The D should improve and here's why

The development of the sophomore class is why our defense will show a lot of improvement next year.

Trajan Bandy, Amari Carter, Derrick Smith, De'andre Wilder, Bradley Jennings jr., Waynmon Steed, Jonathan Garvin, Jon Ford all will improve and add quality depth.

We won't become a better defense till we coach our players better. I can name like 20 things we don't do well defensively. (which is why I am consistently on our defenses case. (No order)

1. Recruiting on the defensive side as been underwhelming. Our offense has not been as good yet I see 4 star recruits everywhere on offense.
2. We're poorly coached from a position group stand point. Kool is a great teacher of pass rushing but not so great in terms of run defending.
3. Our DL seemed to NEVER, EVER seem to set the edge on run plays ESPECIALLY against the read option. I can think about 10 plays where the DE would of had the play stopped but instead charges into the backfield instead of reading the mesh completely losing outside containment. (Same with the LBs)
4. We lacked discipline and eye placement for most of the season on all 3 levels.
5. DT did not maintain their rush lanes. Gave QBs and RBs huge gaps to run through. They also easily took themselves out of the play.
6. To many stunts on the DL. At time stunts took D-linemen out of the play.
7. Poor play calling It like the offense knew if it was zone, blitz, man, zone blitz 90% of the time so they always had an answer ESPECIALLY on 3rd down.
8. LB has to be the worse coached group on the team. This is why I'm torn ST coach and LB coach. Manny CAN NOT COACH LBs. This is the side effect of hiring someone who has never played the position. We miss on to many small things.
9. 1st QTR defense/game planning. Horrible 1st down team. Part of the reason we are *** on 3rd down is because we give up about 4-5 yards on 1st down seeming all the time.
10. A complex scheme that hasn't produce a dominant defense. Our defense needs to be simplfied It takes until mid way before we start playing more talented freshman. We need to simplify the defense. When Manny first got here his full defense wasn't install as he had only been with the players for a couple months so of course he had to simplify the defense. Now that his entire defense is installed he tries to be to cute.
11. LB/CB doesn't jam, reroute, or get very phyiscal TE/Slot/WRs. We need to get more physical with TE/WR who try to come across the middle/seams.
12. In zone coverage our LBs doesn't look at Slot/WRs/TE to get the proper depth on their drops. Teams started to realize this at the end of the season. If you haven't notice the middle of the field is open 24/7.
13. LB loses their run gaps. 11-13 are the scariest ones because we came RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE playing this way to the point Bethune Cookman was able to mass almost 400 total yards. It makes you wonder WTF was Manny doing with the LBs all off-season for them to have come out in game 1 with no one having the ability to properly play LB. It as if Manny is learning how to coach LBs on the fly and correcting problems as we go. Problems that honestly should of been dealt with day 1 of spring.
14. Our DBs don't look for the ball. Do our coaches or players yell "BALL!" when the ball is in the air so CBs turn their heads around? Clearly not.
15. We align our safeties to far. It basically takes them out of run support. Wonder why we don't have missiles at Safety? because they have to run 25 yards just to get to the LOS the way we line them up. (It 100% okay to line them up that far in zone 1 though). We need to line our players closer to the LOS. Tighten up the room on field. We don't suffocate teams like we should in coverage. We give them to much free roam. We need to line our players closer to the LOS AND PUT our hands on them. If a WR or TE is able to get down field after being harassed most of his route then more power to them. We give up big plays anyways.
16. Our tackling system is ***. Hawk tackling is ***. RBs seem to drag our players for an extra 1 or 2 yards the way we tackled.
17. Our players take horrible angles. Does our coach teach angles? Some of our players try to run at the ball carrier instead of cutting them off minimizing the damage.
18. Not to mention, packages, it as if didn't have a nickel or dime package. It also felt like we didn't know if the other team was going to come out in a 4 WR formation set while we came out with 3 LBs. It like we didn't know other teams tendencies. The play calling defensive/personnel felt like me or you playing Madden where you don't have to care about detail.
19. Our run defense wasn't stout. It wasn't a hassle trying to run the ball against us.
20. We let average QB carve us up. Benkurt, Hornibrooke, Kelly, and a true freshman QB from Pitt all took our lunch. All of em. They all looked like Aaron Rodgers. Everything about those QB are average to below average but when they play us? It like we were the Dolphins and those QBs were Tyrod Taylor. (Only dolphins fans know this pain)

Until we fix all those problems we won't be better defensively.
