Thoughts on Brad Kaaya

Another thought i have is Jacory beat UVa as a freshman on the road with 2 clutch TD throws, one to tie and one to win in OT, with a bunch of freshman around him.

Kaaya supposedly has better talent, with better talent around him, and better OC but got blown out by them??

I monitored this and other boards last year and never heard one negative thing said a out Stacy Coley. He was annointed by many of you guys as a phenom and certain day one draft pick. Then this season comes and you see all the warts and now all of a sudden he sucks and is garbage. I saw a lot of weakness in his game like I see weaknesses in Kaaya game. My point to tbis thread was to reveal some of the weaknesses in Kaaya's game that needs to be addressed for him to acheive elite QB status he is capable of. Kaaya simply needs to work on his weaknesses in the off season so that he is prepared next to overcome the things that currently affect his performance. Unlike Stacy Coley who unless he gets in the weight room, works on his hands and builds up his mental toughness, will be a bust and potential transfer candidate.

The only thing that concerns me is the lack of urgency during the two minute offense. Hopefully good coaching can correct/improve that in BK.

If you read my post I said he is inconsistant with his throws. In some instances he makes poorous throws. I would consider his misses to Coley on Saturday and misses to Dorsett throughout the year as poorous because of how open they were and he only needed to put air under them to complete them.

Can you define poourus throw for me?

I want to make sure we're on the same page before I respond.

I consider a poorous throw one that doesn't hit its intended target because it is rushed or the QB doesn't use proper mechanics when making the throw. As many great throws BK has made, he has made poorous throws as I defined. An example was the early throw to Coley in the UVA game. Coley runs a great route and Kaaya simply needs to take his time settle in set his feet and let it go with a little air under it. Instead Kaaya rushes it and throws the ball on a line several yards over his head. Now, I wouldn't have mentioned this if it were a not a regular accurance. He has missed on several easy key passes due to rushing or bad mechanics. These are the type of shots you get once a game before the defense adjusts. Notice Coley never got another deep ball. On the fragile team we have, throws like that are a hurt.

I am first and foremost a fan of BK. When he announced his commitment to the U, I was estatic. His HS tape is sick, he performed really well in all the camps and to me was a real steal at the QB position. He came in late and still won the job which is a testiment to his abilities and also a lack of competition at the position. As I have watch his maturation through the season, I am starting to realize a real weaknesses that are giving me pause about his overall game.
1. His accuracy on deep balls is shaky and inconsistant. He has made some beautiful throws under duress and has made some poorous throws with no pressure. The missed throw on the potential Coley TD is the most blatant example but there were other misses Saturday that could not be contributed to pressure. He has also missed Dorsett, Walford and Berrios countless times this season as well so familarity is no excuse.
2. His pocket presence is atrocious. He almost never moves once he is set. There is no internal clock in his head that tells him to move up in the pocket or run. The sack in which he almost got killed due to Sonny's inadequacies at Ol could have been avoided if he just realized who was blocking for him on the right side and just cheated up. Sonny got burnt on the outside and tried to ride his man out. Unfortunately it was right into an unsuspecting BK who had no idea what was coming.
3. He throws a nice ball but his delivery is slow which in combination with poor pocket presence and lack of athletism is a big problem. If you ever notice when he gets pressured he still throws with the same motion. He doesn't shorten it up ala a Jameis Winston who is concerned with getting it out and avoiding sacks. Now I know Jameis is Jameis but there has to be a sense of urgency there.
4. He is slow on his progressions. This is absolutely understandable and is easiliy cured with continued experience and a full offseason.
5. This all equates to him needed time to pick teams apart. This means we need to be able to establish the run and hold blocks upfront. Our OL is solid in light of all the injuries but is suseptable to teams that are intent on blitzing. If you watch the UVA game, early on there was no pressure and BK hurt them. When UVA switched it up, and added pressure it changed the game and all of the above factors came in to play.

The bottomline is right now BK is a liability back there if teams decide to pressure him. Teams do not go all out when there is an ability by the QB to get rid of the ball quickly or run effectively. That is a lot of pressure to put on an OL that has little or no depth and starting rookies. BK has work to do if he is gonna be the QB we a believe he can be

Kaaya also has had serious problems completing passes that arent towards the middle of the field consistently

but the main reason im not sold on Kaaya is he doesnt have an IT factor about him that allows him to make winning plays in pressure situations... lacks confidence, every time the 4th quarter comes he looks like he's lost in space.

My thoughts are that he is a stud. I do agree with the sentiment that he could use some added strength and lateral quickness.

He had ZERO chance against UVA though. For as great as the OL played against FSU, they were equally bad vs. UVA.

Kaaya had zero chance against every team he's faced that decided to show up that day... when FSU decided to show up in the 2nd, he was done, when UVa put the pressure on him, the same.

The excuse when he choked the FSU game away was he was a little 18 year old, FSU is loaded, he had no chance... UVa doesnt fit into that excuse because they suck, yet Kaaya didnt even look like he could get it done in the 2nd half.

He would have been better off redshirted because he is not what many of you said he was going into the season.

NEGGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I not gonna be that harsh. Bottom line, there are slight moves Kaaya has to develop in the pocket so that he can get the ball off in lieu of a great OL. Physically challeged QB's like Marino, Brady. and Manning a have mastered slight movements in the pocket to buy time. Just look a Jack Allison's film. He does it already and he is in high school. I have pointed out things he can work on.

Not a perfect spiral but you couldn't ask for a better throw... Dorsett didn't have to wait on the ball, it him in stride

Keep nitpicking, if you don't think this kid knows what his weaknesses are you haven't heard or read a thing about him...

I'll tell you where he is just like Peyton, it's upstairs, he's cerebral, a thinking man's QB

Steven Morris made occasional throws like that or better. See TD he throw to Coley in South Florida game last year. Dude had a busted wheel and had a guy ready to cave his chest in when he released it. And we all know how inconsistant Stephen Morris was. Watch video of the easier throw he missed on Coley in that same game.
