For all those, including our wonderful AD, who is trying to compare the 1999 Butch Davis led Hurricanes to this 2014 Al Golden led Hurricanes as a means to justify Golden being retained, I'm here to burst that bubble. There is no remote similarities between the two teams, except that both coaches were in their 4th year. Here are some stats to compare:
In 1999, the Canes finished the season 9-4 against the 24th hardest schedule in the nation that included the 2000 championship game participants, FSU and VT. They went 6-1 in conference w/ their only defeat coming at the hands of #2 VT. They had 2 notable victories against #9 OSU (opening game of season) and #17 GT (in the Gator Bowl). Avg. margin per victory, 32. Avg. margin of defeat, 13 (***take away the blowout lost to VT and the avg. margin would've been 6). They finished 14th in the nation in scoring offense and 12th in scoring defense. They yielded 101/gm on the ground and 187/GM in the air. Finished season as 15th ranked team in the nation.
Compare 2014 this far: our total defense is ranked 22nd but that's misleading due to the "gimme" games we've had. We currently rank 56th against the run, yielding 296/gm. We're 52nd in scoring defense (bend don't break, huh?) We're 54th in scoring offense. 2nd to last in 3rd down efficiency on Offense and bottom 3rd in 3rd down efficiency on Defense. Our avg. margin of defeat is 13 while our avg. margin of victory is 22....while playing against a projected 37th ranked strength of schedule. Not to mention we are now 1-2 in ACC with another sure loss coming against FSU.
The more we visit stats, the more the slurpers have any more excuses to defend or justify Al's tenure here. Come on over to the light; I was once one, but the stats have saved me from the travesty of a regime.
