We struggled in certain areas vs LSU for sure (and I think the numbers don't show all our struggle in that game, which may have been our worst), but they still ended up with 296 total yards on 65 plays and were 3/16 on 3rd downs.
In what world did UNC gash us? They got 329 yards on 75 plays and were 2/13 on 3rd down. Our defense got 3 scores.
GT got 303 total yards. They moved the ball a bit. The only teams to hold them to less yards? Clemson and Georgia.
I wish our fans would insert a little context into their perspectives. Is this an old school, "best of the best" defense? Prob not. Remember, this is modern football, too. We're not mashing up against I-Form anymore. Is it a really good one that produced with their backs against the wall the entire year? It is by the eye test, by almost every single category and when you compare against opponents.
Just completely not true.
LSU - 140 yds passing and 156 Rushing
UNC- 114 passing and 215 Rushing. Scored 10 points.
GT- avg 390 yds/ game and we held them to around 300. And that was the Defense's worst performance of the year.
I thought this was the second worst game for the defense this year. They allowed 5 yards/play, but faced a ridiculous 83 plays despite stopping BC on 3rd down 66% of the time (BC was 6-18 on conversions). For context from my notes (on re-watch, since I watched that ****** game from their cold upperdeck), BC pulled out multiple trick plays early on. We, of course, had multiple brutal turnovers and our offense was stagnant (305 total yards) most of the night. It was a crap game through and through. That was a fun walk away from their stadium/campus.BC not NC
Good suggestion in Bedenbaugh. I wouldn't hire him as OC but would love to have him as OL coach. If we actually hire a legit OC Bedenbaugh could continue learning from him and could take over eventually.Or there are coaches who come off successful coaching trees who are looking for their first real opportunity. Bill Bedenbaugh at Oklahoma is one of the best OL coaches, is the co-offensive coordinator from the Mike Leach tree, but learned a more run oriented Air Raid from Lincoln Riley. Bedenbaugh wants to be a full time OC and call plays. He makes 600k per year. Bedenbaugh could replace Searles, help with recruitment of big midwest kids, and run an improved Air Raid. Since he would be a 1st time OC, Rick might be less threatened by him.
Agree 1000% Excellent assessment. You should post more.Manny was a great hire for the Canes. We're back to playing an aggressive brand of defense that results in significant TFLs and turnovers. It utilizes the athleticism & speed of So Fla athletes perfectly and gives them a chance to rack up major stats (which should be a major draw in recruiting). Manny has been successful at creating pressure & turnovers without giving up many explosive plays (which is really hard to do). He deserves an "A" for the season.
We have a real identity on Defense and it is consistent with the blueprint that was so successful in the past.
With additional quality depth at DT, DB and LB, this defense would have been really nasty. Greater production on Offense and consistent punting would have helped further. With an above-average offense, we would have won the Coastal. With a strong offense, we would have been competitive in the ACC Championship game and been in the national picture.
I actually think he would be a great hire as HC for the Canes (when CMR leaves). If he was paired with the right OC, we would be nasty.
Man I love these people that never post anything and go around hitting dislike or dumb or disagree. Why don't they post instead and entertain us.
great post. it is absolutely necessary today to have an offense that can get yardage in big chunks and score a bushel of points.Diaz kept his unit from quitting, fielded a top 5 defense despite no help from the offense. In UM's 5 losses they failed to score 20 points 4 times.
I learned the word “invalid” on that day.I’ll never forget the meltdown GoldenShowers/FullyERicht had the day Manny was hired.
I was legitimately concerned for his well being.
But but.....Richt said we don't need explosive plays.great post. it is absolutely necessary today to have an offense that can get yardage in big chunks and score a bushel of points.
Good suggestion in Bedenbaugh. I wouldn't hire him as OC but would love to have him as OL coach. If we actually hire a legit OC Bedenbaugh could continue learning from him and could take over eventually.
As far as Richt being less threatened........***** him! If he had done his job and performed at a level equal to his pay then he wouldn't have to worry about being threatened.
Not trying to argue but what exactly does all this baggage Briles has consist of exactly? Is it because he happened to be on his dad's staff when the whole rape scandal went down at Baylor? Is there any evidence that Kendall committed any wrongdoing? Is there any reason to believe Kendall Briles had anything to do with any of that? I don't think so. I can see Art having baggage but Kendall? No way. FIU and Houston have had no problem hiring him. I honestly think this whole 7 degrees of baggage thing is way out of control.I'd roll the dice on him as a playcalling OC, on a 2 year deal. The hire takes care of the OL problems and the Riley Air Raid is an evolution of the Leach Air Raid, and is precisely what Miami needs. Briles has far too much baggage, so no chance he'll get signed. I like Yost, but I suspect he and Rick would have a personality conflict.
Bedenbaugh seems to be a better fit personality wise. He'd also be affordable and leave enough $$$ leftover to hire a bunch of analysts.
