The O deserves the hits it’s taking, but why did the D suck so hard?

My theory is that the Defense was trying to do too much yesterday.

Our offense put us behind immediately and gave MTSU short fields. Then we were doing anything offensively.

Our defense then started playing a lot cover zero and bump to create 3 and outs and turnovers.

Then, talent level at CB is low. We weren't able to break up a single bomb. Thats a player issue not scheme imo. The scheme was trying to create opportunities.

This is accurate. When coming from behind such a large deficit it is necessary to stop the run, which we were struggling to do with our front 7 because MTSU was winning the LOS. So we bring up everyone and rely on our big but slow corners to jam the receivers and our d-line to get pressure. If those two happen our coverage works. When they don’t we are left open to the deep ball. Obviously it didn’t work.

Our defense sucks
I’ve never seen a team that can’t defend a go route if our dline doesn’t get pressure
Wrs can simply just run past our two outside cbs
Ivey and Stevenson are slow as ****
That alone should tell you how bad our talent level truly is
U think any of the top teams have two staring cbs that can’t keep up in foot race to that track team midd tenn state puts out
Even southern miss was blowing by ppl
If jimbo wasn’t shook and actually called a go route I bet they would have just ran by the cb
It’s laughably bad

Would it be weird if I commission the Publix bakery into making a sheet cake celebrating the end of the Ivey era? Thinking about superimpose the image where he is laying on the ground like Pau Gasol onto the top of the cake.

Terrible coaching by Steele. We couldn't come back because we couldn't stop fkn mtsu from scoring. Think about that for a second. We got out coached, schemed, and played by mtsu!!??!!
They have an excellent head coach.
Wish we had offered back in '05.
Landscape would be totally different..

The secondary is awfulllllllllll outside of Kitchens. They don’t communicate and are easily fooled. They aren’t a complete unit just a bunch of individuals. It’s like the CBs are getting coached one way and the Safeties are getting taught something different.

The LBs aren’t consistent and the guys behind them aren’t physically ready yet I guess
Same issue as last year I thought these new portal guys / coaches were going to fix that?

Definitely out coached. What I saw was MTSU keying on the mismatches and making the most of those opportunities. They really exposed our slow corners one on one. I know, we already know that. They really didn't do that much in the ground game. Only rushed for 99 yards on 36 carries for 2.8 yds per carry.
I think half of the 99 yards was in the 4th qtr when our guys had just given up. That's not terrible overall run D, but I guess MTSU didn't have to run when they were picking apart the secondary.

Their coaches obviously put in work during the week and studied film. They saw enough of the 1st 3 games to know the right play for our formation. We had no answer or adjustments. Don't know if our coaches overlooked MTSU or were just lazy, but MTSU was 100% more prepared.

LB position is a zero. Tons of problems in the secondary other than Kinchens (best defensive player by a mile).
I want to know where Chase Smith is. Play him, Caleb Johnson, and Wesley. Stick Flagg and Steed on the bench for good. Keontra Smith sucks too but he isn’t on Flagg and Steed’s level.

I thought we had Steele and Strong and the former UGA DB coach and Jason Taylor…

Why was the D so dreadful?
COT damnit if I know how da **** MTSU recievers out running our DBs yeah Ivey I know damnit mane somebody bring me a beer

Don't overthink this we flat out sucked

Well when you trot 11, 8, 17, 0, 7, 23 out there all the time you are going to have those results.
I agree with this. At this point, I rather see Harris, Kelly, Chase, Wes, Graves, etc making youthful mistakes that watching Ivy get burned or flagg reacting late to a play. we have young talent, Mario knows how to develop but they need to be playing. I always said we are two more classes away, 23 and 24 have to be strong. I really like some of the 22 kids but it wasn't a super deep class.

I am going to come to Steed's defense on something that I simply can't let go from a coaching perspective: on one play, he was split out wide in coverage. Maybe it was due to injuries in our defensive backfield, but otherwise, it is unconscionable that one could send an oft-injured linebacker into a cornerback position. Not cool.

Going to have to hit the portal hard again. I’ve been saying this too that we need a couple good classes but seeing yesterday was absolutely pitiful and inexcusable from a staff like this.

Yep I’m with you there. I’m just tired of him missing tackles and usually out of position. And he’s really slow.

Because arrogance. We don’t have good corners outside of Stevenson. Ivey was just getting some confidence and 23 plays in the slot. Outside of them….?

Also, enough offensive ineptitude will lead to other collapses.
