To me, when people complain about our coaches this kind of stuff is why it's deserved.

We got a true freshman back there catching the punt.

He takes his eye off the ball, muffs it, goes back and — instead of falling on it to ensure possession — picks it up, takes off running and ends up fumbling it away.

Fortunately, we end up getting saved by a flukish penalty on NC State.

It's just the kind of mistake you would expect from a talented young kid on a HIGH SCHOOL team, but it's inexcusable on this level — and it's 100 percent a coaching problem.

I guarantee when Jacolby got to the sideline, the coaches were like, "Man, what you doin'??? You gotta fall on that ball!" as if how could he be so foolish.

But if JG — and all our punt returners — had been properly coached and drilled on this situation, we wouldn't have had some playground-looking **** happening that could've cost us the game.

Inexcusable and, again, completely on the coaches.

No problem with the play. Was it the "smart" play? No. but athletes sometimes just do that. Biggest thing for me was he likely should have made the fair catch with that gunner running down on em. Look at the Ed Reed strip or the OU Williams strip of his own guy on 4th down. If EITHER of those are fumbles where the other team gets it, both those dudes get roasted. It was NOT the smart play yet it worked out and both those guys are loved for it. Had he housed the kick, it would be a different tune. He had time to pick it up to try and make a play, just didn't work out.

Why did Braxton Berrios catch every single punt he was put back there to catch? Was he coached better? Or was he a ******* baller who was never caught up in the moment, worked his *** off catching punts, and answered the bell every time it rang?

Enough of this nonsense of attributing every single thing that happens negatively on coaching. Catch a ******* punt. Rique caught one inside the 2 yard line earlier in the year and I believe he muffed one as well. He's a 3rd year kid in college. I would bet my life he was told no fewer than 500x to: 1) Don't field the ball inside the 5 and 2) Catch the football. It's the coaches fault he did neither?

And this isn't defending Patke at all. If y'all wanna fire him, fire his ***. It's coaching in general. No kid in the history of the sport who muffed a punt will tell you it's because he wasn't coached. Why do you do it on this board?

P.S. the play he made was fine. He muffed it, which is inexcusable, went back and picked up the ball and started to run. If he fell on it at the 2 yard line with space to run, you guys would be saying the coaching sucks because he wasn't told to pick up the ball and run. He just didn't secure it and dropped it again after he took several steps after recovering it. Players gotta play at some point. All this board does is cry every single time anything is done that isn't perfect. Catch the football. You've done it 5 million times in your life. Do it when the lights are on.

OU was stopped on 4th down when Williams took that handoff, so it probably wasn't going to make things worse.

Their was far more risk than reward involved when George tried to pick up the muffed kick and run with it.

So with all of the punt return blunders the past 2-3 years you really think this wasn't coached? LOL. This is what you get with true freshman. In the words of Gennaro Gattuso

Agree. There are things you can attribute to coaching…obviously the easy one is scheme. It’s not like bama has some special machine or magical words that prevent their returners from muffing.

However, I can blame the coach if you continue putting guys on the field that repeatedly muffs punts in practice or has done so multiple times in a game.

That’s why we were ****ed at the coaches for continuing to put Pope on the field even though he drops a couple of passes a game.

CIS: This staff sucks, all the older kids blow, we need to play all the freshmen, they're way better!!!

Also CIS: This staff sucks, who puts a true freshman back to return punts??! Don't we have someone older to do that?!!?!?!!?

And he was right back out there when they re did 4th down? I was watching game with my buddy and we both looked at each other and said “I guarantee you he will be put right back out there”

Zero accountability. It’s pathetic but expected at this point

Patke should not be coaching special teams. KO & punt coverage has been horrible with him as coach. Constant miscues and penalties, fake punt conversions given up. That 4th & 8 fake punt run for 40 yards almost cost them the game.
Add in horrible recruiter.

Agree totally with this. If George was muffing punts all over the place in practice, and they put him out there in a game, **** yes that's inexcusable and that's coaching. But if you practice catching punts every day and you're comfortable with the kid doing it and he drops one in a game, that's not coaching. A LOT of the issues on this team are related to coaching. Plenty. But I have news for you guys, not every single bad thing that happens is because of our coaches. These kids have been playing football since they were 5 years old. Just about every single one of them. It's not Stephen Field's fault that Will Mallory drops a TD when he's standing all by himself in the endzone and it hits him between the 8 and the 5. Sorry. You're a supposed good player, highly recruited by multiple power programs. Make a play.

It’s one of the main problems with society. It’s never my fault. It’s on the coaches so I’m transferring.

If you want the young guys out there playing, you need to expect they will make young guy mistakes. If he muffs again, sit his a$$ and get another guy in there, but if you want to get these more talented young guys on the field, expect inexperienced errors to occur.

You can't pull a kid for EVERY mistake. Did you see the Ravens game two weeks ago when Hollywood Brown dropped like 3 EASY td's? Dude did not miss a snap. With TF, need to know putting them out there that there will be mistakes and not crush a kid's confidence when he does mess up. An argument can be made he shouldn't be back there in the first place, but once you ride with him you gotta ride it out. **** I think it was Bama two or three weeks ago and Slade muffed a punt and went right back out for the next one.

Yes sir. How many kids who transferred from here have turned into superstars when other staffs unlocked the immense potential that the coaches here were holding back, by the way? The Heisman finalist show featuring Lorenzo Lingard, Brian Hightower, Marquez Ezzard, Jarren Williams and Christian Williams is going to be really awkward.

But I thought it was all the coaches' fault? If it's the coaches' fault that the kids make poor plays, why are we benching them?

So we want the coaches to play the freshmen, but when they make freshmen mistakes, they shouldn't be playing freshmen.
We can't coach, so when the kids make mistakes, it's not their fault, it's poor coaching that causes every poor play.
But when the kids make mistakes, which are not their fault, they should be pulled from the game and never play again.

Do any of you realize how absolutely insane this sounds?
