the most frustrating thing about yesterday...

Bill Walsh rolled over in his grave watching this monstrosity..

If you're offense is reliant on having 10 All-Americans and 5 future Pro-Bowlers, well, the problem is what your running and how you're calling it
I told you last week when Garcia had a 4th down pic about that play. Gattis runs the same plays over n over. Especially on money downs. Teams have film on this Offense and they are sitting on everything. If you notice he has success early in the game where he uses his new spread plays, but we struggle when he reverts to what he’s comfortable with, which is bunch drags.

Thats not the point, Mario played there for years and didnt do the same with same team is what the tweet is tryna convey. They can take same level of talent and squeeze more juice out of it. Mario can take a offensive team and bring the level down at miami, lashlee offense was returning the same talent essentially and we have nose dive. TVD look like Kyle Wright and Garcia look like kirby freemen..
Most of us WHO didn't eat Mario bros knew this. Kyle Whittingham showed how to beat him. I knew he was 🗑

We are 113th in run/pass ratio. This isn’t smash mouth football. That’s a myth that needs to die. This is a pass-happy offense that sucks at passing.

We need massive, fundamental changes, but the problem isn’t running too much.
It’s more the lack of spacing IMO. And just crummy pass concepts. It’s hard to discern how poor the scheme is with Jake in there.

In the midst of all these threads filled with whining and complaining........are some really good discussions. I just hope they’re having the same discussions at the Hecht. When there’s this much discussion around a single issue (the offense in this case) then there’s obviously a problem with that issue..

his offense is certainly a drag

We have the only ground-and-pound passing attack in football...

just watching over college games, involving the likes of UCLA, Tenn, etc, just how easy they move the ball and score. They create open space for their skill guys, big plays downfield, and it looks easy and efficient. It looks modern. We looks prehistoric at times in our approach

Our old friend, Jedd Fisch, is putting up some numbers at a rebuilding Arizona program. Oregon, they are racking up numbers. Go down the line across the country.

Everything UM does offensively is a grind. Just very difficult, and they can't layer their plays to create explosive ones down the line

Yeah, I get it, our OLine is depleted, running backs are down, we need an infusion of speed outside (all of which will be addressed through recruiting and portal), but your system and play-calling have to be tailored for the current players you have. I get it, I dont expect the 2001 unit, but I would think we should average at least 20 points vs P5 teams

Last season under Lashlee we were around 35 points per game.

I dont know if this is all on Josh Gattis, but he certainly shoulders some of the blame.

My one concern about Mario was his offensive philosophy(tied into game management), and well, this season hasn't assuaged my worries in that department. It's Ok to put up 50-points on folks and just blow them out. It doesn't always have to be ground-and-pound.

Absolutely agree; however in regards to UCLA, just remember when Chip got there, even as a high octane offensive mastermind, UCLA struggled mightily. They went 7-17 his first 2 yrs there, losing to Fresno St, San Diego St, Cincy, and really bad Oregon St & ASU teams, struggling to score (97th in 2018, 80th in 2019). It was in yr 3.5 (Covid was yr 3), where UCLA & the O that Chip envisioned started to click. Now they are 11th.

****, UA was 124th in scoring last season, going 1-11. While they r still sub .500 this yr, they look night & day different, now ranked 47th in scoring.

The key for UCLA was gutting that locker room. They had several guys on that team that weren’t fully vested in FB & there were clashes. Chip was “this” close to being fired as he was viewed as the problem his 1st 3 yrs. Jedd in 2022 raided So Cal & gave a shot in the arm in UA football’s recruiting they haven’t had since the mid 2000’s w/ Mike Stoops & Sonny Dykes running the show. In one class, he added literal mercenaries from top So Cal HS.

That brings me to us; Gattis gotta go, period. His offensive play calling is pure garbage. It’s not fun, innovative, or fun to watch. We talk Bro Man Mario, but even at UO Mario ain’t NEVER had an offense this bad. This leads me to believe that Gattis was more of a water boy at UofM vs. an actual play caller. It would behoove Mario & this admin to cut its losses & fire this gimp.

With that being said, we’re doubled f’d b/c we lack juice. Even when plays have been there, protection have been there, we’ve just not executed. I’ve seen poor throws, dropped balls, misreads, and lack of speed. So we have a play caller that sucks, and our weapons r mere pop guns found in the toy section. Watching the game, one comment was made about Key Smiff’s inability to separate; “the coaching staff is still waiting for him to put it together.” It’s not just this coaching staff, I have, too. He runs in slow motion at times, & for a former track guy, his get off is pedestrian. I was one of his biggest fans, but it doesn’t matter who’s covering him, he has a valet wherever he is.

When I see all our guys, I don’t see real speed; Hyatt for Tennessee, elite speed. Harrison Jr? Elite Speed. Bobo for UCLA is like Young; big framed guy w/o top end speed, but knows how to use his length, route running & catch radius to give DTR easy throws. That’s y Young came off the streets & immediately became WR 1. Even w B Smith, I don’t see elite top end speed.

So we have two issues; play calling & play making, and BOTH needs be fixed this off season; but, Gattis is #1 priority to clear his office & leave Coral Gables. Inexcusable.

It’s even worse because we got teased with Lashlee. Prior to him our offense was just like it is now. A mess. He comes in and dudes are wide open all the time, and now we’re right back to a mess.

we went from being the last house on the block to having a VCR, then finally we got a Netflix sub..

now, back to Blockbuster Video on Friday nights...

I agree that he is a talent acquisition guy. If he believes that championship teams have huge offensive lines that can impose their will running the ball, he is correct historically and currently. But those teams are also cutting-edge in the passing game.

My hope is that we see something like Oklahoma. People focus on their passing, but they were a majority-run team with a huge OL. That is the ideal vision for us IMO.
Need to call Lincoln Riley’s brother, Garrett who is currently the OC at TCU. Pay him whatever he wants.

A few responses.

Firstly, good post. It is very difficult to find a comparison for Miami nationally because we are truly a unique entity and situation in college football...but as of this post, the closest I've been able to think of is UCLA ... or at least somewhere between UCLA and USC (they've had more recent success than us, so its a tough parallel, but same spectrum). UCLA is not close to our level historically as a program, but a big city school that was left dilapidated by gross negligence for over decades (for us, nearly decades). That can take a long time to fix. For UCLA, they've likely wanted to fire Chip numerous times if not for being absolutely broke and unable to afford his buyout + hiring a new coach. The culture of the program was in shambles and took a long time to clear out. I've made note in some other threads...Miami has been one of the worst (if not THE most) penalized teams in the nation for YEARS. We've constantly been in the 100s. Its a roster filled with guys that are undisciplined that simply have not been coached up or held accountable for their development for a long time. Some of the new coaches haven't connected with what we do have either...thats on them. Its no shock that basically all of our best players are transfers sans a few (Leonard Taylor, for example). UCLA, too, was/is filled with transfers during the Kelly era and the best players were transfers and his true freshmen early on.

Another response would be to the lack of speed in the program...I absolutely agree. I've said on this forum for years now we are small and slow as a roster. It is very tough to come in and change a lot when the team was built with small and/or slow players. Just look at the Offensive Line personnel for example... The culture also bred a lot of players that just don't work hard. Plenty of people have noted the differences in practice and expectations with the new staff to the next. On the flip side, TCU had been struggling for the past few years under Gary Patterson, but GP was a good coach (although, may have lost his fastball and was unable to truly change with the times), but he left a roster filled with speed and some size that the new staff has been able to utilize for more immediate success...it was also not a program dilapidated with negligence...it just needed a shot in the arm.

Mario HIRED Gattis, He hired Ponce. Our QB look worse than last year, not only TVD but Garcia look like Kirby Freeman.

Also its not just throwing the ball, you cant look at box scores and say oh "Mario is Lincoln Riley with the pill bro!" Its about philosophy, Mario has made it abundantly clear he doesnt want to run those types of offenses.. He had full autonomy to hire who he wanted and the wallet to get that also, he held multiple interviews, these are his choices, he greenlit the scheme
Hopefully Garcia looks like Freeman against FSU. 😆

Early on there was a lot of noise he was interviewing and waiting on Joe Brady. It dragged on inasmuch as Brady was angling for an NFL job. He eventually ended up with the Bills as QB coach working for Dorsey.

Mario should spend a week in Buffalo this NFL season. He wanted both those guys, but neither had any real interest. They want to be NFL head coaches and both will be sooner than later.

We are small and you can’t really teach that (but you can recruit that) Only CY scares you when lining up.

But we def aren’t as explosive as we can be. The footwork is horrible. We recruit hs players that might be fast in a straight line but they are raw from a footwork respect and our coaches aren’t coaching that up. We don‘t know how to get in and out of our cuts at all. Even CY is unrefined as a route runner - his saving grace is he got size and uses it well in contested ball situations because he uses his hands.

Leaking crap out to cover his *** and blaming players is when I was out. Telling the media your qb doesn’t have wr’s numbers was beyond sleazy and we all know why he did it. I knew coming in he was a pretty toxic dude and he hasn’t disappointed.
Gattis or Ponce or both lol

BR, Ive said this for awhile, the reputation of UM being a program that is really fast(across the board) is one of the most overrated and untrue perceptions in all of college football. The last time we were really that was probably around 2005(before we blew that game vs Gatech, and our guys quit on that season)

But since then, we have been average and ordinary as a team when it comes to athleticism

I will say this, I was near the recruiting lounge before the UNC game, I saw some of our guys like Francis and J-Wayne, the body types and frames are different. Mario has a certain prototype, and yeah, those youngsters look different in terms of length and frame. It's noticeable.

Our problems aren't just schematic, but also physical. Cristobal has to rebuild this on several fronts.

I’m not going to get into the hiring process, but from what we all heard, I don’t think Gattis was his 1st choice. Water under the bridge at this point.

There’s also the argument that Mario isn’t an X’s and O’s guru so my question is just how much influence does he really have on the O scheme.

We could go on and on as to why we’re seeing the **** we’re seeing on offense. Bottom line is it’s obvious something’s gotta give and only Mario has the power to change it…… or not.
it’s fair to ask why couldn’t he attract his better choices?
Maybe those candidates didn’t buy into his offensive vision so they passed.

I agree with everything you just said.

Things look like a mess right now, and are a mess, because there are lots of puzzle pieces that just don't go together and you mush'em together all you want and its just not going to work. Its one of the reasons I continue to say "blame who you want" because odds are good you're right.

Just trying to enjoy what I can and watch the program develop from ground zero.
