This wasn’t on Dawson play calling or Mario being conservative. The offense was good and Beck was great.

As great as our defense and heatherman are, today was more about the defense. And a lot of that probably has to do with blay, Scott, Thomas, oj etc being out.
Mario and Dawson were aggressive and trying to put up points. If our fate wasn’t riding on the point differential, we’d be talking about how good of a win it was, how good Dawson and Beck were and how great our backups played on defense with key starters out. Your takes suck

Great win on the road but the overall playcalling drastically changed in the 2nd half. Far more condensed. Far more running to short side or running plays to the short side. The typical Mario cristobal refusal to put our athletes in plus situations in space was on full display after touchdown #1 in 2nd half.

We have witnessed it all year. It has hurt us all year in games that should have been blowouts… which none have been, today was no different.

I say all that to say winning a game in November on the road by 17 is a blessing. But should have and could have been more if the 1st half offensive mindset carried over all 4 quarters

I keep seeing the take that the game was never in doubt. I would hope not. VT has 3 wins

I also hear the take that our offense played fine……against a 3 win team.

What I think some don’t understand is we won 34-17 against a 3-8 team. We won 34-17 knowing we needed to blow them out. Knowing that we played with very little urgency.

Dawson and Mario are to blame. Their inability to evolve is to blame. Them doing the same things, that don’t seem to work are to blame.

We’re in week 13 and they have yet to come to the realization that playing to your opponents pace, especially a 3 win team, does you no benefit. We do that against 2 and 3 win teams and we win by 2+ scores. We do that against teams with a pulse and we’re in a dog fight that we have a habit of losing.

So yeah, they do hold blame. Whether it’s the roster construction that limits their ability to play with pace, or whether it’s an inability to sequence plays quickly it’s a big issue.

Which plays? Scheme was the same. Four drives with 2 TDs. Other drive screwed up by a horrible snap and the fourth was screwed up by a hold by our oline.

Why so few possessions (practically always)? Wouldn't having more talent cause you to want more possessions?

The standard we're looking at is a playoff contender/berth. Bottom line - this offense doesn't score enough points. We've played several bad defenses and pretty consistently have come in under the bar. And scored in the 20's a handful of times, avoiding another during garbage time today. Sum doesn't equal the parts, imo.

Unfair to call it bro. ball? How 'bout get a lead, play bro. ball? Or start slowly, and tack on the style points against crap defenses? Or clench your cheeks in a close one?

We are what our record says - top 10-15, enabled by a coach who can really acquire talent, then ****es away the advantage on Saturday.

It’s not about the “efficiency” of the offense. It’s the mentality they have that limits opportunities. When you have a sizable advantage you want as many chances as you can get. VT is a 3 win, bad team. But instead of playing with urgency like we want to beat the brakes off them we get into a slow paced slug fest with a seriously inferior team.

I’ll give you an example. Late in the first half we were winning by 10 or maybe 13. VT had the ball and they were driving to make it a 1 score game going into half. A game that we had dominated up to that point. Why would it be a 1 score game if they were able to convert? Because we only had 4 possessions in the entire 1st half. Again, VT is a bad team yet they were one bad play away from trailing at the half by 6 and getting the ball in the second half. That’s how we lose to the GTs, SMUs, and LVilles of the world. Decent teams but teams we should beat easily.

the pace that they play with is by design. So yes that is on Mario and the staff.

We scored on all but 2 drives and 1 of those 2 was because of a botched snap. So we didn’t score on 1 drive? Stop it. That’s not play calling on Dawson or Mario. 1 drive? That sounds ridiculous
Pace of play my man we should be going up tempo getting more plays off having more possessions. It’s a joke.
It’s such ****** strategy. I don’t know how you can defend it.

Of course the scheme was the same. But the want to get creative and put our players in space was non existent in the 2nd half. The feel for the game Dawson shows when the offense is wide open completely disappears with a lead. Today that was on display. Blame whomever you want but we refuse to spread teams out with a comfortable lead. It’s condensed sets and running to the short side of field which hurts our ability for explosive plays
