Ok this thread relies on the assumption that since both Sheriffs and Rosier are getting the most throwing attempts and performing the best, either one of them will be the starter this year. Again, we don't know that but let's pretend that happens.

So my question is, who should be our back-up for this year? It appears that Rosier/Sheriffs are a step ahead of Perry. BUT wouldn't it be most useful for the future if Perry (3rd string) would be getting mop-up duty thus allowing him to gain valuable experience?

It's tough to say since either Rosier or Sheriffs sound like they are deserving of more snaps, but I personally think it is quite valuable for Perry to be able to gain some mop-up duty experience in order to prepare for 2018.

What do you guys think?

No. You go with the two best until the third best is in the top 2. Rosier has 2 years left, and Shirreffs has 3. If they are better NOW, you let them get their reps because they might be needed right away. It's not like either one is entering their 5th year and are neck in neck with a true freshman. By all accounts they are both well ahead of Perry, at this time, and deserve playing time. There's also the locker room factor. Guys who have seen other guys work hard for 2-3 years have respect for those guys. They don't like them being crapped on.

Perry's time will come, but nothing good will come from letting a player skip a place in line because he's the teacher's pet.
