I’ve been a Miami Hurricanes Football fan since I was 10 years old in 1967. Most of you can do the simple math and undoubtedly some can’t. I vividly recall sitting in the iconic Orange Bowl with a few thousand other Hurricanes faithful watching our team win a few we shouldn’t, lose a few we shouldn’t and be fairly competitive for the most part.

In the previous 40 odd years of Hurricanes football, we never even sniffed a National Championship trophy. In walks Howard Schnellenberger in 1979. Granted, HC Lou Saban didn’t leave the cupboard bare but coach Schnelly took the program to heights never seen before with his pro style offense and speed. Most other teams were still running ground and pound wishbone offenses and opponents Defensive Coordinators were baffled as to how to stop an offense they’d never seen before.

Schnelly won an Improbable NC in 1983 and left for greener ($$$) pastures. Jimmy Johnson walks in and keeps the train rolling and capitalizes on his success with an NFL gig. Dennis Erickson walks in and capitalizes on Jimmy’s success with 2 NC’s but also puts the program in a precarious situation.

A midget scumbag gets his slimy paws deep into the program and **** near causes a death penalty to the football program. Butch Davis miraculously raises the program from the dead and leaves the program with such talent in 2001 that a HC with the nickname of Clappy was able to win our 5th National Championship - something we hadn’t done IN 10 YEARS.

While all of this was taking place, most of you were probably still lurking in your future father's balls when they were the size of grapes. Fast forward to today, and there are many “fans” that believe because we had that 18 year improbable run that we are destined for more of the same.

It’s been 25 years since we won our last National Championship.

To expect a run from 1983 to 2001 now is unrealistic at best. The rest of CFB has caught and surpassed us by a country mile. Mario has now proven that unless he is willing to adapt and change his hard headed ways, we’ll continue to be the program I watched as a young fella in the 60’s and 70’s. Until, and unless that happens, I’ll continue to watch our Hurricanes Football team as I did as a young fella just enjoying the game of football and hopeful for an improbable win or 12.

I don’t think that is the expectation.

We want to stop the consistent self-inflicted wounds caused by team and coaches. These wounds are preventing us from maximizing this window of catching up with other programs when it comes to resources and money.

I think most here would be happy if we played a single nationally relevant game in December. Few are expecting the run of 83, 87, 89, 91, 01

I have no idea who you think thinks we’re gonna have a run like we did from 1983 to 2001

I don’t think that it’s too much to ask to be one of 12 teams that makes the playoff and that’s why people are ****ed today

423Hurricane,

Like you I have been following the canes for a very long time. 1963 when I was still in high school in New Jersey.

We have seen it all. The ups and the downs and the good and the really bad. But we continue to watch and route for our team. I attended Miami a long time ago. So long ago I can remember talking to Ted Hendricks as we walked to our classes.

I love the Canes and I hate when they waste talent. Unfortunately we have an offense that is so old and so easy to stop....and we got stopped many times this season. I'm sure coach is a good guy but he is stubborn. What he remembers when he was a player at Miami is no longer the game of college football (well, maybe at the Ivy's).

If he's smart he will have a conference with his, and later his team, telling him that the team will run a more open offense from here on out. Oh but one can dream!

My point was that even the slightest inkling of a run like that today is totally unrealistic. Your comment proves that the expectations have been lowered and that’s a very realistic expectation.

Not sure what the OP’s historical soliloquy has to do with Mario’s inability to beat inferior ACC teams.
Because there are many that live in the past and expect the same results. CFB has changed dramatically and the Hurricane football program was left in the dust.

No realistic fan expects that same run of 5 NC’s in an 18 year time-frame… but do you think it’s unrealistic for UM to not regularly compete for ACC Championships?

Not regularly compete for a CFP berth in this 12 team era?

Beating the likes of Louisville, SMU, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, etc. to achieve those goals are not unrealistic expectations.

Not unrealistic at all to expect to beat teams we out talent. But the reality is we haven’t done it consistently for years and past success won’t help us do that. We see every year teams with superior talent get beat - NCST beating GT last night. The problem is we do it far too many times and it won’t stop until we catch up with (if ever) with the rest of CFB.

Is it really through or is it only totally unrealistic here? It was pre NIL when Bama did their thing with 6 under Saban. They're one of the schools with OSU and Georgia that are typically in it every year.

I do agree it's done here though. I've said that for a decade and change now. Still, anything is possible, but the one thing you've gotta do is lock down more elite talent l (in particular offensive skill position) from the state.

Mario isn't that guy though.

I'm really starting to feel like my love of football is my love of the memories I have of football. It feels like the game changed so much for both college and pros.

Simple, to the point, and I agree.

I haven't watched a single second of the NFL, barely watch college basketball, and the NBA zero seconds as well. NFL, I quit when free agency swapped players around (sound familiar, college is now worse) and the NBA when it was buy a dream team championship time.

We should just accept the awful results then huh? Hope they fold the program. Because that same attitude has poisoned the program

Yeah. Man I am not as old as you, but as a Miami homer, I've seen 5 football titles, 4 baseball titles, 3 Heat Finals wins, 2 Marlins World Series wins, a Braves WS win (I was a big Atlanta fan before the Marlins), and now 2 Panthers Stanley Cup wins. I'm....kinda good? All I really need to see now are Dolphins Super Bowl wins and the Canes to win a Final 4.
