The Evolution of Cantwell's Game

How/why are we using the word "evolution" to try describe a player's development who has been on a college team for 8 months and played in 2 games? Maybe it's for lack of a better word (like development), but c'mon. Dude has two games under his belt. If this post (and several others) doesn't show how our society has become one of entitled to immediate gratification, I don't know what does.
I don't think that's it. I don't want to speak for @lindend, but my impression was he will bump these threads throughout the player's time at Miami.

1. The OL group Mauigoa joined was far worse than this one. Much easier to crack the top 5.
2. Mauigoa had his moments as a Freshman where he looked......like a Freshman. He didn't always look like the version we saw a season ago.
I dont agree.. That 2023 oline is better and had more returning starters than this line, maybe that changes at end of season but the 2023 line is better, Lee probably had more starts returning than all these guys combined.

I'm referring to the overall depth/talent. We had real solid starters like Rivers, Lee, Cohen and Cooper was coming off a solid Freshman season - but after that, there was a huge drop-off.

I think a better comparison for Cantwell is Markell Bell.

Both have massive size, but had growing pains when they showed up.
Markel was ahead a bit due to his age and playing JUCO.
He played his first year, where he started 1/2 the year beside a veteran OG, which is very helpful for Communication.

Cantwell has better athletic traits, but remember its hard for a tall guys to learn how to bend and re anchor. Congdon is able to because of his wrestling background, hence why he may look better as an OG right now.

I think Cantwell will likley start next year at RT, and we can certainly stash him in the 2 deep while Buchanan and SJ play guard this year.
If they are just a touch better start them instead and keep coaching up Cantwell so you build up confidence and good habits and mechanics, ala Okunlola.
100%. We have to realize that both lines of scrimmage and the defensive line to a lesser extent aren’t gonna be as good as last year’s, but that’s OK, as long as they’re good enough. Indiana’s lines of scrimmages were weren’t great last year, but they had plenty of talent around them to where as long as it was good enough, you could get the job done. The talent around both of our line of scrimmages is better this year than last year, so the offensive and defensive line just have to be good enough and don’t get me wrong, I think the defensive line is gonna be nasty but more so the offensive line. SJ and Buchanan will continue to get better and Cantwell and cogdon will continue to get more comfortable as the season goes.

The evolution of overreacting…

Camp Kool Aid: Cantwell is Tony Boselli

Game 1 as a True Freshman: Cantwell did not look like the Tony Boselli you mentioned

Game 2 against a terrible FAMU: I told you he’s Tony Boselli
My conspiracy theory: Certain posters on here have to own stock in Canes Wear / certain players jersey sales. So they overhype them to get jerseys sold and make d money off it.

With Cantwell we need to remember he is learning to play a new position on the other side of the line while being a true freshman. He has never played G before and played LT all Spring. We will probably see a different player after a few games for experience. Given his athletic ability, I like his chances.

Cantwell will be fine, still learning to be consistent in his technique. He doesn’t have the greatest bend but it’s serviceable and he will improve as the season goes along.

This is what I think will happen. When you throw young guys in the fire with upside they usually rise to the occasion. It’s a long season, and guy like SJ, Buchanan, Congdon, Cantwell, Hawks, and Wilkerson are young, but have high upside. One thing about SJ, is he’s athletic af, he can have a positive impact depending on how you run your offense. As he gets older he will develop that push back y’all are wanting to see.

Thank you for the sensible post.

A lot of porsters are freaking out and forgetting that Francis had multiple penalties during his FR and Sophomore seasons. He was more advanced technique-wise than Cantwell, but he also had to be developed to become the player that he is today.

Most of these same porsters were calling Okunlola a bust after his first 2 seasons. Some of them were saying that he should be shipped out.

Us sensible posters reminded them (as I am again doing now), that OL and DL are grown man positions. Give Jackson time to be developed and get acclimated to the speed of the game and you’re gonna see a monster LT in a couple of years.

The young man has played some snaps in a grand total of 2 games. We have some of the worst fans in CFB when it comes to their hot takes.

This is it. Way too much recency bias after 2 games. He’s a freshman getting a ton of snaps in a new role. Improvement from Game 1 to Game 2 is all I need to see right now. Let the kid develop.
100% and by the posters on here you would think he showed no improvement, he did improve from Stanford and he’s gonna continue to improve. Listen, I was at fault for thinking he’d come in just like Francis Did it and lockdown a spot right away but that’s not the case and he’s gonna need a little more development and that’s OK. Towards the end of the season, he’s gonna be a total stud out there and that’s when we’re gonna need it the most.

Are yall rewatching the games multiple times or do you all just have the ability to watch a game live and see enough of all the players on the field to have a strong opinion about each and every one of them?
I wanted to be a scout like the rest of you so I went back and rewatched the tape. I focused on Joel Ervin’s 3 snaps. After my evaluation I have him graded as a future day 2 pick.

Not worried. We live in an instant gratification society. Nobody wants anyone to learn or develop. Luckily our coaches do. People were doing the same thing with Samson.

Oline is one of the more complicated things to learn when it comes to fine details that make a huge difference. Mario and Mirabal will get him right. Look up in 2 years and he’ll be a projected first rounder.
Expecting O/DLinemen to contribute as Freshmen / Rookies is a fool's errand. It's a grown man's game in the trenches where every technical error and every physical flaw is ruthlessly punished.

People were ready to run Pankcake off too cause he wasn’t playing while making all that money.

Now he’s being mentioned as one of the first tackles taken in the draft

Direct link to Tengwall's Cantwell breakdown. He's playing too high (continued against FAMU).

Tengwall did a great breakdown. Pointed out multiple times vs Stanford where SJ completely missed his assignment, where it wouldn't have mattered if he was 330 lbs. And of course pointed out that Cantwell was getting stood up way too easily. These are things that can be fixed and Mario and Mirabal are the right guys to do it. Question is how long it takes to fix.
