The Night Richt Lost the Fanbase... and the Team

I stopped expecting anything positive from this program since the Pitt loss. We've seen this same song and dance with Coker-Shannon-Golden and now Richt. This once feared programs has been turned to trash.

No. It was to UVA this year. Last year we went 10-3 and won coastal. Stop acting like that wasn't progress.

He lost everyone against UVA this year. I didn't even watch BC game. A first for me in roughly 20 years.

Agree with most of what you said but we don't know the whole story behind Richt and Perry. This is more than x's and o's in my opinion and there is enough evidence with the prior suspension and Perry's social media " middle finger " after the Virginia game.

True. I do account for that a few times in my post, or at least attempt to. Richt knows more of the inner workings than any of us. But what is abundantly visible and doesn't require insider access to know is what Malik, and this offense (and team) under Malik, is not: competitive. Of course, the problems are far more systemic than Malik, but that's one variable that can be changed immediately. If Perry is that much of a knucklehead that Richt simply cannot trust him (which means Perry is guaranteed to transfer), then turn things over to JW. What good is a saved redshirt when chaos and failure swirls around us? Deal with whatever growing pains that come but that surely is better than simply losing with a senior who doesn't inspire the team, doesn't show the ability for growth, and wouldn't be here next year anyway.

The signs were there in 2016 with bad losses to UNC, VT, maybe FSU. Lightbulb went on during that 4 game losing streak. Some people knew before he was hired. Guy is a fraud.

This. Don't forget a sickening loss to a 4-8 ND, where Richts terrible playcalling and coaching was open and obvious.

Richt shut down after a big first half lead vs FSU. A typical Richt choke and puke , plus a early glimpse at his awful special teams.

The UNC game was classic Richt. Awful special teams, Canes come out unprepared, lethargic and uninterested , and his playcalling and coaching graded out at "F".

He outdid himself next at VT, introducing his penchant of following a terrible game with a even worse performance.

If not for a streak of lucky wins over inferior teams who outplayed us, 2017 could have been a 6-5 season or worse, and we saw zero improvements to his playcalling, or any other element. 2018, and it's exactly the same. Zero improvement by Richt or the program.

He lost me the night he hired HIS SON. I knew it was over.

Agreed. Honestly, I feel Richt took this job, not b/c he felt he could win here or wanted to come back, but b/c we were the only chumps willing to concede to allowing his family run shop w him.

Richt been saw the sunset those last couple years at UGA. He may have been pumped when he first got here, but after hearing all the scrutiny and going through the grind....I don’t think he’s cut out for it anymore. He doesn’t look well, like fa real. He looks lost, in a daze, and just not feeling the coaching scene.

Only one team has the juice right now: Alabama. Clemson looks good in a weak ACC schedule. Notre Dame is ok until it faces real competition. Ohio State has its stumbles, but still commands semi-pro status. The rest of the Big 10 is mediocre. Penn State and Michigan used to be powerhouses, but are second tier today. Look at all the top 25 teams that lost today. West Virginia keeps winning, but does anyone believe they are championship caliber? Texas, Oklahoma - blah. Pac 10 is nothing. College football right now is not very competitive. Except for the well funded teams, everything else is a sideshow. The 4-game playoff proves it. All of the other bowl games are irrelevant, just fluff to bring in more money.

UM needs an offensive assistant coach and a better offensive line. Also needs depth, plenty of depth. Needs millionaire donors and quiet bagmen to satisfy those needs. Let's face it. Alabama, Ohio State, and occasional guest appearances by lucky teams such as Notre Dame and Oregon are the essence of college elite play today. Teams like UM, USC, Syracuse, and TCU are playing for alumni and local pride, but not for national championships. Let's just be prideful that a good number of Canes end up in the NFL. Better yet if they have a decent college education to go along with it.

I got caught up in the enthusiasm of recreating Cane Championships. But after the last two games, I know that everything that occurred in the last two years was a matter of luck. Yeah, UVA and BC beat UM. Are they really going anywhere? The gin and tonics are affecting my post. Basically, I am saying that college football is hard to take seriously. Only the NFL has the parity and total quality of players that gives every team athletic integrity from starter to practice squad. In the college game, it is 3-5 teams that are for real with starters and backups that consistently win; the rest are developmental squads that allow a portion of the talented high-school players to train and showcase their skills for the NFL. (Think Triple A, Double A, and Single A in baseball - that's where the majority of college teams are today.). Right now, UM is Double A at best, but we can at least take pride in the players who make it in the NFL.

I remember Coach Panick Button say in an interview in his first year here that his play calling was rusty and that he needed some time to sharpen up. Then and even now, he was delusional. The game passed him bye due to his stiffness, know it all and control it all mindset. He can be a Saban only if he hands off, hires competent coaches, and manages things. Afterall, was Jimmy not a manager?

Correct. It really doesn't matter what's going on behind the scenes with Perry or any of the qbs. He's coaching these guys. He's recruiting them. No matter how you slice it, the bottom line is that Richt has bungled the QB situation as badly as possible.

He didn’t use the bye week to prepare for
BC. He used it to prepare for other teams down the road on the schedule...I assume GT amongst others. So per TB last week, one problem may be our playbook is too much for them...if that’s the case, then preparing for multiple teams at once sounds like a brilliant plan.

Yeah think by now everybody understands the QB problems and development.

But what is eqaully important - not second fiddle to it, EQUALLY is O-Line, O-Line, O-Line.

In spring they were horrible, then they started feeding us the Kool Aid. Fall, we were told they were better, season we were told new combinations would help, and they were getting better.

O-Lines aren't something that change overnight. You can either run block and pass protect well enough, or excell at one more than the other, its not a position that changes drastically during a season. Art Keho used to be a god as an O-line coach, his last stint here, not so much.

This program desperatley needs to find someone who can recruit, coach and develop an O-line, they can help hide deficiencies in a QB, particuarly if you ACTUALLY HAVE a RUNNING GAME. Maiami has had great backs, but hasn't had a consitent running game in years. You can have all the talent in the world and you can lose with even an average O-Line. Just look at the Top three programs - it is where they start.

Its the hardest position to recruit and why a decade ago they started paying LTs in the NFL WR type money - the LT is involved in every play, the WR maybe 5-8 per game.

It's why the Gators had a chance to win yesterday had they not turned the ball over 3-times. That O-line was dominating Georgia early

Do some of you know something about JW that I dont. No one has seen him play yet he is the savior. He could be worse than Rosier for all we know. Heck he played 5 minutes from my house yet I hadnt heard of him until our QB commit bailed and we got him at last minute.

Once again @SmokeyRone Spitting Facts....Nothing like Old School Grassy keeping it 100% real....

But it was inspired hustle from our redshirt freshman quarterback that made it happen
Solid post. Agree with you. Just one disagreement and that is the quote above. It wasnt Perry's play that made that win happen, it was the D holding FSU to 45yds in the second half. Our offense hasn't looked good no matter who has been under center. Thats not a jab at perry nor a support of rosier, its simply the reality.

When we lost to Pittsburgh last season, I was shocked. We all were. But I wasn't shocked by Malik's bad play. That stunkery I expected from game 1. While everyone was happy with the just-win-baby results, I was commenting on poor decision-making, sloppy footwork, and bad passes. Still, it was one game. Easily recoverable. Playoffs were still very much in our hands.

When we lost to Clemson, I was not completely surprised. It should have been closer, but I could accept we weren't quite at Clemson's level yet. We had grown that season and the trend-line was, overall, still very positive.

When we lost to Wisconsin in the bowl game, that one hurt. Possibly more than Pittsburgh. Wisconsin was our best-case-scenario matchup. They should not have been ranked as high as they were considering their schedule so beating this paper tiger (or paper badger) would have helped our end of season ranking, given our players some positive momentum and excitement to start the following season, and certainly helped in recruiting. And yet we lost. This was bad.

But we could still spin it: it was our best season in a long time, and things were looking up for 2018.

When Richt announced that Rosier was our starter against LSU, I was worried. Again: I liked how tough Rosier seemed to be but otherwise never saw the other positives about him. I never believed he would be the guy. But hey: Richt is there in practice every day. Why wouldn't he go with the better player? Plus, Perry was suspended for that first game. Probably broke some team rule like a young knucklehead might and a lesson needed to be learned. Pastor Richt ran a tight ship. Fine.

Losing to LSU was bad enough, but losing to LSU and seeing the exact same shortcomings we saw the previous season? No improvements in Rosier's play or the playcalling? Punter still looked like garbage? What the **** is going on here? What have they been doing the last few months? Defense looked like it may have actually regressed... This is when the scales fully tipped against Richt for me. I admit I was a Butch guy during the hiring process but I thought Richt was an inspired hire. I was excited and, despite the obvious playcalling deficiencies, I remained optimistic. Recruiting helped in that regard as well. I like Richt the man. I very much want to like Richt the coach, and not just because he is my team's coach and will remain so for the foreseeable future. But now, I viewed every game on our schedule with a jaundiced eye. Sure, LSU seemed like a good team - but our team hadn't improved in any measurable way.

When Perry came in against Savannah State, there wasn't much to see. I was probably more excited to see JW but there was even less to see there. The Toledo game was fine. Good, even. But Rosier's play was still suspect and I was still not seeing any measurable progress from the previous season. My scales remained tilted unfavorably against Richt.

But when the switch to Perry happened against FIU and seemed to stick - along with a change to our punter, I started to believe that maybe Richt had a plan all along and maybe he wasn't the immovable dinosaur so many claimed him to be. The team started to play with a bit more motivation - on both sides of the ball! This team liked Perry, trusted Perry, and clearly preferred to play for Perry over Rosier. Later, against the worst FSU squad we've seen in years, we barely squeaked by. But it was inspired hustle from our redshirt freshman quarterback that made it happen. Richt's playcalling isn't quite as horrible when a true gunslinger is able to make some great throws. And anyone with one eye and a pulse could plainly see that Perry was making throws Rosier never could. The scales moved a bit in Richt's favor. Things were looking up.

When he pulled Perry in the first half of the Virginia game, I could understand it. I didn't agree, but I gave Richt the benefit of the doubt. So our young guy came out cold and jittery in his first away game start; but he just had that great come-from-behind victory against FSU. I thought he'd settle down soon enough. But Richt obviously knew these players better than I did, and ostensibly knew what could help them and motivate them... so he pulled Perry when I wouldn't. Fine. But when he kept Rosier in at the top of the second half? I lost it. This was bad. How will Perry gain experience? And when Rosier continued to suck *** through the 3rd quarter and wasn't pulled? Worse still. If we are going to lose, at least lose with the guy who could potentially be our future. Give the young guy experience. ****, throw Jarren in there and give HIM experience. It was clear this team didn't play the same way - on either side of the ball - with Malik at the helm. I like the kid, but he should not be starting for us.

This loss completely tipped the scales for me in a way I don’t think can be recovered, when hope and optimism could no longer overshadow the negatives.

And when Richt announced, 10 days before the BC game, that Rosier was starting? Again, I knew it was another bad decision and it was another knock against Richt. But he still had an opportunity to right the ship if he was able to pull Rosier and throw Perry back in there once Rosier inevitably failed. But Richt never did. He just continued the failure throughout this BC game, continued the ineffective gameplanning and the uninspried play on both sides of the ball. All he needed to do was put Perry back in and we'd see this team spark. We all knew this. But it never happened. This is what a bye week of prep gets you? Dinking and dunking in the fourth quarter instead of letting the young gun come out and sling it?

Richt completely lost the team today, and he lost the fanbase. There will be mutiny and mistrust in the locker room and practice field just as it exists on the fan boards. The only ones who remain loyal to Richt at this point likely wouldn't budge regardless the circumstances.

Now, we're in an untenable situation. Realistically, Richt isn't going anywhere. But this team is clearly not motivated, and Richt's staff is grossly underperforming. The best we can hope for, I think, is significant changes in the coaches staff (Jon Richt and Stacey Searles, for starters) and that Jarren Williams emerges as the true superstar we all hoped he'd be. Hopefully the BoT puts enough pressure on Blake James and Richt to at least make that happen. Short of that, tough times will continue to await us.
Great, great post. I think the scales were tipped for me a lot sooner, I just seem to give Miami the benefit of the doubt more times than not because of how much I love this school. Love is blind, but this mess has gotten too big to be swept under the rug.

Perry’s a ****, and he wasn’t the answer at UVA or BC. He made a couple throws while going 40% against one of the worst pass defenses in the country (FSU).

People want to make Perry a hidden hero because they think that makes their case against Rick stronger. They don’t need that. All they need is the fact that Rick doesn’t think he has a QB better than the horrific Rosier on his roster. That’s way more than enough of an indictment against Rick, as he’s the guy who accumulated all of the wayward vagabonds who can’t beat out the morose Malik.

Rick’s recruiting/development of QBs has been scary for 6 or 7 years straight now. Part of the reason his hiring scared me so much was his QB situation the last 2 years at UbaGA. Bauta, Ramsey, Park, Lambert is a murdered row of slop he put out there.

P. S. Rick lost the fanbase after UVA. The Legend already proved that.

Funny cuz he finally landed another top recruit in Eason before they fired him. And although he was injured he was never able to get his job back from Fromm and was forced to transfer to Washington. He hasn’t seen the field in 3 years. And aside from all the QB development issues is the issue of his teams coming out softer than Christopher Reeves pud at the starlight bunny ranch. This goes back to his days at UbaGA. How many times were they hyped to make a huge run only to get face raped by Sabag or some other SEC rival.
Even with the atrocious play at QB if our teams played at 90% of their abilities we don’t lose the close games like Pitt and Virgina. His teams are taking on his flat, sickly personality.
