He might be but our punt return issues were as bad as I've ever seen in the 30ish years I've watched college football. We gave up a kick return for td. If we had a decent punt returner I doubt anyone would be complaining about patke

True but it's not like for lack of effort... He tried a ton of different returners. We just never really had anyone with secure enough hands. This was the first season we ever had an issue with it

Yeah it was and we did try a bunch of guys. I'm just saying if we weren't an epic failure at punt return people on here wouldn't have anything bad to say about him. The coach has to be somewhat responsible when no one can catch a punt. It's unheard of

On point how?

Tell me how good the special teams has been without mentioning Jose B, who was a Groza finalist before coming to Miami. What about our special teams unit has been "on point?"

So can an “analyst” do everything a coach can do besides recruit? Can they be at practice? If so how do we know that secretly Shoop won’t be calling plays?
 
Special teams were poor (not even average) before Hedley and Borregales arrived. Muffed punts. No decent returns either on Punts or KO. Kick coverage average at best. All of it was not even close to the Miami standard (light years from it). We've had returners that range from the GOAT in CFB and the NFL like Hester to the very good (PBuch, Kevin Williams and many others). We used to suffocate teams on kick coverage & knock some heads off (Armstead, Sean Taylor and many more great ST players). What Patke's put out there has been awful by comparison.

He's done a decent job with strikers but ST has been poor (very poor by Miami standards). It's a critical area that should never be overlooked. It affords both the Offense and the Defense a major advantage (in terms of field position, momentum etc) when Special Teams are exceptional. It's also very deflating for opponents when they are frustrated at every turn (start with poor field position, fumble the ball, pinned into corners, give up super fast scores etc).

Hedley and Borregales deserve major props. They've both delivered at an elite level. The rest of our special teams effort has a looong way to catch up. It needs to be made a priority going forward.

Patke just seems like a wasted spot. While I don’t think he’s done much to hurt this team I also don’t think he brings much to the table. Gil improved last year and obviously kicking and punting game was elite (not sure he should take credit for that) but he can’t recruit sooo...he’s kinda just....there.

I can live with that after all the moves Manny made. If the biggest thing we have to complain about next year is having a poor punt return team then we’re in good shape.

Boregalles was a 72% FG kicker before he arrived here... He became a 90% kicker here. Hedley averaged 38 yards a punt before he got to UM. He's now up to 47.
 
I’m not convinced this the opening day staff. fwiw I guess we’ll all wait and find out together. Patake stays lol before someone makes the wrong assumption.
