The Mark Stoops thread

Stoops would kill it here. Younger version of Schiano but he won’t say no like Schiano probably will. With our current stable of QBs we’ll probably skyrocket to 11 wins first year. Plus he’s got recruiting connections down here.

A lot of you forgot how he murdered Golden on the trail when he was the DC at FSU.

He was Oregon's OC beforehand, no? And just an OC at some small school before that. Never a HC before.

I think he fits into the bucket of top notch assistants at power schools or coaches hired from other P5 schools.
No. He was Saban’s personal hit man on the trail.

That's my thinking about Stoops. And, having faced the SEC for several years, he won't be intimidated when we go play the big boys.

I think the Schiano comparison is a good one, but I would add "more likeable."

I like Freeze. I think he's the equivalent to Kiffin maybe a small step down. I think he wins 10 games here with ease and has us in the playoffs when/if he gets a 1st round type at QB. Dan Mullen type offensive guru with a higher recruiting ability.

As far as us hiring him or not based on his past.. I'm gonna lean towards them avoiding that as long as who is in charge is still here.

Give Freeze a real DC and we are in serious business. But as many have said, .00000001% chance this school ever hires him with his past.

The more I read other posters write about Mark and looked a little close at what he's done at Kentucky, the more he moves up my rankings. He checks off so many boxes:
  • His teams are disciplined
  • His teams are tough
  • He faces the best competition in the best conference in football and holds his own
  • Although for some, this would actually be a negative, but I like it that he not only coached for us and did a great job, but also he was with us during our last glory years.
  • If this matters at all, he comes from the most famous coaching family in college football (three of them were/are HC's at D1 schools).
I still prefer Mario and Lane, but upon further reflection, he very well might be the answer. Especially if we whiff on the first two.
The championship defense Stoops built at FSU is what Manny’s defense should look like now in year 6. Was Stoops a big recruiter on that staff?

I would go with:

1.)Urban Meyer-Rumors are he doesn't like the NFL. Make a call, dig for interest. He is already in Florida.

2.)Hugh Freeze-Very good offensive minded head coach
3.)Bob Stoops-Kick the tires see if he misses coaching? I remember he has a home in South Florida. He obviously missed it enough to get back in coaching XFL.
4.)Mario-He isn't as good a coach as the top 3, but he should improve discipline, and he is a nasty recruiter.

After that you have Lane Kiffin, Mark Stoops, and Neal Brown ON THE CALL LIST.

That is a real coaching search. No need to pay for a firm.

If you reply and say these are pipe dreams, then that tells you the root issue.

The administration, because if you really cared about football and school success, this would be your target.

We know that they don't, and won't though.

Stoops recruits very well to be at UK. He also identifies and develops talent really well. I know I’m in the minority because everyone’s **** is throbbing wanting Mario but Stoops would be my first call. He has that Jimmy Johnson feel to him

247 doesn’t credit Stoops for FSU’s amazing defensive hauls under Jimbo.

Coming from G5 scares me. That's my holdout on Napier.

Aside from Matt Campbell being above average at Iowa State - who is the last HC to come into the P5 from a G5 school and win at a high level?

It's all been top notch assistants or guys that have went from one P5 HC job to another that are good. Brian Kelly might be the only other one i can think of coming from Cincinnati to ND. Freeze was good for Ole Miss but still lost 3+ every year.

The recent hot names from G5 - Norvell - bum, Taggart - bum, Fuente - bum, McElwain - bum, Satterfield - hasn't worked yet, Drinkwitz - too early to tell, Geoff Collins - hasn't won yet, Bronco Mendenhall - hasn't won anything yet, Charlie Strong - bum, Tom Herman - didn't win anything, Butch Jones - bum.

Obviously I'm not going to count Kiffin coming from FAU because he had 2 P5 jobs before that.

Jay, you mentioned Herman - what happened there? If ever there was a coach who I thought would absolutely kill it once he got a big job, was Herman because of what he did in a short amount of time at Houston. I mean that and Willie Williams not being an all star are a couple of the great CFB failures that defy all logic and indicators. What's your theory on Herman?
I personally think he is an intriguing HC option.

Texas Longhorns (Big 12 Conference) (2017–2020)
2017Texas7–65–4T–4thW Texas
2018Texas10–47–22ndW Sugar99
2019Texas8–55–4T–3rdW Alamo25
2020Texas7–35–33rdW Alamo2019
Texas:32–1822–13

Had some losses, but for the most part his teams were always competitive.

He was 4-0 in Texas bowl games.

Had two top 5 recruiting classes.

Again, first call goes to Mario but Herman is a guy I would definitely consider.

I loved Tom Herman. Still think he would be a very good OC under someone like Mario.

He just didn't turn Texas around as fast as they wanted him to. Hard to compete with Oklahoma and Texas A&M recruiting and similar to Miami - everyone is there recruiting the guys you want. They haven't been relevant in over a decade. Too many whiffs recruiting the trenches and at LB. Didn't really have a good enough DC.

A lot of his own doing. Typical G5 to premier level of CFB job failure that happens every single time it seems. Happened to everyone except Brian Kelly. Herman probably learns from mistakes and rebounds and kills it at his next stop. It takes getting fired to look in the mirror and figure it out.

This is main reason I throw him in my list after Mario and Bob Stoops. What he did at FSU and Kentucky is amazing. Him and Lane Kiffin would be who I am calling if the first two say no.

Plenty of good options out there to look at.

Unfortunately, none of them are currently coaching at UM... isn't that a prerequisite?

Not my first choice but I think he would surprise a lot of people and do well here. If he learned his lesson and doesn't try to keep his G5 staff and transition them all to the P5 job. Upgrade jobs and upgrade your staff. Todd Orlando is not a championship level defensive coordinator. He didn't learn that lesson fast enough.

Good news: Mark Stoops' buyout is only $1,650,000.00.

Bad news: He makes more in just base salary at Kentucky than Manuela makes here.

I mean, I wouldn't hate it if they went with Stoops. Let's first try Mario and Lane, but I think Mark should be next man up if the BOT is too scared to give Freeze a real look. If they're willing to give Freeze a real once over, then I might move him to #3, but yeah, Mark Stoops could definitely come here and make a go of it. If nothing else, at least we'd win a minimum of 9 games a season and stabilize the program back to a Coastal favorite and possible ACC champ.

At this point, I'd take that and become dissatisfied with a lack of natty's later. First, get the patient stabilized and then look at rehab.
