As soon as we fired Coker we promoted his DC to the head coaching job. Honestly that's the only time I've ever heard of a team firing the head coach and promoting an assistant from his staff to replace him. At least to be the permanent HC and not interim HC.

And we all know how Shannon's tenure as head coach turned out.

If Richt had not been on the coaching market I assume our head coach right now would be either Chudzinski or Cristobal. Coker assistants, just like Shannon. Chud was Coker's OC for 3 years.

Chud was living off of Butch's recruits just like the rest of the Coker staff was. Chud was not that good.

And get this. Chud wasn't even that well liked despite having Butch's recruits. Remember when he and Coker couldn't figure out how to work against Tressel and Dantonio's endless stunts for 4 quarters? Remember when we got a punt return to OSU's 20 or 25 yard line with around 90 seconds left down 17-14, and rather than try for a regulation win Coker and Chudzinski spent the next 3 plays moving the ball to the center of the field so we could kick a game tying FG? Remember the decision to put Berlin under center in 03? Remember when the only TD we scored against 8-4 BC in 2001 was scored by Shannon's defense?

Cristobal was Coker's OL coach in 2006. He improved the OL from 2005. But since he followed Art Kehoe, the worst OL coach in the history of earth, it was impossible for Cristobal not to improve the OL. Improving Art Kehoe's OL is about as impressive as improving an 0-12 team to 3-9.

Cristobal went 27-47 as a Sun Belt coach. Chudzinski got Cam Cameroned out of a HC job after 1 year since he was so awful.

The bottom line is this. How is it that you fire a guy as head coach in 2006, and nearly name his assistants as 2 of his 3 successors? If Richt hadn't been available that's exactly what would have happened.

David Shaw, Mark Helfrich, and Clay Helton are all recent in house hires.

The former 2 were assistants under successful coaches. Helton was supposed to be the interim coach but somehow ended up as permanent HC.

They were not assistants under coaches those programs fired. Well except for Helton, but Sarkisian wasn't fired for on field performance. See the difference?

Helton still counts. The other two's predecessors weren't fired, so they don't count.

I'm not sure if it really counts if the predecessor gets fired for being a drunk and not for his coaching skills.

Anyway, everybody knows Helton was a laughably bad hire so who cares.

Where do you get that Chud or Wario Crystalball would be our head coach right now if not for Richt??? They didn't even give Wario an interview.

The Buccaneers and New York Giants just promoted there OCs to head coach. How long you been following sports if youve never seen that stuff happen??

I'm comfortable deeming Bobby Bowden as someone that was fired and replaced by an assistant.

Kehoe wasnt very good past few years but thats cause the game passed him by. To say hes the worst OL coach in the history of Earth is an insanely asinine comment

Bobby was retiring, jimbo was head coach in waiting. Not the same.

Yeahhhh, that was a smooth "retirement" where everyone was on the same page regarding a departure date/season. Please. Being forced out is closer to be fired than retiring.

I was wondering the same thing. I support the premise that it was insane to promote a coach from Coker's staff after he was fired but by all accounts Cristobal and Chud were not even in the running this time around. From everything we've read, it sounds like Schiano was their next choice if Richt hadn't been available. Thank God Richt was available.

He was a bad OL coach under Butch, Coker, and Golden. He probably was a worse than ever OL coach under Golden but that's because Golden was the worst head coach of the 3.

I'll admit that I probably exaggerate how bad Kehoe was. But that's because I got so tired of some people acting like he was a UM icon who Richt needed to retain.

Don't remember many arguing this. Don't remember any at all.

Ah really? What planet were you on?

Plenty of people were arguing that.
