If you are a true Cane, during Florida Week the two most important words in sequence are The Comeback. ‘Nough said. September 6, 2003.
Miami starts the game with an electric 99 yard Devin Hester touchdown return on the kickoff that sets the Orange Bowl on fire. it is sheer chaos in the West End Zone. @LuCane and company are euphoric. Miami follows the electric TD with a FG and we are up 10-3. We seem ready to roll and overconfident. There is joy and early celebration on the sideline and in the West End Zone but the celebration and the team are about to fall off of a cliff.
Florida scores THIRTY ******* POINTS IN A ROW including one touchdown on a Brock Berlin fumble that is scooped and scored by Florida. Berlin was almost booed out of the stadium. He was seeking shelter. Water bottles are flying. Miami is on life support. Game seems over. We appear fatally wounded. The sideline is in disarray. Coker is pacing with his mouth open, taking his hat off and rubbing his bald head. He's yelling at Chuzinski and Randi Shannon on the headset. Players are pointing fingers. Sean Taylor is livid. Miami was laying an egg (one of many to come).
Miami is losing 33-10 with six minutes left in the third quarter. There is no way Miami can win. However, as @Empirical Cane can attest to, in the trenches of warfare, hope is the very last ideal to perish. It’s time for Brock Berlin Magic. @LuCane et al. in the WEZ implore Santeria Gods from Babalú Lukumí Ayé (a real church in Hialeah that won a Supreme Court freedom of religion case 10 years earlier)(cf. Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye, Inc. v. Hialeah, 508 US 520 (1993)). One play at a time. One drive at a time. One defensive stop at a time. One three and out at a time.
Following a Florida three and out, Miami drives and Berlin hits Kevin Beard (yes today's WR coach) for a TD. A successful two point conversion and it's 33-18. Florida’s balls started getting tight but they are confident, except they punt again after another three and out. Berlin throws a sixty yard completion to Beard followed by a Frank Gore rushing touchdown and it’s 33-25. Florida in full panic/period form. The momentum has changed for good. Miami's and Berlin's confidence has returned.
Florida punts again after another three and out and Miami drives and scores on a Berlin to Ryan Moore pass. 33-32. Florida is seeking safe spaces and trauma counselors and maxipads. Florida punts again and Miami starts on their own 5 or 10 with five minutes left and Miami down one point. Long methodical drive with Chudzinski earning his pay. Gore runs it in after a 10 plus play drive and Miami goes up 38-33. Two point play fails.
Florida gets the ball back and we pick off a pass, we take a knee and it's game over. A historic comeback on a Saturday night at the Orange Bowl in front of the entire country. berlin runs across the field exhibiting the chocking sign to his former team. it was a moment that will last in Cane folklore for millennia. 79,932 fans witness the improbable, The Comeback.
Berlin Beard Gore on offense and Sean Taylor DJ Williams Vilma on defense were all heroes that night.
Are you going to tell me this game doesn't mean something personal to Kevin Beard?
