The Mali TD. Please explain

I don't understand the penalty.
Educate me please.
We had multiple guys moving, look at the play clock, so we were rushed.. then they tell Jacobs at top of screen to widen out (I am assuming to isolate toney) while Jacobs at top of screen is adjusting, Mensah sends Lofton in motion without Jacobs being set at top of screen (you video cuts out the full thing so you dont see beginning)..

I cue up full sequence for you, press play

Tough penalty, if we score there, McCoy doesnt get hurt next play..

Thanks for your help, man...
I guess my question is what is the purpose of the penalty to begin with?
What harm is done?

Multiple guys moving and not set is probably thought of as too much advantage to offense, like sending three guys in motion at same time would not be fair to defense maybe lol.. All we needed to do was wait a tick and then send guy in motion and its a great play and heisman moment for both guys..

Given all of the advantages already given to offense, multiple players in motion would be unfair/unbalanced. Similar to why, outside of the CFL, a player cannot move toward the LOS prior to the snap.

Barkate wasn’t set for a second before Lofton went in motion either. Easy call, is going to he made 100 times out of 100. Rushing at the end of the clock and sloppy.
barkate was good...it was the coaches tellinh Jacobs to widen out at the tophe wasnt set for a second an soon as it snapped bottom ref down the line threw the flag.

it was dumb since he wasnt gonna be a factor in the play...that whole play was set up for mali ad worked ****** perfectly.

Same thing happened with Mali against FSU last year, ticky tacky LOS penalty when Keelan went up field right before snap... Doesnt affect play but they call it.. take TD off board smh

yup.

its at the refs discretion n sometime they be ticky tack about it.

Jacobs wass already set so i dont like that the coaches causd it really...

you can see mario sayin " cmon you cant call that" to the ref...bu it was the bottom ref that called it and not th eone on our side.

* on second look...Barkate also moved up as well so we had two guys not set. considering the ref at bottom called it musta been on barkate

Here is what happened.

The penalty was ILLEGAL SHIFT. Multiple players can move and shift pre-snap, as long as they ALL come to a stop for 1 second. In addition, one player can be in motion at the time of the snap.

The players at the top of the screen are Malachi Toney and Vandrevius Jacobs. They switch as follows: (a) Toney is on the line and Vandrevius Jacobs is in the backfield, and they switch those roles, and (b) they both split out wider, Toney by a little and Jacobs by a lot. BOTH PLAYERS REMAIN SET FOR AT LEAST ONE SECOND.

In the center, Fletcher switches sides and Mensah goes up to the line and back. BOTH PLAYERS REMAIN SET FOR AT LEAST ONE SECOND.

The players at the bottom are Cooper Barkate and Elija Lofton. Similar to Toney and Jacobs, they both swith positions as follows: (a) Lofton is on the line and Barkate is in the backfield, and they switch those roles, and (b) Barkate splits out wider AND Lofton both drops in the backfield AND goes in motion.

HERE IS THE ERROR: Lofton, when he is on the line, has his left foot forward and his right foot back. When he adjusts into the backfield, he again has his left foot forward and his right foot back, but then decides he needs his right foot forward and his left foot back. UNFORTUNATELY, as he makes this adjustment, HE NEVER COMES TO A FULL STOP BEFORE HE THEN GOES IN MOTION. Thus, all of his cumulative movement, the drop back to the backfield, the foot shifting, and the lateral motion ARE ALL A PART OF THE SAME SET OF MOVEMENTS WITHOUT EVER COMING TO A STOP FOR ONE SECOND BEFORE GOING INTO MOTION.

The penalty was on Lofton.

The purpose of the penalty is for the defense to have at least one second to see the "final" formation, prior to ONE player going in motion.

Otherwise, an offense could move all 11 guys up to the moment of the snap.

The ultimate goal of the rule is for all 11 players to show where the formation is, and THEN one is allowed to go into motion up to and including the moment of the snap, otherwise there is "chaos".

Lofton kept shuffling his feet as he was resetting, thus he never remained set for one second prior to going in motion.

Penalty was on Lofton, not Jacobs.

watched the replay again, it was not that they were not set for a second. Wingo moves his leg back while Lofton is in motion. ticky tacky call.

Two men in motion would be illegal motion. It's an illegal SHIFT because Lofton never came to a 1-second stop before he went in motion.

HERE IS THE ERROR: Lofton, when he is on the line, has his left foot forward and his right foot back.
