Thoughts on the UF game and weekend

Since you pay so much attention to Safety play...

Our first four games last year looked pretty good defensively from a big picture (score) perspective once the dust settled.

What is it about these first four games that convinces you we aren't seeing fool's gold right now?

Whatever Guidry said to blame another player, Harris had already flashed an atrocious angle trying to fill the alley against UF. Within the first 4 games, we already showed cracks against USF’s motion. Beyond bad nickel play, we had poor communication passing players off and that stuff immediately should send alarm signals ringing.

That said, I don’t think our Safeties have been sufficiently tested vertically yet and made a recent post about it. So far, they appear more sound in run fits, though. #8 has played very well on plays he’s facing. I did mention he got spun around on a couple routes against ND.

And, when teams have used basic motion against us, they haven’t immediately lost leverage on mere alignment. That’s not groundbreaking stuff, but it would have been a huge difference to the chaos we saw last year.

We will find out a ton more in 2 weeks, as those Wing T concepts test DTs, but then also test Safeties filling the C and alley. And, I believe FSU will test them vertically, too. I am concerned about #7 getting to certain spots. I know #13 plays on 3rd and long, but if I’m FSU, I test #7 with speed to corner routes and down the seam.

I could be wrong but Malzahn isn't that for off of what Rich Rodriguez was doing (he was NCAA first big adapter of triple option out of gun).

But I'd say the passing game is simple, deep shots slants and flats off of PA.

But you're right if the guys stay in there run lane and the backside ends just attack just play proper 50/50, we should be fine.

He doesn't do anything earth shattering. VS East TAMU, the OL didn't hold up as well as you'd like.

We really need Trader and Lyle back ASAP.

Last year looks so much different when you look at Mario’s offenses year after year because of the explosive rate.

I hoped it was Mario turning a corner and not just Cam Ward.

So far this year’s offense is the typical Mario offense. According to SP+ analytics we are near the top tier in down to down success rate.

The absolute bottom tier for explosive rate on our successful plays. We are far closer to Iowa’s offense for explosive rate than we are merely “good” explosive rate teams like Syracuse.

That’s every Mario offense outside of Cam.

True, but we've played in rain 3 or 4 games.
