I'm sorry if you don't think this deserves it's own thread, but I just have something I need to be talked off the ledge about.

Let me preface this by saying I blame Mario, the staff, and the players 100.0% for the loss on Saturday. We're having a lot of discussion about refs, and this is another, so I get the inevitable rolling of the eyes on this thread in general. But this game wasn't lost by the refs, it was lost by our braindead coaches and players. But I need to explain, because I'm a little confused here.

I personally know an ACC official. He's a friend of friends, but we know each other fairly well, have spent time together and conversed plenty. He didn't do the game Saturday, but he has done games in the past. I haven't spoken to him since the spring, but in the past we have had discussions about his job, overall. I asked him about how the officials are graded, among many other things. And one thing he told me is, as you'd expect, every call or non-call is graded, but one of the "harshest" grades you can get is by making a call that is wrong or unnecessary. The example he used for me is, if there's a quick screen or sweep left, and you call a hold on the right tackle, it better be the world's worst hold, because it really has no impact on the play. Basically even if the RT wasn't even there, or never got out of his stance, the defender over him isn't making the play. And that makes sense. He didn't say this part verbatim, but the way I pretty clearly understood it was, they want you to err on the side of "non-calls" versus making calls that are borderline or bad that impact games.

So, to the tin foil hat part. I am NOT a conspiracy theory guy. At all. Maybe I'm a moron for that, but it is what it is. And when I watch Miami games, I genuinely try to watch them through non Orange and Green glasses. I'm almost never the guy who complains about refs. I try to be impartial. I'm also not trying to let this NBA stuff cloud my judgement. No, to be clear, I do not think everything is rigged. But watch this ******* play. It's 3rd and 8. The entire world knows, if Miami converts, the game is over. They have no timeouts. This is literally, 100.0%, the play of the game. If you were going to make a call or non-call to impact a game, this sure seems like the one to do it on. And back to what I said, these guys are being coached/taught to NOT throw needless flags.

If one person here can tell me with a straight face that this is a hold, kind of a hold, maybe a hold, or one ref on one planet in the entire solar system would even be confused and call this a hold, I will gladly delete this thread. But....this isn't a hold. It's not even close to a hold. It can't accidentally be interpreted as a hold. Remember, these are the refs who watch our games live. They watch tape of our games. They watch Bain get held on almost every single snap, and almost never call it. So, if you watch him all game long, and swallow the whistle, that's cool. But you CANNOT call this bull****. Not on 3rd and 8 with the literal game in the balance.

So, watch this if you have a minute and give me your opinion. As a total non-conspiracy theory guy, am I out of my mind for being REALLY ******* suspicious of this?

It’s not a hold. The defender loses his feet and is rewarded because the ref who threw flag obviously isn’t in position to see it clearly. That’s the Marion play where they picked up the DPI too. Not only should it have been at worst offsetting, we should have been given 15 yards and a 1st down.

If they are truly graded the way you say then that should be the worst grade they could for the entire game. The hold which is wrong, and then picking up a DPI after throwing it correctly.

Only thing I’ll say about that specific call was the exact same thing later that day happened in FL GA where the RT collapsed on the defender and they also called it. My guess is because it’s so startling they assume it’s a hold.

Thanks. I didn’t see that. This is out on an island, it’s not like you can kind of get caught in the wash here and think you saw something you didn’t.

I was actually more incensed about this call live than I was about them picking up the DPI on this same play, which doesn’t make sense because if they don’t pick up that flag it’s at least offsetting, obviously. But how in the world is that holding??? In a league where Bain is held every play and it’s never called? What???

People will come at you for pointing out egregious officiating, but they are telling on themselves at that point. People are allowed to ***** about coaching and the refs.

Two things can be true at once:

1) We deserved to lose the game because of all the self-inflicted mistakes. Mario, once again, couldn’t get his team motivated to show up against an average ACC team. It’s all on him.

AND

2) The officials were ******* horrendous. They bailed out SMU multiple times and kept them in the game. Anyone who’s not an SMU fan will admit this. ****, even some of them will admit they were lucky. I was in the “Miami” section of the stadium, surrounded by mostly Canes. There were four SMU fans in front of me. After the PI was picked up and everyone started booing, they just laughed and shrugged their shoulders like “oh well.” They didn’t even try to argue that it wasn’t a PI. They knew it was.

And that’s just one example. What about what happened to Jojo in the end zone? The reversed fumble? The roughing the passer? I could go on and on. The refs were garbage. Mario should have taken the fine and lit into them publicly because it’s bull****. It was so bad that you have to wonder if one of them had money on the game because how could the officiating be so bad in one direction?

Regardless, we let them hang around, leaving the game in the hands of the refs. And that’s on Mario. I wasn’t alive in the 80s, but Jimmy Johnson was right when he said what he said after the Gary fumble in 88.

The Bain stuff makes absolutely ZERO sense but I assume some of it is his not acting very animated. Either way, it’s criminal.

Clearly, the defender lost his footing as he was about to make contact. Love the former GT running back saying he slammed him down. What is he drinking? Couldn’t tell from the video where the official who threw the flag was positioned. Not sure his angle & what he saw. Guess is official made an assumption & panicked. Horrible call.

Bro this sequence of three wild *** calls on a play that would have ended the game is suspect as **** and deserves an investigation.

Another point people may not be thinking about is when you know your hammering one team with calls refs dont let the other side just play thru calls. They even it up. That’s done in every single sport all the time. But in this instance they do the exact opposite they actually pull the flag. That’s so FN insane to me that’s it’s obvious these guys are on the take.

Barber got his hands outside the shoulder pads, and pulled the edge to the ground by the jersey before jumping on him. That was an actual hold. Mauigoa just one armed a dude down that was already off balance.

That call on Mauigoa was one of the worst in recent memory. And that’s saying a lot.

There is no world that is a hold.

Right? I just can’t shake this one. Look at Toney in the middle of the field in the clip I posted, too. He’s bear hugged and clearly held. I don’t even care much about that because that does get missed. Again, I keep going back to the conversation I had with a literal ACC official. It’s like the last possession in a basketball game, the refs have a propensity to swallow the whistle. So you don’t wanna call Toney being held, ok. Awful, but you’re not making a call. But to make this holding call on what is nowhere ******* near a hold….this one’s killing me more than any in recent memory.

In the grand scheme, honestly if they don’t call this and pick up the DPI, the result is the same. But this just smells so bad to me. No matter what, it’s gonna be 3rd and 18. Watch this.

The refs have been out for us this year. Last year was not as bad but this year they are out for us.

Ok that’s fair I didn’t break down I just remember seeing it happen and saying wtf that’s the same thing and they did throw the flag

Yeah, I was sort of rooting for UF (I live in Atlanta and just didn’t want to hear **** about Beck from all the UGA fans I work with) and thought it was a garbage call at first, but rewound it and while it definitely happens a lot and isn’t called it looked like an actual hold to me.
