The root problem is the administration. They really haven't proven that they truly support this program and the most obvious symptom of that is Blake James. We need a real AD and we need one desperately. Was it a mistake to hire Manny Diaz as HC? I can't really say for sure yet but I will say that I want him to succeed. I want Manny Diaz to be the coach to finally get this program going in the right direction and turn it into the type of program we all know it can be. Why do I want Manny to succeed? Is it because I'm Cuban and Diaz is Cuban? No! I want him to succeed because he is the current head coach and despite the flaws he may or may not have, I know that Diaz truly wants to bring Miami back. I know that he is passionate about this program and that he wants to keep this job for as long as possible. Golden didn't give a **** about UM at the end of the day and it showed. Richt cared but he was burnt out and the game had passed him by.
Do I think Diaz was the best possible hire? Probably not but that is irrelevant since he is our coach now. Diaz does have some positives as he is young, energetic and aggressive. I support Diaz 100% because I support UM 100%. We better hope that Diaz proves to be capable of being the guy because he is all we have.
Having said that, the OP is absolutely right! Diaz did a great job in firing the entire offensive staff and bringing in Dan Enos. Enos is very experienced, knowledgeable, respected and he has been a head coach. Diaz also made a fantastic hire for S&C with David Feeley and he also fired the entire recruiting department and replaced them all. Manny made one mistake however. He assumed that the defense would remain as it was under him and thought that all he needed to do was hire a DC who was familiar with his scheme and retain all the defensive position coaches. Huge mistake! Instead of making conceptual continuity on defense the main factor in hiring a DC he should have done exactly what he did with the offense no matter how good the defense was under him as DC. Diaz should have hired the very best possible candidate that was qualified to be the Defensive Coordinator Of the Miami Hurricanes then make sure that at least a couple of the new position coaches were excellent recruiters. He made another mistake by not going out and getting the best possible candidate to coach our special teams.
So what we have right now is a DC in Baker who has no P5 coordinator experience backed up by a relatively young and inexperienced staff and boy does it show! Losing Simpson to the NFL hurt badly as the only experienced coach on defense(Stroud) was originally hired to be a support staff analyst and that shows as well.
I understand that Baker has only coached 2 games but so far in those 2 games the defense has looked lost. We have tackled poorly, and there have been constant communication breakdowns to go along with sloppy play. Also many players who were expected to have great seasons like Quarterman, Pinckney and Garvin have barely shown up. The defense as a whole seems uncharacteristically tentative and the overall play has been disjointed and erratic. We don't seem to be playing with the same aggression and the players body language seems to suggest that they are not buying in to whatever Baker is selling.
Personally, Baker seems to be a little in over his head to be honest. He doesn't seem to understand his personel and that has manifested itself in the way he calls a game. It almost seems as if he is calling plays like he was still coaching La Tech. Baker doesn't seem to have a very good feel for the flow of a game and despite being described as an "aggressive" coordinator in the Diaz mold, he tends to give much too much respect to the opposing offense. Again it seems like he forgets the caliber of personel he has at his disposal and as a result he becomes more conservative that he needs to be. Baker strikes me as if this stage is too big for him.
I don't care for Baker as our defensive coordinator and frankly I think that he is a weak link. Having a young staff of position coaches behind him has served to exacerbate the issue. I hope that Baker turns it around but if he doesn't this is something that Diaz will not be able to stick his head in the ground and ignore. Diaz may very well be put in a position to fire his friend after one year. I'm going to hold out hope that as the new safeties gain experience and Silvera and Bolden are added to the mix that things will become more cohesive and we begin to look like a UM defense again. Who knows. Maybe Baker gets into his groove once he gets the hang of coaching at this level.
