Thin line between success and failure

For the guys claiming it's a Folden season, the main difference I saw was that Rick managed to keep the team together and invested after 4 straight losses. Folden teams died down the stretch. This team played its best ball down the stretch.

This team surpassed my expectations.. I actually thought we'd lose 5 straight, starting with free shoes.. there were no "should have won" games in those loses.. Being more talented doesn't mean an automatic win and 2 of those loses was Miami more "talented" than the opponent according to recruiting services.. Richt did ok, he had some sketchy to bad moments, needs to do better (duh)

When looking at this season you can't call it a success because of that dreadful 4 game stretch in October. The failure seems so profound because of that devastating stretch of losses to teams that weren't really better than us.

Not making any excuses or pumping sunshine. This 4 game win streak actually makes the failures that much more bitter. This 4 game winning streak shows what we were capable of during that losing streak had we abandoned the heavy reliance on that ****** RPO system and made subtle tweaks to the OL earlier like getting an injured and physically overmatched Linder out of the lineup quicker. We waited too **** long to make those two subtle moves, and that's likely what cost us the Coastal. That poor kid Linder got absolutely brutalized by that ND DT Jones, but that just shined a brighter light on what was happening to him all season.

That stretch and being out of the Coastal race so early left most of us with such a bad taste in our mouths that the season felt like a ****.

Before the season, I said Rick and the season would be a fail if we didn't win the Coastal and 10 games. As it has played out, we've got a shot to win 9 and lost the Coastal by 1 game. So had we won a single additional Coastal game the season would have been a success at least to me. That's a razor thin line. It's not like we won 5 games and totally sprayed ***** everywhere. We missed our legit goals by 1 game, and a couple of those games came down to a play or two.

Bright side is Rick showed the willingness to dump that RPO **** that Kaaya looked so uncomfortable running. Defense also looks like it can be at least an ACC Championship defense. I don't think we're as overwhelming defensively as a team like Clemson can be. But we have a chance to get there. We really need to add at least one plug and play JUCO CB and a solid grad transfer CB because it would be a mortal sin to waste that front 7 next year with a horse **** CB play.

Totally agree! another solid recruiting class bring back those juniors who are talking Nfl and we should be ready big time.

and he made adjustments! kids fought because this staff put them, sans the kick return guys, in positions to make serious plays!

Which is probably why Richt moved from Rix back to Rick status???

IMO we should've won 3 of the 4 we lost. VT was the 3rd game in 12 days and we were missing a **** ton on defense.

Overall I like the direction we are headed but those 3 losses are tough to stomach. The what could a been if we even win 1 of those is maddening.

Pretty much correct. Next year he needs to put the wins on the board and at the very least win the Coastal Division. Moral victories only count for 1 year.

Starting year 2 no more blaming Golden.

Richt is a corch. Season was a disaster. We beat a 4-8 Duke team to make us feel better. Any team with a pulse beat Richt and made him look like a fool.

You are a fan of a certain corch who went 0-2 vs ECU when he was coach at Miami, and could not win a NC with a 2000 team that was even more talented than 2001. Are you going to abandon Miami for FIU? This corch has been searching his mailbox for either Power 5 job offers or a 2001 NC ring, but none have appeared in his mailbox.

We weren't going to go 11-1 this year, so if we had won 3 out of those 4, then we would have lost to Pitt or NCSU. It's just the way this stuff goes.

When you're not an 11-1 team you usually find a way to level out to where you probably should be, which is about 9-3 or 10-2 at the absolute best.

I don't give a fck about moral victories. Never have.

In the end, Rick failed. The point of the post was to discuss just how razor thin that margin between failure and success is. In our case, it was likely a play or two that could have got us the Coastal and 10 total wins.

As heartwarming of a feeling these last four games gave us, this season is ultimately no different than a Golden led season in that we didn't accomplish our manageable goal of winning the Coastal and our record did not reflect our talent.

A statistic I took away that encapsulates our season is the difference in average PPG by the offense between the first five games against a P5 opponent compared to our last four opponents. The difference is a staggering 21 POINT DIFFERENCE.

Richt took way too long to realize what type of QB he had with Kaaya and it's ultimately what cost us a chance at the coastal. People on here realized how abysmal we looked as early as the GT game and yet it took Richt another 4 games to make an adjustment. IDGAF that our last four opponents were easier, we made UNC and Notre Dame look like world beaters, and FSU and VT were there for the taking and we never even tested them. I have no doubt in my mind that if Richt failed to make the adjustments on offense we would've continued to struggle to reach that 21 point total that eluded us in the first half of the season.

Richt is unnecessarily making play calling harder on himself. If he insists on play calling, so be it, but if the university is determined on winning and willing to spend the cash, why are we settling for an OC and a QB coach that couldn't get the same jobs in any other school in the country? Spend the ******* money and lets get a proper coaching staff not filled with yes men that take A MONTH to realize our faults on offense.

to me 'Darktober' taints this season, and many understood what offensive system needed to be run to maximize the current personnel. I think UM could have easily won another game or two if the proper adjustments in philosophy were made as Chise noted.

On the flipside, I think this squad really competed well throughout the season, outside the Vatech game they never capitulated. Also love the freshman class and cant wait to see them get better and better.

And lastly, I think a great foundation has been laid defensively with the future with Manny Diaz leading the way.

I agree Richt didn't do the greatest job of changing his system to fit Golden's players, but 1st year coaches rarely seem to do a great job of that.

This was an acceptable performance for year 1 but starting next year he needs to do better than 8-4.

I don't see this massive talent disparity everyone harps on about.

We have quite a few good starters. We don't have anyone behind a lot of them though.

Who do we have behind Elder? Who do we have behind Richards and Coley? We're starting Jenkins and Carter at S.

These are key positions that we're paper thin at.

And yet our defense managed to improve from 28 PPG allowed to 18 PPG allowed. Our biggest shortcomings talent-wise came on the defensive side and yet Diaz was able to defy Golden and the Richt apologists by proving Miami has enough talent to hold down coastal opponents.

So why, on an offense with a Junior QB, a solid Senior receiver, a freshman phenom WR, a freak of nature for a TE, and three solid RB's did we only see marginal improvements? And why was there such a night and day difference for the offense when comparing first half of the season to second half of the season?

If your answer is not Richt dropped the ball, then stop going to games and cut your cable because you obviously can't recognize what you see and your opinion is worthless.

Not too many teams we played had weapons equal to Coley, Richards, Njoku. FSU and maybe UNC.
