Thoughts on Matt Eberflus for DC?

I am new to the board although I have been following the threads for the past few months. I, just like many of you all, really wanted Aranda as the DC. Orlando would also be great. Nonetheless, Aranda is obviously not longer available and Orlando may be a long shot to say the least. I am inclined to believe that due to how long it is taking Richt to make the announcement, our next DC could very well be a position coach from the NFL. If that is the case, Matt Eberflus would be a great option in my honest opinion.

Many of you have pointed out the importance of the continuity between the D line coach and the DC. Also, I really believe that Kool would have never joined our beloved U family without some inclination to who may be the new DC. Kool was the D line coach under Eberflus at Missouri for over 7 years. He also ran a very aggressive 4-3 scheme. Eberflus is now the linebackers coach for the Dallas Cowboys. By no way am I claiming to have some type of inside information. I am just saying that the possibility of us getting an NFL position coach seems to be getting stronger as each day passes by. With that being said, if we are going to go that route, I think Matt Eberflus being a strong candidate, makes a lot of sense.

The last LB coach Richt hired from the Cowgirls was Todd Grantham....id be skeptical as **** if he was the hire

Would be a fine hire - he is the LB coach for the Dallas Cowboys for fak sake, he would be 2x the coach we had at DC for the last 15 years including Onion who would not be allowed to mix the Gatorade at Dallas now. Are there bigger names that would have been better hires? Yes for sure. But compare a defensive staff of the LB coach of the Cowboys, Coach kuul, and possibly the LSU DB coach to the **** we have had here for a few years. Sprinkle in a SC that is not an incompetent boob and only the most self-hating, pitiful Canes fans would not have a giant boner if that is how it shaped up. Would be a borderline savage staff. This board as usual, sets up a lot of binary scenarios - either get Coach X or it is a Total meltdown failure. That, of course, is not real life. These are real people with families, financial considerations, other goals, health concerns, allegiances, etc. Eberflus would significantly upgrade the position in the short term and if he doesnt pan out, he gets fired and we move on. No biggie. Richt will get this right, he always has, and he always will. His opinion and perspective is worth far more than the retards that post here who never have been in a decision-making position of any kind their entire life. So in sum, would he be an A=, HR hire? No, not really. Would he significantly upgrade and bring much more competence to the defensive staff than we have had here in years? Absolutely. We have never even won the ACC, are a mockery in College Football, and have been ridden into the ground since 2005....we are going to have to scratch and claw out of this. It is going to be a long, long road despite what some of the buffoons here babble about, but we are heading again in the right direction and we will get there.

Well, I've never heard of Matt Eberflus and don't know a **** thing about the guy. That being said, The Grim Richter has already earned my trust by dumping virtually the entire garbage staff, hiring coach Kool and giving Swassey his walking papers. You better believe he means business! If The Grim Richter thinks Matt Eberflus is right for the DC gig then who the fack am I to question him.

If it's him, you guys are gonna get your wish, because he's a cover 2 guy all the way.

He installed it at Mizzou after visiting with Lovie Smith when he was the DC of the Rams.

Time to let loose the savages

P.S. Jermaine Grace should become a very...very...VERY wealthy man because of this development

Seems like he'd be a better candidate than Kirk Olivadotti from the NFL ranks.

And If we're grabbing an NFL position coach, let's get a guy with experience calling defenses as a DC.

I prefer Chavis, Orlando, or Shoop ... But, of the names that have been mentioned, this guy is probably better than Jancek, Martinez, Olivadotti and BVG. Likely, better than Raymond or Ward, too.

IRVING, Texas – Matt Eberflus came to the Cowboys in 2011 as Rob Ryan’s wingman.

When Ryan was jettisoned after the 2012 season, the Cowboys made sure they kept Eberflus, their linebackers coach, despite making the move from Ryan’s 3-4 to Monte Kiffin’s 4-3.

Even though Eberflus’ only NFL experience is in the 3-4, he was largely a 4-3 defensive coordinator at Missouri where he developed ties with one of Kiffin’s disciples, Lovie Smith, and Tony Dungy.

“I met Lovie Smith in the early 2000s when he was in St. Louis and he came over to show us some of the system, and the next year we switched our defense to a 4-3,” Eberflus said. “In seven of the eight years we ran Lovie’s defense and we went up to the Colts and Tony Dungy. Every spring we’d go up to see Lovie in Chicago and put that system in, and they’re still running it at Missouri today.”

Eberflus, secondary coach Jerome Henderson, assistant secondary coach Joe Baker and defensive assistant Ben Bloom are the holdovers from Ryan’s staff remaining with Kiffin.

Eberflus said the terminology is the same that he used at Missouri.

“It’s helped immensely,” Eberflus said. “I’ve lived in that and worked in that for eight years now and now I’m really getting to the detail that Kif and (Rod Marinelli) want. From the pro system to the college system there’s a lot more details, but it’s fun to do and fun to go back to.”

quick research on him has got me impressed, played for Nick Saban at Toledo and was pretty good. His defensive teachers havve been some of the best to ever do it in the league. Hand picked by Rob Ryan and was considered too valuable to let go after Ryan was fired. Pretty good defenses while at Missouri and top notch recruiter to boot

Ryan calls linebacker coach Matt Eberflus the DeMarcus Ware of coaches

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is the man in charge of the Cowboys new defense. But he is the first to tell you that linebackers coach Matt Eberflus is the brains behind the operation.
Ryan thinks so highly of Eberflus that he calls him the "DeMarcus Ware of coaches."
Ware, who is considered the best pass rusher in the league, certainly knows why.
"He changes stuff everyday," Ware said. "He is really well rounded on how to put players in certain positions to succeed. He knows offenses and how to to attack them."
-- Clarence Hill Jr.

Matt Eberflus is entering his fifth year as the linebackers coach for the Cowboys. Eberflus may have had his most impressive year as a coach in 2014 when he lost Sean Lee in OTAs, lost DeVonte Holloman in preseason, and lost weakside linebacker Justin Durant to an injury after Week 8 - but delivered a strong linebacker performance anyway. Eberflus is credited with making the twice-retired Rolando McClain a formidable force in the middle of the defense and molding rookie linebacker Anthony Hitchens into an NFL starter. With the return of Sean Lee, another draft pick, targeted free agent acquisitions, and maybe another good year out of McClain, Eberflus could easily find himself on another team's coaching radar.

Try doing a search next time... He's been discussed before

This board is starting to really get cluttered with the same subject and people..

being a cowboy fan this excites me, he is a great coach, **** already better than Paul Williams in how he teaches DBs basic backpedaling drills. check this video out and tell me our corners did not even know the basics.. JerseyCanes, I prefaced my post by saying that I was new to this board. Unfortunately, I didn't see the previous thread regarding Eberflus. I just wanted to create some dialog around a topic that was of interest to me and felt like there may be common interest from others on this board. That's all I was trying to do guy.

From looking at some Cowboy fan boards, it seems like most want Marinelli out and Eberflus to take over at DC. Intriguing guy. I like what I've seen and read.
