The Evolution of Cantwell's Game

You have to understand the differences between him and Sisi.

Sisi went to IMG, which is daily elite coaching, and going up in practice every single day against 5-star type players. Then, when you play games, you play against the best teams in Florida, and America. He's getting elite schooling, daily, and then playing in practice and games against the best players in the entire country. Literally. He was there for his Junior and Senior seasons.

Cantwell is from Nixa, Missouri, which I believe is waiting for it's first stop light, and who was coaching him? The school lunchlady? Give him time, Sisi was ready made. He was polished. This kid needs to be coached and needs to have iron sharpen iron in practice. I'm personally guilty of this myself, I assumed he'd come in and start and be great, but when I really thought about it and laid it out in my mind how I did above, I understood that's probably not reality. This kid's path versus Sisi's path couldn't have been more different.

Same thing I said about Samson years ago when people were ****ting on him consistently like him and Sisi were identical situations, even worse its like no one wanted to acknowledge his injury set back. Oline is already a development position and I dont want true freshman starting anyway.. We should of hit the portal harder for this bridge year, we seem atleast one competent oline short for a true championship run.. We gonna have to thug it out

Y'all have to understand, though.

People are stupid.

"Until (Stanford) he only played Highschool comp"?

I don't want to jump on Cantwell as clearly he will improve and everyone ain't a day 1 starter in the trenches...but this has to be the most ridiculous statement as if Cantwell didn't practice against our defensive line (who is much better than Stanford's) since January...Iron sharpens Iron and he saw lesser talent against Stanford.

People don’t understand how difficult it is to do what Sisi did. They’re like, “Cantwell is a 5 star also so he’ll just come in as a true freshman, completely dominate, and be named a Freshman All-American just like he did.” Through 2 games some people are already willing to call Cantwell a “bust” or “overrated.” Huh??? How bout we let him at least get one full season under his belt before we start ripping the kid.
This despite Sisi coming in with another 5 star OT Samson Okunlola, who is just now starting... sigh

I think a better comparison for Cantwell is Markell Bell.

Both have massive size, but had growing pains when they showed up.
Markel was ahead a bit due to his age and playing JUCO.
He played his first year, where he started 1/2 the year beside a veteran OG, which is very helpful for Communication.

Cantwell has better athletic traits, but remember its hard for a tall guys to learn how to bend and re anchor. Congdon is able to because of his wrestling background, hence why he may look better as an OG right now.

I think Cantwell will likley start next year at RT, and we can certainly stash him in the 2 deep while Buchanan and SJ play guard this year.
If they are just a touch better start them instead and keep coaching up Cantwell so you build up confidence and good habits and mechanics, ala Okunlola.

Edit: I'll add that, let's look how good that offense was Mario first two years.
Cantwell walked into a much higher floor with high expectations. Did we expect Cantwell to be at least Amez Cooper his third year? Little unrealistic.

The staff couldn't disagree with you more. That's the only thing that matters

Thumbs Ok GIF

His trajjectory should be similar to Samson's. Samson wnet to e prvate prep school with only 550 students and played mostly similar schools. Thayer is better known for hocky players.

I still think he's a RT. Have thought so even through his LT stint during spring. Hope I'm off and he grows into a stud LT later. But, anyone extrapolating too much about position and play from his first two college games is playing with fire. Kid has no idea what he's doing yet, and he's playing freakin' Guard for the first time in a system that emphasizes guards anchoring and keeping their heads on swivel to keep moving vertically. Lot of stuff going on.

Are yall rewatching the games multiple times or do you all just have the ability to watch a game live and see enough of all the players on the field to have a strong opinion about each and every one of them?
Haha right? I focus mostly on guy with the ball (Mensah or a RB). Every once in a while I’ll look at the OL for one play. Even if Cantwell happened to have one bad play, what about the other 30-40 snaps?

Samson didn't get this many snaps as a Freshman. A lot of this is recency bias. People are comparing Cantwell to what they saw with Francis in his Junior year, not his '23 season. People like to use Cantwell's PFF grades against him, but fail to mention Mauigoa's 68.1 overall PFF grade his freshman year

I get it was just Florida A&M, but Cantwell improved from game 1 to 2. That's all you can ask for
