The Canes outclassed a gritty Ball St team in a 62-0 beatdown which ultimately featured wave after wave of young talent getting significant PT & upholding the standard set by the starters. Was great to see the sophomores & freshmen bringing it. I love seeing them absolutely wreck on kick coverage & laying the boom on D. Don't want to get complacent but man the future's looking bright. Love that Mario's vision for the program is starting to come together in a big way.
750 yards of Offense in one game is more than 5 FBS schools have in three games this season (according to ESPN.com). Kentucky only has 784 yds in three games. FSU has 822 yds in three games. Not bad. Ball St only had 115 yds of total O (including 6 yds rushing). Not quite the -43 rushing yds Missouri had against the 1989 Canes but, again, not bad.
Every single player that contributed to this dominant win deserves props but here are thoughts on some standouts:
1) Jacolby George: He's really grown as a player & as a leader on the team. Had a huge highlight play against UF but otherwise had a relatively quiet start to the season. Was thrilled for him that he went off in this game & started racking up some nice stats. He deserves it. He's unquestionably one of the leaders on this offense.
2) Wesley Bissainthe: South Florida Canes fans have been high on Wes for a long time (dating back to his recruitment). He's now showing clearly what the hype was all about. He looks imposing out there, was everywhere, and was laying the boom (within the rules). Really happy for him. Hope he keeps working hard & getting to yet another level.
3) Cam Ward: Love watching him play. Around 315 yds at the half is ridiculous. 5 TDs in a little over two qtrs ain't bad either. Looking forward to seeing what he can do when the offense really starts clicking.
4) Emory: 11/12 just isn't good enough! We demand perfection here on CIS. Great half by Emory who is a fighter & continues to improve.
5) Tyler Baron: I heard there was a mugging sometime between 5:30 - 8:30 pm Eastern in the Miami Gardens area. After some investigation, it appears that the Baron did it in the pantry with a candlestick. Tyler has been such a great addition to the team. His outstanding play is making him a big name nationally. Love seeing him roaring off the edge and piling up the sacks.
6) Simeon Barrow: Was my 2nd favorite addition in the transfer portal (after Cam Ward). Love an athletic war daddy that plays disciplined but also can disrupt & finish plays for TFLs & sacks. Has a little old school Cane in him. Really showed out in this game. Huge addition to the team (together with CJ Clark & Cook).
7) Elijah Alston: Knew he was super highly rated by PFF as a pass rusher but wasn't sure if his comp was weak. I think we have the answer now that he's a baller & is bringing it. He's been really good so far.
8) Bryant, OJ Fred, Popo & BW: Upheld the standard when they came in & made some really great splash plays. The future is bright.
Nit picks (but some of these will be really important):
1) In the 1st Half, run game was not effective running into stacked box. Ajay Allen's two explosive runs in the 2nd half dramatically altered the run game stats (and showed me that Ajay has some real potential & is developing nicely) but our run game need to improve as we head into critical games against our better opponents. It was slow to get going in the first half. Ajay needs to step up & show out and CJ Jr needs to have more plays called for him (plays where he's not required to block AT ALL such as reverses, toss sweeps, wheel routes, and splitting out as a WR). CJ is like a cheat code & is literally scoring a TD on one out of every three touches. He needs more touches.
2) Consistently Make Better Decisions on Kick Returns. Big Fan of Ray Ray & will never forget his leadership of his recruiting class. He also has a great work ethic & is starting to put it together. However, he did not make great decisions against Ball St as to when to field & return kicks...and on one of those his teammate made a bad block in the back (which compounded the problem inside our own 20). Against Ball St we survived it ok. What if that's against Syracuse in a tied game in the fourth qtr in a raucous Carrier Dome? Could cost us the game. Ray Ray must not field kicks inside his own 5 yard line. He needs to really get the decision-making aspect down pat fast or he should not be back there.
3) Excessive Penalties. We were super disciplined against UF (absolutely loved that about that game). Not so much against Ball St (maybe due in part to virtually the entire roster playing). One of those was what looked like a bs call against Bissainthe on that fantastic hit to the sternum but still. Got to play disciplined & unselfish ball (especially against our toughest opponents). Penalties could cost us in the closest games.
This team is fun to watch. Pulling hard for them to have continued success this season. Take every game one game at a time & pretend like we're 0-0. The USF game will be physical & they have enough talent to seriously test us. We'll need to dominate them physically & accord them all of the respect they deserve. If we play hard & stay disciplined, our superior talent should win out by the end but it's going to be a dog fight until the end of the fourth quarter.
