The D is still ******* horrible

Special teams in another big concern of mine. Why cant we ever go after punts like we use in the past?

most of yall dumb as ****, arkansas state run an uptempo offense and that sh*t is hard as **** to defend. out of 89 plays they only got 334 yards which is 3.75 per play. Yall complaining just because you want to stfu.

Couldn't have said it any better

The d is not awful. They have played well against 3 really different offenses. Now we need to see the defense performs against a more stout team.

LULZ at 3 "really different" offenses. Two HS teams and a team that UVA just ragdolled.

That's odd. I thought you were propping that high school offense up as an offense good enough to get Arkansas State the win. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Anyways, I don't think we are great on D. I think that we are talented, but that scheme makes me nuts. As lucane said, we concede way to much by alignment. Someone is going to abuse the millionaire when we split him out. It is only a matter of time.

If thats what you believe will happen then it probably will. have a little bit of faith in your team.

i not sure the D play was poor. i think, against this style of offensive, they played contain at the line rather than rush upfield on most plays. only on obvious passing plays, i think, was their goal to get up into the pocket. maybe someone with more technical understanding of the game an confirm. if this is the case, that their goal was to stop the big play and to contain at the line, then they did a good job.

They won by 2 points....

And they manhandled that UL offense. Hence, they ragdolled them. Meanwhile, that same team blew us out and pretty much toyed with us in the 2nd half, and our fans were simply hoping to avoid being blown out as a sign of progress.
This time Louisville had the QB making his first ever road start... Only listened to UVA on satellite today on the way across the Alley, but UVA's defense was pretty exceptional against UCLA as well. We're generally putting too much stock in the "Virginia only won 2 games last year!" narrative.

You don't have to move out your OLB/DE as far out as the **** hash. You're allowing the offensive formation to dictate enormous gaps in your coverage.

That's what annoyed me. Our splits were often too wide and too uniform. Not as absurd as the Wake Forest game last season but still overly reactive and not aggressive enough.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm not sure how it looked on TV but from the stadium the defense avoided many plays that could/should have broken wide open. They had some screen passes set up well but butchered either the throw or in one case the cut.

The first possession was hilarious because we couldn't stop a play yet Arkansas State ended up with negative yardage due to the massive loss on the bad snap.

I don't understand why nobody has tried the underneath crossing routes that burned us so routinely last year, particularly against Virginia Tech.

There was nothing wrong with the alignment. Jamal Carter taking 3 false steps and thinking the QB had the ball was the problem. There was lane for him to fill. He makes the tackle and its 4th down.

We definitely have some fundamental issues with alignment. When we pass rush Trent Harris essentially from the slot, that is not likely to be effective against teams with crisper passing games.

I am happy about other aspects, though.

Like what Lu? Our passive D on 3rd and long drives me crazy. We basically hope the other team will make mistakes.

this guy gets it pretty much when a team can catch the balls that hit them in the hands we will pull this same thread back ujp

UL O didn't beat us, our O beat us. The D played good. Can't argue on one thread it was the O that caused us that game and then go blame the D.

We were a lot more aggressive on 3rd downs last season with the "pass rushing group" featuring McCord and AQM. That unit was screened and drawed(?) to death all season. We're doing a much better job of getting off the field on 3rd downs SO FAR this season. D'Onofrio doing a better job of picking his spots to attack.

The difference in the UVA game yesterday was thier passion and intensity on defense. It was phenomenal. And on offense UVA qb was awesome. Thier Oline gave him plenty of time..Louisville looked basic then a stud team we made then look like. I have no idea how the coastal will end up.

They just beat the team we lost to pretty bad, I would say this is a understatement .
