▪ Because of D’Eriq King’s size (5-9), scouts want to see exceptional accuracy from UM’s quarterback. Without that, he will remain a fringe NFL prospect, according to two scouts. And that’s why it would be helpful if King improves his deep passing game. He made a terrific throw to Dee Wiggins for a touchdown Saturday, but for the season, he’s just 5 for 20 on passes thrown at least 20 yards in the air, with two touchdowns.

But here’s the good news, which NFL people should not overlook: No quarterback in FBS has thrown as many passes (94) without an interception … Overall, King is 22nd in the country in passing efficiency . His 66.7 percent completion percentage (63 for 94) is 20th in the country and better than his 63.5 in his great year for Houston in 2018 and enormously better than his 52.7 in four games last season.

And there’s this: No quarterback in the country has been better at breaking tackles. He’s averaging 5.7 yards after contact on rushing attempts, which is third best in the country for any quarterback or running back, per Pro Football Focus.

▪ The offensive line still has not allowed a sack all season, and coach Manny Diaz suggested on WQAM that the Canes might use two left tackles moving forward: Zion Nelson (who played admirably Saturday) and John Campbell (the starter the first two games). Nelson was PFF’s highest-rated UM offensive lineman against FSU, followed by center Corey Gaynor and right tackle Jarrid Williams.

King was pressured on only four of 43 dropbacks, per PFF. Overall, PFF gave UM’s highest offensive grades to King, running backs Robert Burns and Don Chaney Jr. and receiver Michael Redding IV. Redding, who caught a touchdown Saturday, has emerged as the furthest along of the four freshmen receivers. Diaz loved how Redding made a “highly contested catch in man coverage” on Saturday. Redding, from IMG Academy in Bradeton, played 23 snaps Saturday, compared with 13 for freshman Keyshawn Smith, three for Xavier Restrepo and one for Daz Worsham.

▪ UM is doing a good job splitting running back carries and getting maximum production. The Hurricanes are fifth in the country in rushing yards with 697 and sixth in per-carry average at 5.86. Against FSU, Cam’Ron Harris played 43 snaps, Chaney 19, Jaylon Knighton 18 and Robert Burns 9. And the freshmen backs are emerging as dangerous receiving threats, combining for four catches (on four targets) for 50 yards on Saturday.

▪ Defensively on Saturday, PFF gave UM’s top five grades to striker Gilbert Frierson, defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte, cornerback Al Blades Jr. and defensive linemen Jason Blissett and Nesta Silvera. UM coaches told ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit what we have been reporting: They believe Harrison-Hunte is going to be an elite player here. Harrison-Hunte, who had a sack Saturday, played 19 snaps, compared with 32 for Jon Ford and 23 for Silvera. He’s going to keep the pressure on Ford all season.

▪ Some freshmen got their first substantial action on Saturday, with cornerback Isaiah Dunson getting 20 offensive snaps, tight end Dominic Mammarelli playing 19 snaps, linebacker Corey Flagg 17 snaps, cornerback Marcus Clarke and defensive lineman Elijah Roberts 13 apiece, safety Keshawn Washington 11, guard Jalen Rivers 10, defensive end Chantz Williams 12, defensive end Quentin Williams 9 and linebacker Tirek Austin-Cave seven and safety Jalen Harrell six. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke took the final snap of the game. Safety Brian Balom played 21 snaps. And with Gurvan Hall suspended for the first half of the Clemson game after his disqualification for targeting, Balom will be needed to give Bubba Bolden and Amari Carter a breather. Per PFF, Larry Hodges — who missed the previous week’s game — played seven snaps, but Jeremiah Payton — in his first game back — didn’t play any on offense.

▪ UM already has 22 commitments and room for about 25 in the 2021 recruiting class, but the Canes remain in play for more than a dozen targets, including four-star quarterback Jake Garcia, who remains committed to Southern California despite lobbying from multiple 2021 commitments in UM’s class. Garcia relocated to Valdosta, Georgia, to play his senior season. Among the players UM is pursuing: Havana, Florida-based teammates and three-star defensive ends Joshua Farmer (told Canesport that UM is running second behind FSU) and Darrell Jackson (a soft Tennessee commit). But FSU has not made an offer to Jackson and they want to go to school together.

▪ Miami Central three-star running back Amari Daniels told 247 Sports: “My top four has been alive — Georgia, Penn State, Texas A&M and especially UM. They’re all alive.”

▪ Quick stuff: UM blitzed less than 20 percent of the time against FSU, which makes their six sacks even more impressive… ABC picked up UM’s Oct. 10 game at Clemson at 7:30 p.m…. Guard Cleveland Reed, who was permitted to return to the team this year after entering the portal last year, got 10 snaps on Saturday and stands as the No. 4 guard. Linebacker Avery Huff got only six snaps on defense Saturday; he’s very talented but raw.

The BOT needs to open up the checkbook to the point that Rhett Lashlee becomes an offensive Venables: completely untouchable by other programs and an obvious heir apparent to the HC job.

Miami’s problem has always been that it’s a “selling club”. You come here to burnish your credentials for Bama or the NFL. This has never been a destination job. That needs to change.

While I agree with opening the checkbook for Lashlee to make it awfully difficult for him to be enticed to leave for a G5 job or low rung P5 HC gig, I doubt Rhett is looking to hang around long enough to get the job especially with Manny being so young as well. The best hope we have is if Lashlee decides that $2.5mil is t enough to hang around for a bit that Diaz can find either another stud HC or hope that either Likens or Justice can become the heir apparent at OC.
