To the tape watchers, regarding OL?

I don't think the staff went from loving what they had in the room to having regrets after one game lol.

We just had our largest conference win since 2020, and it's gameday today. Let's revisit this conversation in November, when our players have actually had time to develop and get enough game snaps

Aight so we’re gona pretend that not one solid starting tackle or guard, in the nation, would have been willing to portal to a school known for o line that just went to the ship? Not one lineman in the portal or one willing to hop in the portal for us would have been a better option then going back to young centers at guard?
I think they were cool with what they had and it might’ve been a mistake. We’ll see.

I still think this lineup can work out I’m just really surprised they didn’t go and get an experienced starter to solidify

I'm with you. Some of the folks on here seem to think that players develop solely in the weight room, film room, and Greentree. Those three are all certainly important components of development, but game action is where the real plays are put on tape to be analyzed and corrected.

I'm not gona start breaking down **** player tape to prove to you we could have gotten ONE starting guard/tackle in the portal dude.

But i'm not the type to have these back and forth arguments on here that everyone has to roll their eyes and scroll past. You can have this one if you want.

There is no back and forth because you're not validating your claim with a single name. Not one. Yet again, you've dodged it and tried to change this to something it's not. I didn't ask you to break down player tape. I asked you for a name or two that we could've gotten. I provided three names earlier - two we got, one we did not.

Those folks who are rolling their eyes...... They're rolling their eyes at you.

Mensah won the ACC playing behind Dukes oline he’ll be fine. And Cantwell looked much better than SJ at guard… I don’t see how starting him at RT and moving McCoy back to LG would put Mensah at a greater risk of injury.

I think we need 2 more game films to really see who is who on this OL. I always defer to athleticism over weight/strength numbers.

People are ragging on SJ (some is justified) but there is 1 big (whiff) that is not really on him. Watch the rest of his reps, there is alot of good in there. Same with Max.

Cantwell looked timid and did not show great movement skills (could be thinking too much at this point). Same with Hawks, not much quickness on the edge.
 
Pass protection is very clearly the top priority based on our personnel, so all this talk about size/girth/length is just ghey imo. If Cantwell, Congdon, Hawks, and other behemoths could be trusted to protect Mensah they would be out there running with the 1s.

Cantwell was the only regular rotational backup and while he wasn't overmatched, it's not like he was Metrorailing people on every snap either. We'll run the ball to keep teams honest, not because we need to in order to score points.

I looked at some tape from last season and all but Cooper and Brockermeyer were in a two point stance. I don’t know the reasoning or the coaching points behind it, but maybe it’s more noticeable this year because both guards are doing it.

This is incorrect. Cooper operated out of both 2 and 3 point stances but mostly stayed in a 3 point. Samson specifically played in a 2 at left guard. (brockermeyer played center so a hand was down)


The reason they are in a 2 point stance is because Mirabal gives them the freedom to play in what they feel is most effective. This is another point from Jim Mcnally who Mirabal studies under in a sense. Mcnally thinks 2 point is a better stance overall.

Everyone talks about 3 point and 'firing off' but Mirabal runs Duo and Wide Zone... neither require "firing off" like Iso back in the old days or even inside zone requires for base blocks.

Duo you're taking 2 gather steps (someone tell Rodriguez and SJ this, please)
Wide zone you're working lateral steps to get horizontal

So the 2pt is easier in pass pro, and to ID your defender pre and post snap re movement

Thanks for the clarification and the explanation. I only looked at a handful of drives over a couple games so i must have missed cooper going back and forth. McNally has been fun to follow on twitter, he posts a lots of informative stuff.

If we simply average 4-4.5 yards per carry with this passing game to go with it, there’s no stopping us. I can live with a more boring, old school run scheme if we do that. Lyle and Mallory have the explosiveness to bounce that **** outside when the defense crashes the A-B gaps as well. I don’t think we will see another team play us the way Stanford did either, so that alone is gonna open up the run game some more. They just can’t load the box on us. It’s asking to get annihilated. Teams are gonna eventually decide to put 6 in the box and live with Fletcher and Brown getting an almost guaranteed 5 yards per carry average. Shortens the game and puts more pressure on our offense to finish drives.

Cantwell will be fine, people are quick to panic. He’s not used to playing guard so it’ll take a few games for him to settle into the position. But once he does, I could see him starting simply because he’s more well-rounded as a run/pass blocker than Buchanan or SJ. Maybe we’re all putting too much emphasis on the first game. It’s going about the way we imagined it would. Anyone who knows ball knows having 4 new starters on the OL would take multiple games to mesh and figure out who’s the right guy for each position. Clearly we’re set at tackle, which is great because we’re gonna be a pass-first team. That’s all there is to it. A lot of the bad reps on pass blocking were due to miscommunication. And SJ’s worst pass blocking rep was the very first play of the game. That could very well have been first game jitters. It happens. You get so amped up to hit someone other than your teammates, you lose focus for a moment, and that’s all it takes. They’ve undoubtedly discussed all this during film study this week, Mirabal and Mario have ripped them a new one, and they know they’ll be watching from the sideline if that continues to happen.

The cream always rises to the top. But the cream also takes time to rise.
 
I’m waiting for the OL gurus to comment on the rep where FAMU tackle pushed Cantwells **** in. he got em back on another rep but still. He must be not 100% nothing else makes sense

Merriweather is one of the guys I’m waiting to see more . I couldn’t really evaluate him because he had the knee injury in spring . Then there’s the young guys who I’d like to see mix and match. It’ll be a process to find the right five. That said we should be seeing a lot of two deep safeties going forward. That alone will be huge in helping run game.
