True. Marve had some attention issues off the field as I recall. There were a couple of moments when you could see that maybe he's going to get it, but they were as fleeting as finding rational FSU fans.

I still wonder if it was a grit thing with Gray, Robert Burns, Franklin and Chaney. Injuries didn't help Burns and Chaney. But I felt all these guys had the talent, but lacked the work ethic and determination. I think they were as talented if not more so than guys like Deejay, Homer and Walton, for example.

I saw Choc play some games at Carol City. He was a heck of an athlete and I was disappointed that he never reached the same level in college as some of his contemporaries he played with and against at Traz Powell, like Dalvin Cook. I guess Choc never learned the playbook or adjusted to the higher levels of play at the D1 level, so he never reached his full potential. But I must confess that Choc had some incredible raw talent; upon reflection, we had a lot of Greentree All Americans during the 2006 - 2023 era who didn’t live up to expectations. That’s probably a big reason why we struggled during those years

This is where I truly think preparation, experience, baller mentality and culture matter and rankings are less important. Toney is an average starting WR by normal measures (height, weight, 40, shuttle). Bain an average DE with "short arms".

We'll never know. But I agree with you that Choc and several of our underachievers had unrealized potential. Can't even blame it on the coaches. Because the way Mario demands 100% 24x7, I'm not sure these types of players would have demonstrated enough grit to earn the offer to begin with.

Just from reading I feel like burns peaked as a sophomore in hs. The hype train then ran him off the rails.

it is almost Greentree All American Season. Just want to examine the judgment on Chocolate Gray. No other player, IMHO, who received more hype on Greentree than him failed to reach that hype.

There were 2 highly rated RB's i never expected much out of before they hit campus. Thad Franklin and Lorenzo Lingard. Watched both their tapes and didnt feel they would be successful. But, I also thought Don Chaney was going to be a 3rd round draft pick talent.

Trayone Gray was 6-1 233 4.45 at Miami's 2019 Pro Day.

But bad change of direction - 4.60 Shuttle & 7.45 3 Cone

2015 - I refuse to believe a "Pre-ACL & moved to FB" Choc wasn't better than Walton that year

yuppp Now this one I am actually close to and remember McKenzie was an 07 recruit, Coker loved em, Saban recruited the **** out of him to get him to flip. He did like Randy when Randy got the job but quickly found himself in Randy's doghouse.

Then he was driving back to Tampa with Marve on just a regular break, fell asleep, car flipped, and he fractured his neck, Marve broke his wrist or arm. Once Jermaine got in the PT room he was separated from the team, found a snow bunny, picked up bad habits and that was it. He finished his career at memphis, worked a few random jobs, last i heard he was WR coach at Booker.

Marve was a true headcase, dude was punching out windows in the grove on random Tuesdays lol the injury def did not help, (also had a few ACL tears as well) but his problems were more mental.
