The Work 3-10

I find it funny sometimes when "fans" say a player is not as good as they thought. How good are you in football??? I bet you $1000 these players are at least 5 times better than you at football.......

WTF? The high level recruits are infinitely better than the washed-up and never-were posters on a recruiting board. But so what? They are commenting on the recruits talent as compared to other D1 recruits, in terms of how they project to help the team the posters root for.

do you think it's "funny" when people discuss the relative talent of professional athletes or Olympic athletes? If so, then what's the point of having sports message boards, particularly ones related to recruiting?

Maybe this should be its own thread, but I think the 7 on 7 game is different enough that I'd be very careful with projections based on what is seen in that setting. I'm interested to hear from some of the coaches on here. I've played live (regular) and 7 on 7 flag and the approach is almost 100% different. Would like for Hollyhood or the like to throw a perspective on how this positively or negatively affects their players.

You are right this is much different and I am one that thinks too much evaluation goes into some of the players as opposed to a regular game. 7 on 7 can make an average QB or WR look great when really that's not the case. I'm not trying to pick on any player but there is one in the 2015 class who physically has all the tools but doesn't have much heart so in 7 on 7 he looks like a beast because he knows he's not going to get hit but in a real game he keeps his head on a swivel at all times which takes away from his pass catching. As far as QBs just the fact of knowing there is no rush changes a lot of their thinking and for those that are afraid of staying in the pocket it gives coaches a false sense of how the QB actually is.

7 on 7 does have positives and negatives for every player and from talking with a bunch of college coaches they tend to take it for what it's worth and not a final say on whether a kid can play for them or not.

I am not a huge fan of 7 on 7 either. Nor am I a huge fan of basing someones talents off of a 7 on 7 tryout either. The problem is that evaluations are made and guys go up or down a recruiting services board based on this stuff.

Case in point, Pete basically has moved Tyrek Cole down his board based on what he did in shirts and shorts when before he basically labeled him a 5 star stud in real game action. Dont understand that at all. How many "Greentree All Americans" have we had over the years only for them to suck a$$ when it was time to put the pads on in game action?

I dont mind using 7 on 7 to get a good read on what a kids true height/weight/speed/athleticism is. But thats where I end it. **** we offered Ryan Mayes because of what he did in a camp and Im not a fan of his at all. Hope the kid proves me wrong.

What does this have to do with anything? If you go to a super expensive restaurant and the food is good but not great, are you ok with it b/c it's better than you can cook? If you test drive a $100K car and it drives well, but not what you would expect for the price, are you ok with it b/c it's faster than your car? Posters on here aren't saying they are better than the recruits/players (except maybe in the weight room results threads), most of the time they are not even saying the recruit sucks, they are just saying that a player was different than they originally thought (sometimes in that the recruit is better than thought originally). As someone else said, what's the point of being on a recruiting message board if you can't discuss things like that.

Agree with you about being very careful in using these to judge players. I played in them all throughout HS and even helped put together one at Valdosta State. It's just a different type of deal.

They are putting things in place now to help it simulate games more and more (like giving a QB 4 seconds to throw before being sacked, allowing more coverages, etc.) but its still tricky. Our coach used to say that around this time of year all the skilled superstars show up LOL. DB's can't be as physical, linebackers and safety types are almost completely neutralized, and the offense holds a huge advantage. Especially in those leagues where street ball is allowed and a QB has 7-8 seconds back there to just let guys run around and get open.

It's ridiculous how so many kids get ridiculed on message boards by some of the anonymous individuals. That's what I don't like..... I don't just take that stance with fans it's the people who do it the most at websites like 247 and rivals that ridicule players as well when they can't even play football at a high level. It irks me.

This has literally nothing to do with being a good talent evaluator. Guys in the NFL are coached by guys who couldn't hold their jock strap. You can say the same for most college coaches. Does that mean they should stop? Does it make their opinion null and void? No. If you spend enough time around the game, whether you're good at it or not, you pick up on things that translate to the next level. There are common denominators in kids at this level that give them a chance to succeed at the next level. Being good at football doesn't make you a good evaluator, coach, GM, etc.

Edit: Shogun beat me to it

Please show me where a kid is getting ridiculed in this thread. I don't see anything in the this thread that is even mean spirited. The worst thing someone has said is that someone was overrated, not that they were bad, but that they were not as good as a lot of people seem to think. Do we have to say that every kid playing football is now a 5 star recruit and the greatest player of all time? I can understand being frustrated when the board attacks someone for picking another school by saying they suck or 'f them', but that is not going on in this thread.

" Cavin is in a similar situation where he is older than his 2016 classification and we have been told that his transcripts are even worse off that Calvin’s at this point."

These schools down here man.......

How about the parents/guardians...

How about the kids themselves?

It starts with the parents/guardians.

If they don't care and/or are not involved, then these kids won't put forth the effort that is needed.

Most of the issue is on the parents. They expect the schools to raise their children and do little to nothing to reinforce education at home. IMO this is the biggest issue facing urban educators in South Florida and around the country. It's a perpeetual cycle of poverty and lack of education and job training that leads to future generations coming up uneducated and not ready for higher education.

Excellent and well-reasoned. I also hate it when people say the food they order was not as good as they thought it would be. I bet $1000000000 it tastes better than them. Or how about jerks who don't like a movie they paid $12 to see? Really sets me off.

I had parents like that but luckily i didnt need the help and I had the passion to get the work done. Some kids tbh dont like school and need to be pushed with their work and others just ned help so the parents should be in their *** and helping their kids every way that thehy can

Happy to hear you were able to make it on your own, and totally agree that many kids need that 1 adult in their life to be on them and pushing them to make the right choices regarding their futures. Unfortunately a lot of those parents and adults never made it through HS either.

I'm including the ones in the past like the joe brown thread where he was scrutinized. There is a lot of this that go on in message boards

I'm a teacher and watch so many families send their kids to school and expect us to do everything for them. We wash their clothes, give them toothbrushes, and deoderant. The families don't want to be bothered by the school and often times don't know how to do their kids HW so they can't help.

A lot of these kids see their parents feed off the system for years and see that their parents never have to work and they figure that's the easy way to go.

Hopefully kids like the Ridleys realize the opportunities football can bring them as well as the free education if they can get serious about things for the next 18 months.

Da’Vante Phillips is truly a beast, FSU got them a good one. looks like Flanagan is State Champs or Bust with all that Talent they have.

Yupp! Pat Riley and Phil Jackson were the best to ever play their positions!
