His mental awareness and his physical traits are something that I have never seen.

His tendon stiffness and his explosiveness at any sort of speed are ridiculous. He can stop from any pace and accelerate instantly out of it. Pair that with his head and body fakes that he can do whilst running at almost full speed and you have a generational talent.

There's this famous quote from Dutch soccer legend Johan Cruyff that seems applicable to Mali on the football field

"What is speed? The sports press often confuses speed with insight. See, if I start running slightly earlier than someone else, I seem faster."

Mali has the innate ability to anticipate a gap in the defense and get there not too early, not too late, but right on time.

He caught 109 passes last year from a QB whose accuracy came and went. Then in his first game with the new QB: 12 receptions for a school-record 234 yards and 3 TDs.

Crazy as it sounds considering defenses are keyed up to stop him, but Mali is always open

It’s so funny you used a Kruyff quote cause watching Mali reminds me of
@DMoney ‘s favorite Mali comparison in terms of fame in Miami, Messi.

Messi was never the fastest player, even in his prime. But he was the best at understanding angles, using his head to fake defenders, and making them look silly with his decisiveness. He could accelerate and decelerate more efficiently than anyone. They are so similar in the way they move.

This is how in a team sport one player flips the field. Mail on the field either means picking poison.
Single coverage and he wins
Double coverage and someone else wins
One high safety will never work
Two high safeties and we should be able to run.

The matchup we hopefully get is Toney v. Leonard Moore. For a WR/CB matchup that is must see viewing. And I don’t care that Moore plays outside because if he’s their best corner, they put him on Mali. If not, Mali will turn ND inside out.

It is everything he does... I posted this in a different Toney thread but like Mario has said just follow the kid around for a day, see what he does. I dont think that is an empty gesture. Dude grinds every second and puts on for his community and teammates.

Like check this out from the all 22, jump to 2:40 Toney is in the slot at the top, this is with like 6 min left in 1Q plays ends up being a short pass to Upshaw at the bottom of the screen but he gets the 1st down. Watch Toney....



First, Toney EASILY could have had 300+ yards this game, Mensah could have thrown all 30 passes to Toney and have prob better numbers than he did. He torches his guy on this play and has a walk in TD. He doesnt get the ball, how many times do you see a player throw there hands up, jump up and down, or just have some body language that shows displeasure? Now maybe if it was an incompletion Toney shows that but instead?

Upshaw catches it, first down Miami and Toney is at the top of the screen by himself dancing and celebrating for Upshaw. We are lucky to have this cat.

Talent, hardwork, and humility.

Inviting Jaxson Smith-Njigba to his WR camp, and then working with him (as well as gathering a who's who of SoFla WRs) to learn tells us just a bit of who the kid is. Mali isn't content with where he's at and constantly pushing himself to learn more.

That move at the goaline he was working on with JSN this summer.
