Ok, coaches. Whaddaya think?

We lose the flip. Bama defers and we start on O.

We win the flip. Please Manny. Choose the ball and start us on O.

In either scenario, we need the ball in King’s hands ready to run a hurry up offense. TD? Fabulous. FG? Great. Couple of first downs and a Hedley punt inside the 20? Ok.

What we don’t want is Bama to get the ball first and score on us. Would kill the morale of our D and discourage the O.

Bottom line: take the ball after the flip of the coin!

Did this really need a thread to be started about it?

If Miami's defensive morale is "rattled" after one early touchdown and the offense is "discouraged", it's going to be a long afternoon in Atlanta.

By your rationale, the Canes should just forfeit if starting with the ball and going three-and-out.

Posts like this underscore why players are players and fans are at home on the couch.

No one on that field is going to be "rattled" or "discouraged" one drive into the game—and everyone on both sides of the ball taking the field on Saturday vehemently believes they are going to win the game.

So many Pros and cons to this , I prefer to defer make them PUNT on the 20 plays BAMA will practice on constantly for months to be perfect.

Circle up the D and tell them “ let’s get bloody “ shut them down make them walk off the field knowing there in a fight their first series.

I think the same can be said for us taking the ball and then going 3 and out. That would "kill the morale of our O and discourage the D"

It goes both ways. All we can hope for is whichever way it goes we do good early and not shoot ourselves in the foot.

that’s the norm but not always intelligent. What’s your rationale for the Bama game?
The only time I could see winning the toss and not deferring to the second half is if you have a awful defense and you think the other team will score on the opening drive. In that case you can give yourself a chance to score first otherwise it is always best to defer. You could end up getting the ball to start both the first half and the second and you get to pick the direction in which you are going in the fourth quarter. There are some exception to the rule but in the vast majority of the cases the smartest play is to defer.

As far as 'Bama goes, if we win the toss we should defer. There isn't any reason for either team to do anything different. It's game one and neither coach really knows how good either team is and there isn't enough info to go on about the teams to emphatically say we need to the ball to start the game. Just my opinion on it.
