some of the main ex players in the media and committee that are being consulted for the coaching vacancy are the same dudes that forced Larry Coker in and started the demise...Someone needs to break the cycle and make a big out of the box move here.

Im thinking a stud NFL assistant that no-one knows and will **** everyone off and not Hue Jackson, a true unknown up and comer

I was just thinking the same thing. It is kind of ironic. It was the Coker hire that set off the chain of events that led us to where we are today, and Coker was hired largely because the players insisted on it. Now they are turning to those very same players for advice on who to hire next. Pure insanity.

It's a fair point, but they didn't walk into Paul Dee's office in 2005 and demand that Coker receive a 5 year extension. An extension which made him one of the highest paid coaches in the game. All while we were clearly showing signs of decay.

This is 100% the result of the massive leadership void in the Hecht.

Getting rid of Golden is one thing, but getting rid of the incompetence at the top is a whole other.

It's why I believe Butch is our only hope--he's the only guy the lemmings might succeed with.

Are you part of the POTATOE army? Just askin'.

There is a difference here. There was affection for COker by the players who were currently coached by him and the players knew they were on the cusp of a championship and didnt want to change sysems with a new coach.
These players are mostly no longer playing and are older and wiser and its good to have feedback from them. Oh by the way, they won a championship under Coker his first year so those Juniors and sophomores got what they wanted .You cant argue with that.

I was agreeing with the OP until he said not Hue Jackson. I agree that we shouldn't rule out NFL OC/DC's. However, saying it shouldn't be Hue Jackson is flat out wrong. Look at what he's doing in Cinncy right now.

Hue Jackson hasn't coached in college since Napoleon was exiled.

Too many cooks.

Seems UM is paralyzed by fear and this pathetic desire to cling to an antiquated model of what can put UM back on top. The stench of their fear is thick in the air, and the "mom and pop" inadequacy of needing to dig through dumpsters in Austin and Athens or trying to find some useless dreg who no one else wants as long as he has some UM ties smacks of weakness.

They'll put a stink on this great HC position if they keep treating it like they have. A stink that won't go away.

do you realize those same players won the 2001 championship?

Why is there such deference to the players on the 2001 team? Greatest team ever? Yes. Does that make them any more knowledgeable about who should lead the program for the next decade? No.

Alabama wandered in the wilderness for a decade because anyone who had a connection to Bear Bryant automatically became a more qualified candidate, even if they couldn't direct a team to the bathroom. Miami, to me, is making the same mistake in demanding that anyone connected to that 2001 team be instrumental in selecting the next coach/actually be the next coach.

2001 was great. Butch should get credit for building that team. It should, however, have NO IMPACT on who the next head football coach is.

Blake made a huge mistake getting more former players than Vilma and Testaverde involved.

Im hoping they dont ask who they think should get the job rather the qualities they would like to see and a list of things they think they would need to do in order to be successful.

Asking multiple players about certain candidates is a joke. Just for fun, send an email to 20 of your buddies and ask them a random question like. Im taking my wife out to eat, What restaurant would you recommend?

See how many different responses/opinions you get. You are better off just doing your own research and picking yourself.

I continue to be amazed that so many Canes fans still consider the Larry Coker hire to be a bad move by the university. Hiring Larry Coker was absolutely the right thing to do at the time. The man won a national title and for all intents and purposes, won a second consecutive national title. What else could anyone have hoped for at that time?

Where UM failed in this regard was two-fold:
1) Giving him a contract extension after the 2004 season that extremely favorable to coach Coker w/r/t the early termination buyout. Coker's market value did not command that kind of contract, but as we went on to learn about donna, she cared not about on-field results; Only about the team's PR image.

2) Not terminating Larry Coker after the 2005 season. It was evident to even the least knowledge Canes football follower that Coker was not the right man to continue to run this program going forward. But yet again, donna chose to give him another year because she felt he was a good PR steward of the program. I truly believe if the FIU brawl incident not occurred, Coker would have also been given the 2007 season as well.

The players wanted Coker not for his coaching prowess (or lack thereof) but rather to maintain the same culture they had instituted with Butch.

They didn't want some coach to come in and change the schemes and the way things were done at Hecht.

Any coach could've came in and won that title. Have you noticed that we degraded every year in both talent and performance every year under Coker? No, because you don't look at the big picture.
