The Myth Surrounding the Miami Hurricanes Football Program

I'm really starting to feel like my love of football is my love of the memories I have of football. It feels like the game changed so much for both college and pros.
I totally agree with that. It's as if I'm not even watching the same game. It often feels like glorified flag football to me.

I’ve been a Miami Hurricanes Football fan since I was 10 years old in 1967. Most of you can do the simple math and undoubtedly some can’t. I vividly recall sitting in the iconic Orange Bowl with a few thousand other Hurricanes faithful watching our team win a few we shouldn’t, lose a few we shouldn’t and be fairly competitive for the most part.

In the previous 40 odd years of Hurricanes football, we never even sniffed a National Championship trophy. In walks Howard Schnellenberger in 1979. Granted, HC Lou Saban didn’t leave the cupboard bare but coach Schnelly took the program to heights never seen before with his pro style offense and speed. Most other teams were still running ground and pound wishbone offenses and opponents Defensive Coordinators were baffled as to how to stop an offense they’d never seen before.

Schnelly won an Improbable NC in 1983 and left for greener ($$$) pastures. Jimmy Johnson walks in and keeps the train rolling and capitalizes on his success with an NFL gig. Dennis Erickson walks in and capitalizes on Jimmy’s success with 2 NC’s but also puts the program in a precarious situation.

A midget scumbag gets his slimy paws deep into the program and **** near causes a death penalty to the football program. Butch Davis miraculously raises the program from the dead and leaves the program with such talent in 2001 that a HC with the nickname of Clappy was able to win our 5th National Championship - something we hadn’t done IN 10 YEARS.

While all of this was taking place, most of you were probably still lurking in your further father's balls when they were the size of grapes. Fast forward to today, and there are many “fans” that believe because we had that 18 year improbable run that we are destined for more of the same.

It’s been 25 years since we won our last National Championship.

To expect a run from 1983 to 2001 now is unrealistic at best. The rest of CFB has caught and surpassed us by a country mile. Mario has now proven that unless he is willing to adapt and change his hard headed ways, we’ll continue to be the program I watched as a young fella in the 60’s and 70’s. Until, and unless that happens, I’ll continue to watch our Hurricanes Football team as I did as a young fella just enjoying the game of football and hopeful for an improbable win or 12.
Lived most of the history & quite accurate. Lost me a bit with scumbag midget or whatever reference. First assumption was Mr Shapiro, though he surfaced long after Butch skipped town for greener pastures. Was there another scoundrel ?

Shapiro was who I was referencing.

Yeah. Man I am not as old as you, but as a Miami homer, I've seen 5 football titles, 4 baseball titles, 3 Heat Finals wins, 2 Marlins World Series wins, a Braves WS win (I was a big Atlanta fan before the Marlins), and now 2 Panthers Stanley Cup wins. I'm....kinda good? All I really need to see now are Dolphins Super Bowl wins and the Canes to win a Final 4.
Awesome you’ve experienced all those championships. Football is #1 for me but I enjoy all those others as well. Been a Phins fan since day one in 1966 but the last 53 years have been brutal. I did get to see 4 early Super Bowls in the OB - ‘69, ‘72, ‘75 and ‘79. Certainly nothing like they are today but back then, was an awesome experience.

My very first year as a season ticket holder with my dad we got to the Super Bowl. I was there for the Mud Bowl against the Jets, so Dolphins Super Bowls were kind of expected for me, especially getting there again in Marino 2nd year. I was in the OB for the 1st title against Nebraska. My anchor years for both pro and college football were pretty ridiculous

We built a roster that is supposed to win 11 out of 12 games this regular season.

That's all we want.

The ND would have been an acceptable loss (as long as it was close).

SMU and Louisville are not acceptable losses. Especially when they happen EVERY YEAR. Multiple times a year even.

I left Miami in ‘83 and damned if we didn’t win our 1st NC that year. LOL. And then the Heat, Marlins, and Panthers come to town.

I was born in '86 so everything from '94 and up I clearly remember, I know we will probably ever be able to replicate the 2001 team, I dont think most Miami fans are that delusional, but i todays CFB you dont need that in order to win the ACC, make the playoffs, or be competitive on the national scene. I just think most fans want to be competitive on the national scale and see where that can get us, we are very capable of doing this, but Mario and bro ball makes it harder than it has to be

I believe it’s a very reasonable expectation to expect that we should beat inferior teams and be competitive with good teams. We’ve been losing to inferior teams for a long time. I’m not sure what the issue/s are although it seems there are a multitude of reasons for this phenomenon.

Most other teams were still running ground and pound wishbone offenses
