Thought exercise while we wait for coordinators

You're in charge. What rule changes would you make to improve coach/player movement in college football? Here are a few ideas. Some a simple and reasonable, others are way out there meant to spur friendly debate. Provide your ideas as well.
  • Coaches at other schools are not allowed to be contacted/interviewed until all conference championship games are done. If you want to promote from within that is fine.
  • Move ESD up to end of July and limit amount of ESD spots per team. Something like 5-10/team. That way you sign your top guys you have zero doubts on, but there isn't as huge of a rush to make a coaching change early.
  • If a head coach leaves and player follows him to his new school, he must sit out a year.
  • The portal is closed during the season until all conference championship games are done. You can get a hardship waiver if there is a family emergency.
  • You have to wait two years to transfer after signing or else have to sit out a year like you used to. So after sophomore or redshirt freshman year. This reduces the numbers in the portal. Also reduces NIL shenanigans. Hardship waiver still applicable.
  • Reduce football scholarships to 80.
  • Set NIL cap. Should be reasonable to allow players to profit, but not allow insane classes like TAMU's reported $30m. Something like $50-100k max per player per year.
  • Make a commitment mean something. It's non-binding and player can still get out of it, but there would be something to sign that gives benefits to both sides, such as:
    • Player may take a second OV to the school (or maybe however many he wants; still 5 max).
    • Coach of committed school may discuss player publicly
    • Player may not take visits to other schools (OV or UV) while verbally committed to another school
    • If a player decommits, there is a mandatory waiting period before they can visit or sign with a new school, like one or two weeks. Prevents last minute trolling and flips on ESD/NSD. Exception being if there is a head coaching change.
There you go. Have at it.

LOL, actually the seeds of some decent ideas in there, but OP is clearly suffering from mass formation psychosis if he expected to spur "friendly debate".

There needs to be something put in place to create parity again. Whether that is limiting coach pay or numbers on coaching staff or NIL deals.

An on field rule change is any player hurt has to sit out the remaining drive, to stop the fake injuries.
If the goal really is parity, it seems all that would need to happen is to actually enforce the rules already on the books equally for everyone.

I don't think new rules are going to solve anything, parity-wise, as long as Baga can do anything they want, but a kid taking a free steak at Private University becomes a capital case.

First of all, I never said these were all my ideas or I agreed with them all. Just spurring conversation. Some are crazy. Again, I straight up led with that.

Second, regarding all this capitalism talk, pretty sure the NBA and NFL both have salary caps, and the NBA has max contracts. It's free reign within those parameters. This thing is basically professionalism now anyway, so do we let it all go to the 5-6 richest schools or do we try to, in any way, maintain competitive balance?

People complain about having the same teams every year, so why are we complaining about ideas to balance thing out some?

Absolutely agree with this. Sit out rest of the drive unless that team calls a timeout. That would be the exception.

I disagree with the NIL cap. Fans may hate it, but players should get as much NIL money as someone’s willing to pay.

Most posters aren’t going to bother with a thought process and discussion of the issues.

Complaints, insults, and memes…now you’re talking.

I'm not complaining, just making jokes about some of the ridiculous criticisms you are about to get. Smile and laugh - you'll live longer.

BTW, to answer your last question - see post #22.

Totally agree with the injury rule. That **** is ridiculous.

We actually have parity, except at the summit. This year we has UGA, Bama, and everyone else. Ohio State slipped a bit, allowing Michigan in the party, and Clemson had a down season. Even Bama was a mental mistake from a Auburn RB and 95+ yard TD drive from losing at Auburn and being a two-loss team.

A key problem is E$PN and the $EC muscling CFB and spreading the propaganda the $EC is the best conference top-to-bottom because Bama has been dominant for a decade. In reality that conference is Bama followed by UGA (this year notwithstanding), followed by above-average to mediocre programs. Had Bama lost to Auburn but still beaten UGA in the $ECCG they would have still been voted into the CFP.

Full parity and proper CFPs will never occur until another conference(s) can build teams that can consistently beat Bama/UGA. Clemson was one such team but CFB needs another three or four. Maybe Mario and Lincoln Riley (USC) can build up to their program’s past successes. Maybe Dabo can course correct and get Clemson back to elite. Maybe Ohio State can make the leap.

I’m not sure there is any legal mechanism to limit NIL, even if they wanted to.

I can’t think of any industry that has a cap on salaries.
Note that NIL is not meant to be a salary. It's literally designed to compensate a student-athlete for the use of their Name, Image, and Likeness. Previously, the universities profited through things like jersey sales, video game sales, etc. Now, the student-athlete gets to receive that compensation, in theory.

The 'cap' is written into the rule i.e. fair market value. The issue is how to determine FMV.

Why does there need to be parity?

It's something that's never really existed in the sport.

When we were good, the top teams were essentially the same top 5 or 6. Same thing today.

The fake the injuries does need to be addressed.

If they cap the NIL then they should cap coaches salaries. In professional sports the guys making the plays are making more money than the ones calling them most of the time.

It is determined by the market - the “M” in FMV.

Capitalism. Neither the govt nor the NCAA have authority to put a cap on the value of someone’s NIL.

Correct. I was just pointing out that NIL is not a salary. You had questioned how salaries can be capped. Because it's not a salary, a salary cap is inapplicable.

To your point, the current Market is the question. Because NIL is so new, we'll have to see how the Market develops.

The quickest and easiest way to make college football more equal, is go down to 75 scholarships and cap the number of analysts the same way they cap the number on-field coaches.

They NCAA has no authority to cap salaries. It will never happen.
