Thoughts on Manny Diaz

Miami is due for some coaching stability within the football program. The Canes could be on a dynasty type run here. Why bail now?

We are on the cusp of immortalizing Diaz with his idea of the Turnover Chain and the way this defense is staying. I hope he sticks around.
 
Manny Diaz and Craig Kuligowski are not going anywhere anytime soon.

For starters most of the assistant coaches are committed to building this program back into the powerhouse it once was and should be. Someone made a remark about us possibly being at the beginning of a dynasty type run and that is exactly what the goal is. In the big picture we are just starting out and that should have every fan of this program energized.

I also believe that Manny Diaz is already the head coach in waiting while Kuligowski is the DC in waiting. Mr. Quarterman alluded to this in another thread and I believe it as it makes perfect sense to me. The rest of the staff I'm not exactly sure of but at this point I believe that Rumph and Banda want to see this entire process through and will most likely be here for a few more years. Just my opinion.

Having said all of this and assuming that the above theory about Diaz and Kool is correct what I find most interesting is who will be taking the reins of the offense once Richt calls it a day. I would think that this coach has not been hired yet so look for the 10th coach we hire in the off-season to be a highly qualified offensive mind as I assume Richt will want continuity within the staff once he leaves. That's all I've got and remember this is JMO.

From the types of things he says in interviews, he is just so Miami.

He really understands the culture down here through and through and is presumably extremely connected to community stemming from his dads tenure as the Mayor.

I really believe that he has his sights set on becoming the head coach after Mark Richt.

I'm predicting that around the time 2020 season rolls around (which Richt will be in year 5 and may coach another 3), they'll give Diaz a "Head Coach In Waiting" title.

I could see Diaz being that "lifer" coach here for 20+ years.

I know the idea of a coach staying forever is comforting to most but I really prefer new HC every 5 years or so. Look at most long term coaches results where it matter. St Bobby coached at FSU for like 50 years with TWO NCs, Dennis got that many in 5 or 6. Joe Pa was at psu for 100 years and also won 2, I think. Is that what we want? For every Saban that are a 100000 Bobby's.

Given our fan base, do you really think a coach could survive here 20 or even 10 years if they only won 1 or maybe 2 NCs. Nope, this is Miami, and much like our beaches, we need fresh meat every few years. If you want Diaz to replace Mark, he needs to take a different HC job and come back with experience. Mark should be good for 4 more after this year and then we'll see. I like Manny if he gets that HC experience but if not that dude at UVA looked really good the other day.

I just don't have the feeling that he will entertain offers until a national title is won. And then, if Richt finally gets his title, he may well choose to ride off into the sunset and become a Coconut Grovite retiree, at which point it would seem like a slam dunk that Manny would take over.

An amusing thought to entertain is that this kind of scenario could present itself earlier than we ever thought possible. I think most of us had the idea that a large part of Richt's tenure was going to be a 3-5 year rebuild before getting into the conversation as a contender. I thought that maybe N'Kosi's second full year as a starter would be it. I figured Rosier would win the starting job this year, but that our absolute best possible outcome with him was a 2-loss regular season and *maybe* a Coastal title.

Manny is home and winning Miami style. That will be a big hold on him. He has been elsewhere and tried to make them Miami but no good. Kul is in Heaven for himself. There in no place on earth he can recruit the ideal DEs for his system like Miami. Mizzo was stupid beyond belief to fire him. He has history of wanting to coach Dline. I doubt he leaves Miami and he might not be interested in the DC slot. Miami is a great place to be winning and Mark seems to be a pleasant boss. Why leave?
 
Mark Richt is 57. It's not like he's 70. I'm not sure why everyone is predicting he's retiring soon? He's finally at home. He's regenerated this program and is actually appreciated/praised unlike his time in Athens.

I do think Manny will eventually get some HC experience elsewhere. I don't think it'll be this year though. I'd be surprised if he takes a job like UCF, USF, **** even MSU. I could see him take the Kirby Smart path of showing his worth as the nation's top DC for a while and then getting a chance at a big time program.

Either way, the future is bright.
 
Who is the highest paid DC in the country? Brent Venables? Pay Manny the same with a bigger NC bonus. That pays him better than probably 80% of the HC jobs in FBS. Problem solved, at least for now.

The way this staff has turned the program around, the value the University has seen come from the turnaround, it is time we have one of the biggest coaching budgets in the country. NOT to do so would mean throwing money away.

It really is that simple for this staff. Pay them more than they can make by leaving, and they will stay, at least for a little while longer.
 
Richt is an old 57. he walks like he has cement in his shoes. when he jumped over the player going out of bounds in the GT game (or was it 'Cuse?) his vertical had to be negative.

he'll probably be here 4 yrs more tops.

I heard he is actually too old to stand on the sidelines for a full game. He has a twin brother, Rark Micht, who will stand in for him for parts of the game so Mark can get IV treatments in the locker room before each quarter.

Mark also lost the ability to form complete sentences. His twin brother is the one doing press conferences after the game.

The ROI has been staggering, don't stop now, keep building the brand and product and the University will benefit dramatically.
