This Defense could be dominant

I fully agree with the depth. To make a real run you need at least 8 playable DT’s and Miami currently has only 6 DT’s on the roster with two of them being redshirt freshman Daylen Russell (most here thinks he is a G5 level player) and true freshman Donta Simpson.

Although I am confident in the top four of Blay, Moten, Scoot, & Jones, I also believe Simpson can be very good in a limited role, but to your point this DT depth is scary. Miami desperately needs two of the DE’s to be versatile enough to play 20-30 snaps or consider converting 1 or 2 of the offensive lineman to DT, like Michigan did in 2023 to help them win the National Championship.
That’s probably something they really need to look into, 4 DTs with only 3 having real college in game experience. Jones, Russell, Simpson as depth, ain’t gonna cut it especially if u have injuries. Wish they were also able to get CJ Clark type level player to add to that room.

UM went from #39 to #1 in scoring offense from 2023-2024.

It’s not that big of a stretch to think we can improve 38 spots or more in scoring defense this year.

Yes, Cam was special, but without Martinez, the OLine, Restrepo and Horton, it would not have been a #1 offense.

Improvement at DC and most important secondary, which will take the pressure off of the DLine could be a major improvement.
Bain returning to 2023 Bain with a LB’er stepping up and a competent secondary could make this a top 25 defense, which might be all we need to make a run in the playoffs.

We will be a more complete team in 2025 for sure. A competent DC, deeper more mature DL, young LBs hopefully ready to take the next step, and a significantly better Secondary.

That plus a lot of key guys who must show out this year for NFL aspirations.

I’m feeling good as long as we lean on our running game more. We’ve got too many good RBs to not utilize them to control the clock, give the D some rest, and keep Beck from hero ball situations.

I’ll gladly give up the nail biter 45-41 W for a 31-13 W.

Improved D and running game. Get it done, Mario.

Op updated. I’m convinced that this will be a top 10-15 defense this season.

To do that, one of Scott, Blay, Moten needs to be more than just gap fill at the NT position, has to make TFLs and push the pocket. To me that’s the biggest potential weakness still. Hope it’s Scott not convinced it will be Blay. Moten has steadily improved but I don’t think he has plus quickness or bend so don’t think he can take that big of a step this year either.

This defense is designed for TFLs. Blay lived in the backfield last season (10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks), that’s why he was 1st team All Conference USA and an All American . Also getting up field is Moten and Scott’s game.

Just like when Many Diaz took over RJ McIntosh and Kendrick Norton feasted and went on to get drafted.

I have full confidence that Scott will look like the 5 star that he is in this defense. The only thing that can stop him is his play strength (According to D Lew, he came in only benching 225. Hopefully he has made big strides in that department)

Really appreciate the work you’re putting into these posts!

Top 10-15 D is ambitious, but I like Heatherman. (Does the dude ever blink??) Hope you’re right!

He turned Minnesota into a top 5 defense with a group of 3 stars and one blue chip true freshman. You telling me he can’t do something like that with Miami talent and a weaker schedule

Minnesota had a top 10 defense while being 92nd in TFL. I don't think we need to live in the backfield for this defense to succeed and frankly i'm glad.

ND opener will tell us alot.
I honestly don’t think so. ND is too one dimensional, get a few early stops and go up by 14, that game is over. Miami isn’t small and slow anymore, you got 6-2 200 Lucas running 10.5 and 6-0 195 Scott running 10.7 on the field at the same time. I get it Jeremiyah Love is a very talented player, but he was stopped a lot last season.

Louisville and Clemson (in the championship) will be the test.

We do this with every coordinator we get lol..I do think the secondary will be elite. I don’t see enough game changers in the front 7 to say elite but we really just need to dominate acc play
