reacting.

That's why IMO it's hard to convert high school DEs into LBs. No matter how fast they may be, they typically haven't developed the ability to diagnose the play that a H.S. LB or S has.

We gotta find something to do with McCloud. Just can’t have a guy like that sitting around. We have to find a prominent role for him on this D.

He needs to cross train at all of the LB spots, especially MLB.

With the likely increase of snap percentage going to a striker rather than a traditional SAM (hopefully), it would be great if we can use him as a rotation LB at another spot (in addition to SAM reps) and potentially take over for Shaq at Mike after this season. That is assuming he's up to the task of being comfortable with knowing the responsibilities of 2 LB spots and the added responsibility of manning the middle.

From a physical tools standpoint, he's better served as a MIKE than as a SAM if the Strongside role will regularly require him to be out in space (which is likely)

Right--the WILL linebacker is the backer most protected by the DL alignment and responsibility. Sure, he'll have to take on some blockers and leverage plays towards teammates, but the reality is that his main role is to be a heat seeking missile

They should be fine. You don't hold up better with bad weight and you most certainly fatigue easier. I'd suspect Mike plays at 220 pounds.
Agreed. But there is a little gray area there with regard to "bad weight". But I'm always a speed/quickness over pure size proponent, plus I also think he (Pinkney) puts a little weight back on before game 1. I can't remember what he was before, but him in the low-to-mid 220's and Shaq around 235 sounds about right to me.

If that's the case, who put em' in that position?

If a kid keeps making the same "mistakes" over and over and over again, at some point you have to question the system/scheme.

What they had Him doing last year against the pass game was for lack of a better word...retarded.

I hope they find a way to keep him off the field. Our defense was night and day better last year when he went to the bench and an extra db came on (similar to the striker this year).

No. McCloud has to do it. Kid has all the tools but his awareness is a 56/100. He gets his football IQ up he’s the best of the 3. We need him bad.

I disagree with that statement but the team would be much better with him playing well. He’s better suited in a role like Khalil Mack or Tyriq McCord (if we wanna be more realistic) switching from DE to a rush LBer role.

I think we should come up with creative ways to have him and the Striker position on the field at the same time.
