The Nevin hit piece reporter is fired

Also, I had to tell YouTube to stop recommending me Nevin Shapiro’s channel. Any of you watching Nevin Shapiro’s content need to take a hard look in the mirror. Dud e tried to bury this program and is now acting like a super fan.

It's what TOC said, it's one thing that he may have had business obligation to give this guy a platform, but his questions were weak. He gave him a tongue bath and to make matters worse, there were at least 2 so-called Cane fans who also engaged in the communal bath. One went as far to claim it was great journalism and that we should show respect.
I canceled my subscription that day and every year when his business would email me, trying to regain my subscription, I always reminded him that I don't give my business to rats.
Fk him.

They literally had dossier profiles for each player that were interact-able and listed each violation Nevin claimed to have given them. No credible evidence, just accusations that a convicted criminal had provided, along with his bank records. So on one hand, they blamed UM for being swindled by him. On the other, they took his word as gospel, pure, and without motivation. Wild times, the internet was much different back then.

I remember sitting at my kitchen table after talking to a friend who had read the article. He just said, “it’s bad man. Real bad.”

My young wife asked if I was ok, because I had a vein in my neck and forehead bulging. I thought our program was going to get the death penalty. Mind you, she’d seen me go through my dad dying suddenly.

I’ll never forget Chuckles’ “coming up for air” tweet. I didn’t know what twitter was before that.

So the guy had a dossier- that couldn’t even be corroborated by the guy who put the intel into the dossier- but was still parroted as the truth by people who drooled at the very thought of Miami getting smoked- I saw the remake of that movie.

Such an unhappy time and I can say, even stepping away as a fan, such an unfair time, for the school, the team, players, coaches, and athletic dept, and for us fans.

The phrase “witch hunt” is so overused, but in this case it fit the situation perfectly.
 
We have to be honest.

The people who BELIEVED Charles Robinson's poorly-sourced reporting...WANTED to believe him.

They wanted to believe that Shapiro's spending was the root cause of Miami's dominance, that if only he was not supporting UM athletics, then the University of Miami would not be winning championships.

Of course, those people neglected to acknowledge that Shapiro jumped on the bandwagon AFTER we won championships. He bought Axcess Sports in 2002 and began contributing to Miami in 2002. Therefore, not a single player that Shapiro "helped to recruit" ever contributed to a championship team at Miami.

Didn't matter. Those who chose to hate Miami were not going to spend any time devoted to critical thinking or analysis of evidence.

And Miami doesn't have any hometown sports reporters who, having spent a lot of time around the UM coaches and players, were willing to utilize their trusted contacts to research and write articles that might tell the whole story.

My former classmate, Dan LeBatard? Who had all that energy when LeBron James and Chris Bosh signed with the Heat? Yeah, he wasn't willing to say a **** word in support of his fellow Miami alums. Oh, that's right, because LeBatard had no compunction about selling out his former classmates in his desperate bid to get hired by Sports Illustrated when he wrote his original expose on Luther Campbell's bounties and Tony Russell's fraud-funded drug addiction.

Somehow, some way...when Michigan had its own "Seventh Floor Crew" scandal...when half of the Big 10 had employee *** abuse scandals...when half of the SEC was handing out money in McDonald's bags...when half of the F$U team was raping women and disposing of the videos by smashing their expensive (at the time) iPhones...the collective fan bases and sportswriters in all those other towns close ranks, minimize the damage, and then point a finger at Miami for used washing machines and letting guys get past the velvet rope at the VIP section of the club.

Miami against the world. We didn't ask for it, but everyone else in the country forced that upon us.

The potential story was known by a few other media outlets leading up to its release. In retrospect, the blame should be on Miami for running such a loose ship, poorly protecting the brand & allowing Shapiro so close to the program. We got lucky the NCAA enforcement staff screwed it up or the fallout could have been far more severe.

Speaking of local sports reporters, I remember little fat Manny Navarro pitching forth his own column about the UM "scandal". It was nothing but regurgitated amalgamated garbage that everyone already heard and read. It was weak sauce and it felt like he wrote it under pressure from his bosses at the Herald to put forth something, anything, so to not be outshone by other non-local sports outlets.
It was an infuriating era.
I have to think under this era, if NCAA and/or media have a go at this program, we will respond in
kind. We will drag out their dirty laundry as well and tell them to go fornicate themselves like the
Big10 and SEC have done to them of late.

Agree with this. Al Golden was a fat POS. But he still pulled some talent. He hustled hard at recruiting and built a staff focused on recruiting. If that scandal hadn't happened, he would have had a better team and won more games.

A competent NCAA is an oxymoron. Those guys had it in for us from day one.

I was 100% against our self-imposed penalties because the NCAA was just paying lip service to considering that during their own penalty decision, which they withheld for years in order to create the stink of a dead program causing recruits to avoid us.

I hate the NCAA worse than all of the other actors combined. They are corrupt to the core.

Not an NCAA fan, either. The particular enforcement folks on the case went rogue, had agendas & ended up exposing the operation as a mess. Thankfully, they ended up doing us a favor.

At the time, I thought that the NCAA would give us a four year penalty (loss of scholarships per year), plus a two year bowl ban. Or the death penalty. They seemed to really want to hammer us, as we were a very well known team that was not a blue blood, and punishing us would show that they cared about enforcement, without damaging core teams.
