Its crunch time for Palmetto Bay (Fla.) Westminster safety Tim Irvin as his January 3rd Army All-American game commitment is looming. The Sunshine State defender will decide from West Virginia, Texas, Florida and Miami.

Having taken his official visits already, all that was left before the dead period was hearing sales pitches from each of his finalists.

Last week Irvin got a chance to meet with Jim McElwain for the very first time.

The new Gators head man impressed the 5-foot-8, 182-pounder during their visit.

"He's a pretty cool dude," said Irvin of McElwain. "When I met him, he sounded like a great coach and he knows what he wants to do. I feel like he's going to do good things for that team."

Coach McElwain also expressed the need Florida has for a player with Irvin's skill set.

"He told me that I could have an impact next year on defense and on special teams," said Irvin. "I could come in at the nickel safety and have a chance to play and make an impact as a true freshman."

The Gators also recently made news with the hiring of former Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins. At this time Irvin doesn't know much about him, but said he plants to learn more in the near future.

"I think Florida made a good hire," said Irvin of Collins. "We haven't met yet because it's a dead period, but I'll talk to him soon and get to know him before I commit."

One big lingering cloud hanging over Irvin's recruitment is whether or not current defensive backs coachTravaris Robinson will remain on the Florida staff. If Robinson does leave Gainesville, it would hurt UF's chances.

"He'll have a big influence on my decision," said Irvin of Robinson. "Me and coach T-Rob have a great relationship and I want to get coached by him. That will mean a lot."

Heading into the final few weeks Irvin states none of his four finalist have the edge.

After seeing all these guys commit to Texas lately i just have a feeling thats where he goes if T-Rob goes to Auburn or wherever else he could go away from Florida

Isn't this kid related to Michael Irvin? If so, what a major disappointment this young man will not be playing for The U!

Canesports only gets to talk to his uncle yet it appears the Florida rivals site talks to him directly. Sort of telling on that alone.

Wow..A great coach, cool dude and knows what he wants to do..Hello Gator , cannot believe the Irvin name is going to reside in Gainsville for four years..

a disgrace

No, it's not.

Would you play for Dorito/Williams?

It'd be a disgrace to commit to a staff that you know would hinder your skills only because your Uncle went there 25 years ago.

i meant its a disgrace that we still have a staff here that can't close someone with the last name "Irvin"

The Irvin is from his own blood father who did NOT ball play at the U; Dad played elsewhere and also COACHED elsewhere to this day.
Michael I. is a relative, but his Dad the Mr. Irvin to Tim, is way closer. Michael Irvin has his own son to be concerned about.

Not to be negative, but 5'8" and 182 at safety? What kind of build does he have. Does he look like a guy who can grow to 6' and 210? How about his biological father, what kind of size is in his family?

Yeah it clearly qualifies as a disgrace that our program is so busted and deep in the toilet that we can't get what should be an automatic commitment.
