I think to a large extent the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies to our athletic program's problems. Especially when you compare coaching salaries and the university's investments in equipment and facilities. It's not that our facilities are bad, it's more that they're just not on the same level as the top competitors. Couple that with poor hiring decisions for coaching staff and a limited pool of top notch coaches willing to coach here (here salary does come into play), you get what we've got. Unless the U makes some major commitments in terms of money and support for the program, or we get really lucky with an unknown or just starting out coach, I just don't see a lot of improvements happening to our lack of success on the field.
Ive been a fan fan and supporter of the U since my freshman year there in 1965, and I've seen many high and low points in the program. Things can turn around but not without some real effort and support from the president on down. Regardless, I'll always pull for my Canes.
